2. General presentation of the study programme

The complexity that characterizes the realization of architecture works and the challenges that we face with respect to sustainability goals and reduction of energy consumption require a comprehensive education that allow future graduate students of the School of Architectural Engineering to compete to a national and international level.

The Programme combines, in an integrated way, the classical architect's education with that of the building engineer, with the aim of training professionals able to develop complex projects during the conception, development, construction and management phases.

The Programme, active since 1998, is accredited at European level, in accordance with Directive 2005/36 /EC, and allows you to carry out the architectural profession in all countries that recognize each other this graduation title.

 The Building Engineer-Architect is a professional able to design an architecture work as responsible for the entire construction process, from the architectural, technological, structural and environmental point of view, developing advanced skills in the use of the most innovative construction technologies, as well as skills for intervention on existing recoverable buildings or that must be restored. This is combined with the ability to face the relation between settlements and the environment, as part of landscape and environmental assessment.

 The success of the Programme in Architectural Engineering of Politecnico di Milano is evidenced by the many subscriptions from students of other Universities in Italy and in the World to workshops that are organized with the aim to integrate multicultural skills and make the future graduate students used to a dialogue with different realities. The most famous example is the annual design competition "Premio Compasso Volante - Città di Lecco” whose results were presented at the Venice Biennale, at the Milan Triennale, the European Steel Exhibition in Metz, the Milan Urban Center, the Fabbrica del Vapore, etc. In addition, the strong international focus of the Programme in Architectural Engineering is highlighted by the many study trips abroad, both in Europe (at today: Barcelona, Basel, Berlin, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Madrid, Lisbon, Bilbao, Marseille, Vienna, Monaco, Stuttgart, Lyon, New York, Mexico City, etc..) and big developing countries (such as Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Jakarta, Sydney, etc...).

 The graduate student in Architectural Engineering is able to face the project in its complexity, ensuring:

  • architectural design skills both at building scale and on urban complexity;
  • scientific and technical competence to deal with energy and environmental sustainability issues in new buildings and recovery of the existing heritage;
  • use of innovative and cutting-edge technologies;
  • monitoring and modelling of physical and technical phenomena, to reduce energy demand and use renewable sources;
  • monitoring of construction process and management of new buildings.

The Degree Programme

The educational programme, according to guidelines of the European Directive, integrates, during the five years, classical courses in the following eight subject areas:

  • Art and Architecture History (two exams in Architecture History + a laboratory, History and critics of contemporary architecture);
  • Architectural Relief Rendering (two exams of architecture drawing, CAD laboratory, Computer Graphics, Architectural Relief laboratory);
  • Mathematics and physics (Mathematical analysis 1 and 2, Geometry, Physics);
  • Economics, law and sociology science (Law and Urban Sociology, Surveying and Economy of territory);
  • Architectural design and restoration (three exams of Architecture and architectural composition + three laboratories, Designing of construction elements + laboratory, Technical Architecture + laboratory, Architectural restoration + laboratory);
  • Urban Planning (Urban planning technique + laboratory, Urban planning design + laboratory, Analysis and environmental assessment);
  • Building construction and building technologies (Material Chemistry and Technology, Environmental Technical Physics and Technical installations, Hydraulics and Hydraulic constructions, Building Ergotechnics + laboratory);
  • Design and technology of structures (Rational Mechanics, Construction science, Geotechnics, Construction technique + laboratory, Project and consolidation of structures).

The Programme, in the first year, provides scientific and preparatory disciplines together with design courses, and makes the student accustomed from the very beginning to have an integrated approach.

Many courses have hours of laboratory work with compulsory attendance, in which students, organized in work groups, develop applied activities.

In the last year of career, there will be optional courses, to provide the graduate student specialized expertise in different areas, such as technological innovation, the interventions on existing architectural heritage, the integration building-installation with high energy efficient, the management of complex projects.

In the last two years the students can choose to attend the same courses in English, in the international career of Master of Science in Building and Architectural Engineering.

The graduation work, developed in the last year of the Programme within the Final Synthesis Laboratory, concerns complex projects of architecture, with engineering insights on details, modelling and calculation


3. Learning objectives

The educational objective is to place on the job market a professional designer of high-profile architectural works, thanks to an interdisciplinary background, that is able to deal with complex design issues, keeping pace with the innovative dynamics of the sector, in order to improve building quality in its physical, technique, aesthetics, performance, procedural and economic importance.

In particular, the Programme in Architectural Engineering, which is based on solid bases of scientific, technical and design disciplines, allows to train professionals able to deal effectively with the complexity of projects of big architectural works, providing skills focused to monitoring and management of phenomena, perfectly in line with requirements of emerging environmental quality, energy control and sustainability of today. The Building Engineer-Architect is therefore able to work effectively in processes and activities of:

  • design of complex building systems for the architectural, technological, structural, environmental quality aspects, with particular attention to comfort conditions, to the life of service (service life) and to energy and environmental impact issues, recovery, re-qualification, maintenance and management of existing buildings;
  • development of building process for construction site, management and economic aspects;
  • design of innovative and experimental building components.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

Master graduates will be able to operate as individual professionals and, in general, in positions of high responsibility, both in the public and private sector (institutions, companies, architecture and engineering offices, etc.). Their main activity field will be constructions and transformation of city and territory.


Graduate students from Laurea Magistrale can carry out, in addition to work as professionals, positions of high responsibility in institutions and public and private bodies (institutional bodies, institutions and public and private companies, professional studies and design companies), operating in the fields of construction and transformation of the city and territory.

The Study Programme in Architectural Engineering trains a highly qualified designer, with qualifications recognized by the European Union, able to deal appropriately with the growing complexity of the problems related to architectural design and to the new tasks and responsibilities required by the professional world.

The graduation is a necessary condition in order to sit the State Professional Examinations that enable to work as professional, as "Senior engineer", in the Professional Engineer Registry, and as "Senior architect", in the Professional Architect Registry, with possibility of registration to both.

Thanks to investigations conducted by the University Assessment Commission and other specialized bodies, a degree in Engineering offers good career opportunities. In particular, a degree in Building Engineering - Architecture highlights full employment and very short waiting times.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

Italian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)


Upper middle school diploma or similar foreign qualification.

6.2 Requested knowledge

The Study Programme is suggested for students that express general interests in scientific and technical fields, but also in artistic and humanistic ones; who have attitudes and skills for analysis and synthesis, as well as pro-active skills, aimed to a strong interest in architecture and world of construction.

6.3 Deadlines for admission and number of places available

The Five Year Single Cycle Study Programme in Building Engineering - Architecture has a defined number of participants, according to Article 1 of the 264/99.

For a.y. 2017/2018, the available places are 120.

6.4 Tutoring and students support

The Study Programme takes part in the Guidance events organized by the University. In these occasions, Programme presentations are organized, held by professors of the School, in which the educational objectives, the professional results and subjects of study are explained, and works done by the current students are also presented. Furthermore the infrastructures, where teaching takes place, are shown, and events and initiatives that are organized during the five years of the Programme.

In addition to these activities it is always possible, during the year, ask for a visit to the Lecco Campus, in order to see how the teaching takes place and meet the student representatives to understand "in person" how the whole structure is organized.

In September, in the hall of Lecco Campus, it is available a “Guidance and Counseling Office Point” managed by students, where it is possible to have information on registration procedures, functioning of the campus, classrooms, etc.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

Graduates know in detail the history of architecture and construction, tools of representation, theoretical-scientific and methodological-operative issues of mathematics and other basic sciences.
They are able to apply this knowledge to investigate and describe accurately issues of architecture and construction, proposing solutions that can be innovative and should be interdisciplinary.
Graduates also have up-to-date knowledge about business management and professional ethics.


Graduate students know in detail architecture and building history, tools and forms of representation, the theoretical and scientific aspects as well as methodological and operational aspects of mathematics and of other basic sciences, and they are able to use this knowledge to understand and describe in detail the architecture and construction problems.
They have a depth knowledge of theoretical and scientific aspects, as well as methodological and operational ones, related to subject areas of the Study Programme of which they are enrolled and they can use this knowledge to identify, raise and solve complex problems of architecture and building engineering in an innovative way, or that require an interdisciplinary approach; Furthermore, they have developed knowledge in the field of business organization (business culture) and professional ethics.

7.2 Mode of study

This Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities.
As specified in the didactic regulations, 300 credits are required to obtain the degree.
In particular:
- 90 credits are required for basic courses (Drawing, History, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Technical Physics, etc)
- 138 credits are required for specialised courses (Architectural Design, Urban design, Restoration, Structural mechanics, Structural Analysis and design, Sociology, Estimate, etc.) with 51 credits in design laboratory and 33 credits in other activities (Chemistry, Materials, Soil Mechanics, etc).


It is a full time programme; it includes attendance of lectures, exercises and laboratory activities
The graduation is acquired with 300 credits, as specified in the educational rules.
In particular:
- 87 in core education modules (drawing history, physics, mathematical analysis, physics, environmental technology, etc.)
- 138 in specialised courses (Architectural composition, Urban Planning, Restoration, Science and Building techniques, Technical Architecture, Surveying, Sociology, etc.) of which 51 credits in design laboratories and 30 credits of complementary activities (chemistry, materials, geotechnics, etc.)

The Study Programme includes learning activities consisting of lectures and exercises, Laboratory activities, seminars, study trips and traineeship. The laboratory attendance is compulsory.

The programme in  Building Engineering/Architecture does not have tracks.

Where courses offered by other Study Programmes of the University or in any case different from those proposed will be chosen, given that the study plan must comply with the European Directive, it will be submitted for approval to the Study Programme Board.

For decision of the School, the optional courses will be activated only if the minimum number of 15 students will be reached. It will be care of CCS to inform students on real availability.

7.5 Degree examination

The educational programme of five years ends with a graduation work that is prepared mainly in the Final Synthesis Laboratory.

The graduation work has frequently design characteristics and different field of application according to the variety of disciplines that contribute to the educational programme of the graduate students, however, all defined to prepare their access to the world of designer profession.

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

The Study Programme is carried out entirely at Lecco Campus, in the new centre realized in the former Hospital area. The classrooms for teaching, design laboratories and IT equipment allow you to work properly, in line with the standards of international Universities. There are also study areas, libraries, print shop, model laboratory, as well as research laboratories.


11. International context

Laurea Programmes in the field of Architectural Engineering are available in many educational programmes of European and non-European universities that have an educational system similar to Italian system.

In many cases, Laurea Programmes in Architectural Engineering are included in educational systems of Laurea Programmes in Civil Engineering - as in Belgium and France. In other cases, such as in Denmark or United States, there are similar Programmes. In most cases, abroad, there are similar Programmes in Architecture, with a strong interest for technical and engineering aspects.


12. Internationalization

In collaboration with SPI - Sportello Programmi Internazionali (International Programme Desk) of Politecnico di Milano also the School of Architectural Engineering participates to the internationalization programmes for students.

 DOUBLE DEGREE and TIME: Students, enrolled in Study Programme of Architectural Engineering, are eligible for double degree in one of the available foreign partner universities. Basically, the students must attend a two-year period in the foreign university, passing all the exams required by bilateral agreement between the two universities. In the first year, you sit exams that are recognized as equivalent by Politecnico. In the second year, you are required to sit exams directly for the foreign university. Therefore, the whole study programme for students in double degree programme is of six years. At the end of studies, the student graduates in both degrees, the Study Programme of Architectural Engineering and the engineering study programme provided by the foreign university.  ERASMUS +: students can submit application in order to be enrolled in a foreign university to sit some exams among those of their study plan. These programmes can last one or two semesters.  ATHENS: it is a programme that allows students to attend a course of one week in one of the most famous school of engineering in Europe. There are different courses in the available universities of the programme (Paris, Monaco, Madrid, Lisbon, Leuven, Prague, Budapest, Delft, Trondeheim, Stockholm, Warsaw, Milan), divided in two sessions per year. Each course includes, in addition to theoretical lectures, also cultural activities to raise awareness about the city that organizes the course and its university system.
