2. General presentation of the study programme

The Programme in Engineering and Building and Architecture Techniques wants to train engineer graduate students able of working in different ways and strongly characterized in construction industry.

 The construction industry today, in design and innovative construction careers, represents a difficult challenge: buildings with low energy needs that meet high levels of comfort; buildings with low environmental impact, but high technological content and service system (smart and responsive building, smart environment); low cost buildings if compared to their life cycle; resilient and safe buildings.

 To deal with this challenge, engineers with a strong scientific background are required, experts with technical knowledge and affinity to the problems affecting the buildings and the so-called "built environment" in general. These are young dynamic engineers, able to follow and, even more, to guide transformations in construction industry.

 The programme has the ambition to train engineers able to manage the complexity that characterizes the building structures and their related processes of design, construction, operation, maintenance and further transformation or disposal at the end of their life cycle.

 ITEA Programme is preparatory to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes, constantly provided by the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering: Building System Engineering (in Italian language), Building and Architectural Engineering and Management of Built Environment (in English language).

 The first and second year are focused on basic engineering subjects and engineering construction. The third year of the study programme is enhanced by courses in construction engineering, building science and of technical application type. This course catalogue is designed to guide the student to choose the best Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) career and/or strengthen the first skills of the construction engineer for a fast inclusion into the working world as a technician of building production in support of construction and management of buildings.

 The Construction Engineer of first level, with a wide basic preparation, deals primarily with the inclusion of engineering disciplines in the architectural design, in relation to the performance, technology and technical (energy and environment, construction, structural, plant design, security), operational and construction aspects that want to guarantee and control the project quality. The third year courses allow to guide and/or train a Technician of Building Production, or a position that is qualified with particular reference to detection, management of technical-administrative and production processes (organization and management of construction site, estimates and technical and economic assessment, safety) and built management.


3. Learning objectives

In general, graduate students of the study programmes of this class must:

  • know adequately the analytical aspects of the subject areas of the study programme followed;
  • know adequately methodological and operational aspects of this subject area aspects related to the study programme chosen and be able to use them appropriately with reference to technical and application tools;
  • be able to find and solve problems related to building structures, and built environment in general, through the use of appropriate and innovative tools and techniques;
  • use the knowledge, both theoretical and applied, in different fields in which construction activity takes place, ensuring, on the professional level, a real response flexibility to the needs of the job market;
  • be able to communicate effectively their works, in written and oral form, in at least one European language, other than Italian.

Specifically, ITEA graduate students must:

  • know and understand the typological, functional, structural and technological characteristics of a building structure in its materials and building components, in relation to the physical environment, socio-economic and productive context;
  • know and understand a building structures, in relation to their origins and subsequent historical transformations and built environment context, and recognize it through the analysis of the characteristics of materials that compose them, the phases and historical techniques of their construction and the static conditions of the structures;
  • keep the control on the project;
  • analyse the technical, economic and organizational aspects related to industrial production of components for construction industry, with particular attention to recognise and test product and process innovations;
  • know and understand the engineering aspects of safety and protection of constructions, in relation to the relevant prevention and management activities.

Graduate students of this subject area will possess the necessary skills to carry out professional activities in different fields, also through contribution to planning and design activities and implementation of organization and transformation interventions of the built environment on different scales, the safety management during prevention and emergency. They can use these skills in agencies, public and private companies, engineering and architecture firms, and more generally design, industries of the field and construction companies as well as in many ways as freelance (design, work management, specialized consultancy, etc.).

The main employment openings provided by the study programmes of this class can include:

  • the activities of analysis, technical and economic evaluation, understanding, representation and survey of buildings and environmental contexts;
  • the technological and structural design and service system activities (preliminary, final and executive) and performance modelling for identification and optimization of choices (systems and building, plant engineering and structural components) to ensure environmental quality, comfort, low environmental impact, low energy consumption and safety of building structures;
  • design activities for optimization of choices to stop degradation processes and collapse of buildings and containment of their causes;
  • management activities, like: organization and management of building construction site, the economic assessment and management of building processes or transformation of areas with mainly a nature value, the direction of technical-administrative processes and related production processes;
  • activities related to safety and protection engineering of buildings, like: big building infrastructures, management systems and services used for building in construction sites and workplaces, the places for shows and sporting events, public and private bodies in which to develop prevention and safety management activities and where to work with responsibility profiles as required by law to check the safety conditions.

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)


The qualification enables students to access Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science), Specializing Courses of first level and Specializing Master of first level.

 

Graduate students in Engineering and Building and Architecture Techniques can continue their studies in Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes related to the construction industry. The access to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes depends on fulfilment of the admission criteria to the same laurea magistrale programmes.

 

In the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering of Politecnico di Milano, in particular, the following Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes are provided: Building system engineering (ISE), Building and Architectural Engineering (BAE), Management of Built Environment (MBE).

6.1 Access requirements

Italian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)


Upper middle school diploma or similar foreign qualification.

 A good initial preparation is required, which is assessed on the basis of indispensable knowledge, through a screening test. Before lectures, there are recovery activities with compulsory attendance for students that have to fill gaps.

 For the Academic Year 2016-2017, the number of first year students for the Study Programmes in ENGINEERING AND BUILDING AND ARCHITECTURE TECHNIQUES is 200.

 A good initial preparation is required, which is assessed on the basis of indispensable knowledge, through a screening test. Before lectures, there are recovery activities with compulsory attendance for students that have to fill gaps.

6.4 Tutoring and students support

Guidance

The study programme is included in the institutional guidance event organized by the University, the Open Day for Study Programmes.

In this occasion, programme presentations are organized, held by professors of the School, in which the educational objectives, the professional results and subjects of study are explained.

Furthermore, the works done by the students of the previous years are also presented, the infrastructures, where teaching takes place, are shown, and events and initiatives that are organized in the study programme.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

To be admitted onto the Bachelor of Science, students must have a sufficient background preparation (in mathematics, the sciences and verbal comprehension). Furthermore, a satisfactory level of English is required. An entry test must be taken to evaluate the applicant's qualification. In case the test demonstrates insufficient qualification in some fields, the applicant is assigned additional specific duties to be fulfilled before taking exams for the regular courses.
As specified in the academic regulations, 180 credits are required to obtain the B.Sc. (first level) degree.


The achievement of qualification is based on the acquisition of 180 credits, as specified in the degree programme.

7.2 Mode of study

"Building Engineering and Technology for Architecture" is a full time course, it includes attendance of lectures and laboratory activities. Attendance is not compulsory, but strongly recommended, in order to allow learning through continuous interaction with professors, and technical staff.
For decision of the AUIC School, elective courses will be activated only if the minimum number of 15 students will be reached. In case one or more courses will not reach the minimum number and, thus, will not be activated students will be immediately informed.


It is a full time programme; it includes attendance of lectures, exercises and laboratory activities.

 Attendance is not compulsory, but strongly recommended, in order to allow learning through continuous interaction with professors, and technical staff.

 For decision of the School, the courses will be activated only if the minimum number of 15 students will be reached.

 The CCS will inform students in time on the effective training offer availability.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

Preliminary notice

  1. The activation in the a.y. 2014-2015 of the CdS in Engineering and Building and Architecture Techniques ITEA, which merge in one CdS the L23 programmes, involves the progressive deactivation of the CdS in Construction Engineering and Architecture of Building Production until the end of the present cycle in the a.y. 2015-2016.
  2. For a.y. 2016-2017 is provided the activation of the CdS in Engineering and Building and Architecture Techniques ITEA only for the Building Engineering career;
  3. Therefore, in a.y. 2016-2017, the Technical career of Building Production will not provide new enrolments; furthermore, for this career, it is suspended, for the a.y. 2016-2017, the provision of the third year of the programme.

 Students, enrolled in a.y. 15-16 at the first year of TPE career, can change to the career in Building Engineering in September and without any educational debits.
Students, enrolled in a.y. 15-16 at the second year of TPE career, can change to the career in Building Engineering in September and through the agreement on a dedicated study plan.

7.5 Degree examination

The degree examination will focus on verifying the knowledge and skills acquired by the student, evaluated through submission and subsequent discussion of a graduation work.
The student has 2 types of access to the degree examination:

• presentation and discussion of a research paper (final graduation report);
• presentation and discussion of a monographic work (graduation work).

 

The Graduation exam consists of:

• short presentation, by the undergraduate to the Commission, of the personal study carried out;
• short interrogation by the Commission on subjects of the CdS.

11. International context

Laurea Programmes in the field of building engineering are available in many educational programmes of European and non-European universities that have an educational system similar to Italian system (3+2).

In some Countries, the Degree curriculum is provided within the Civil Engineering Programmes.

In other Countries, as in Spain, similar degrees are provided with a different educational system (4+1).

Due to the strong preparatory aspect of the Degree for a curriculum in Civil Engineering, it is suggested to students to carry out a period of study abroad, if possible in the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme, for a better outcome of the international experience.
