2. General presentation of the study programme

Since its conception, in 1982, the management and production engineer (hereafter, simply referred to as management engineer) has been perceived as the engineer of change and innovation. In some aspects, the management engineer is similar to the classical engineer, being responsible for creatively using scientific principles and methods to design and manage systems. The management engineer works in complex contexts, where technological, economic, human, organizational and financial variables closely interact. Hence, the skills profile of the management engineer has been shaped by translating the already existing professional profile of the manager-engineer into a clearly defined and consistent university curriculum. This curriculum has been continuously updated and enriched so as to meet the requirements of both Italian and foreign private companies and institutions where management engineers are employed.

So far, more than 14,000 management engineers have graduated from Politecnico di Milano. Today they can be found everywhere. The different career paths that these engineers have followed demonstrate that the labour market appreciate this professional qualification. Management engineers work in industrial and service (e.g., telecom, transport) companies, in consulting firms, in financial institutions, in banks and insurance companies, in authorities, in public administrations and in non-profit organizations.

Our graduates cover a widereaching range of activities, such as managing technology and the means of production, designing and managing production and logistic systems, strategic planning and marketing, business organization and management, internationalization processes, corporate and market finance, company management in regulated sectors and network services, relationships with authorities, large-scale project planning and management (e.g., manufacturing plants, infrastructures, R&D), internet applications and ICT management. 

 


3. Learning objectives

The overall aim of the Bachelor of Science iManagement and Production Engineering at PolitecnicdMilano is to train individuals able to contribute to the economic and industrial development of their country by adopting a structured and analytical approach. To pursue this objective, after long interactions with the labour market, we defined four main Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) for the management engineer. Specifically, graduates in Management and Production Engineering from Politecnico di Milano must be able to:

  1. understand the key scientificand engineering principles and how they are embodied in the various technologies adopted in the corporate world;
  2. know the context variables, and the essential functions and processes of the corporate and industrial field;
  3. design solutions by applying the scientificand engineering approach (learning, reasoning and modelling relying on a solid multidisciplinary preparation) to responsibly tackle problems and opportunitiesin the corporate and industrial field;
  4. interact professionally, effectively and constructively with colleagues in the work environment.

The accomplishment of these objectives presupposes the acquisition of knowledge and methods in the fields of both Information Engineering and Industrial Engineering.

Below we detail the educational objectives qualifying the L-8 and L-9 Classes.

 

Educational objectives qualifying L-8 (Information Engineering) Class 

Graduates from the Bachelor’s programmes of the class must:

  • adequately know the methodological-operational aspects of mathematics and the other basic sciences and be able to use that knowledge so as to interpret and describe engineering problems;
  • adequately know the methodological-operational aspects of engineering sciences, both ingeneral and in depth as regards a specificarea of information engineering in which they are able to identify, formulate and solve problems through the use of updated methods, techniques and tools;
  • be able to use techniques and tools for designing components,systems and processes;
  • be able to conduct experiments and analyse and interpret their data;
  • be able to understand the impact of engineering solutions within the social and physical-environmental context;
  • know their own professional and ethical responsibilities;
  • know the corporate contexts and the business culture in its economic, managerial and organisational aspects;
  • know the contemporary contexts;
  • possess relational and decision-making skills;
  • be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in at least one European Union language, besides Italian;
  • be equipped with the basic cognitive tools for the ongoing updating of their knowledge.

 

Educational objectives qualifying L-8 (Industrial Engineering) Class 

Graduates from the Bachelor’s programmes of the class must:

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The Bachelor of Science in Management and Production Engineering lasts three years and covers 180 credits (ECTS).

The study plan has been recently revised, following a data and information collection process that began in 2016 to identify areas for improvement in the Bachelor programme. In the new study plan, which is going to be activated in the 2018/2019 academic year, the first year is strongly focused on the study and comprehension of basic scientific and engineering principles, an essential prerequisite for a subsequent in-depth study of technological, economic, financial, human and organisational variables. The skills to be acquired are in the fields of mathematics, physics, computer science and some basic engineering sciences. Duringthesecond year of the newstudy plan, which is going to be activated in the 2019/2020 academic year, besides the above subjects, students are supposed to attend some courses in the engineering and management fields, such as optimisation methods, science of automation and digital technologies, production technologies, business strategy, productive process planning.

Lastly, during the third year of the newstudy plan, which is going to be activated in the 2020/2021 academic year, students essentially attend on economic, managerial and organisational topics, such as economics, business management and organisational behaviour, and management of industrial plants. Students also have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of some engineering disciplines, depending on their individual interests and aptitudes. The Bachelor programme is then completed by some practical activities that aim at enabling students to apply in real andmulti-disciplinary contexts the models and methodologies learnt before. These practical activities will be carried out through an internship in a company or participation in a laboratory project helping students acquire skills that are crucial to enter the job market. These activities will furthermore contribute to the accomplishment of the fourth ILO described in section 3.

The students who enrolled in the Bachelor in Management and Production Engineering in September 2017 or earlier will not be allowed to switch to the new study plan, but will have to take the exams in the old study plan. In the old study plan, the first and second years are the same for all students. Conversely, the third year allows the creation of differentiated curricula based on student needs. In particular, there are an introductory programme to the Master of Science and a practical application programme for those students who are willing to immediately enter the job market.

 

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)


The Bachelor degree in Management and Production Engineering allows the access to the  “Master Degree” (Teaching Regulation 270/04) according to the limitations established by the law and according to to the rules approved by each university.The most natural continuation of the programme is the Master of Science in Management and Production Engineering, offered by the Politecnico di Milano in the Bovisa campus. 5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Management engineering graduate integrates a solid scientific and engineering background with wide knowledge of economics and management. This preparation allows one to operate in very wide scope of activities such as: professional field: planning and management of manufacturing and logistic systems, strategic planning, marketing, cost accounting, organization, finance, project management and management and planning of new Information and Communication Technologies.


The Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Production Engineering (Teaching Regulation 270/04) belongs to both the L/8 (Information Technology Engineering) and L/9 (Industrial Engineering) Classes. In any case, the qualification is unique.

According to the law, however, the Degree issued by the University will refer to only one of the two abovementioned Classes. The students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science from September 2018 will express the option for one of the two Classes.

For the tudents enrolled till September 2017, the choice of the track at the beginning of the third year determines the Class in which the student graduates. In the "Propedeutico" concentration, the 'Organization' track belongs to the L/8 (Information Technology Engineering) Class, whilst the 'Logistics and Production' track belongs to the L/9 (Industrial Engineering) Class. Instead, the students who choose the “Applicativo” concentration must express the option for one of the two Classes.

Bachelor graduates in Management and Production Engineering can, if they are interested, take the "Esame di Stato", a state-run examination for the professional qualification in Section B (Junior Engineers) of the Engineers’ professional register, only in the “Information Technology Engineering” or “Industrial Engineering” areas corresponding to their degree qualification Classification.

 

5.2 Careers options and profiles

More than 14,000 management engineers have graduated from the Politecnico di Milano since the introduction of this degree course. The many diverse career paths these engineers have followed prove that the labour market appreciates this professional qualification and employs management engineers also in activities not initially covered or considered when the Degree Programme was designed (e.g., activities in the financial industry).

The survey carried out by the Career Service of Politecnico di Milano in 2017 on the management engineers that got the Bachelor Degree title the year before, reveals that one year after obtaining their degrees, 96.6% of these graduates are employed. 67.1% of sample graduates found a job within 2 months after the graduation. Among these, 11.8% of the graduates found a job abroad. 39.8% of the graduates work in large companies having more than 500 employees, 41% in companies with 50-499 employees and the remaining 19.2% in small companies having less than 50 employees.

The degree course in Management and Production Engineering has always had strong links with businesses and the labour market.

5.3 Qualification profile

Management Engineer

Profile in a work context:

Highly qualified professional profile able to work in different business areas with particular attention to the analysis and management of processes and the resolution of industrial and organization problems

Skills of this function:

1. To understand the basic scientific and engineering principles and their meanings in the main technologies used by companies

2. To know the context variables, the functions, the processes and the key decisional areas in the business and industrial environment

3. To design solutions by applying the scientific and engineering approach (learning, reasoning and modelling based on a strong multidisciplinary preparation) to address problems and opportunities in the business and industrial fields

4. Interact in a professional, responsible, effective and constructive way with colleagues in the workplace

Job opportunities:

There are many and different job opportunities for management engineers graduated at Politecnico di Milano - with laurea triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science), or then with laurea magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) - proof that the job market welcomes this professional profile. The main sectors in which the management engineers can work are: consulting, the energy/oil&gas/utilities sector, in mechanics and automation, in electronics, IT and ICT services, and finance. Some examples of profiles held by management engineers who have obtained the First Level Laurea are: marketing analyst, demand planner, controller, junior consultant.


6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

Italian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)


For admission to the Bachelor of Science in Management and Production Engineering, an admission test, that is the same for all the Bachelor of Science Degrees in Engineering offered by Politecnico di Milano, must be taken to ascertain students’ aptitude and preparation for studies.

Students who are already enrolled on other degree programmes of the Politecnico di Milano or at other Universities and wish to move to the Management and Production Engineering Programme can request acknowledgement of any ECTS they have already earned. Requests from students of Politecnico di Milano that want to move to the Bachelor Degree in Management and Production Engineering are accepted only if the student has reached, by the 15th of August, a number of registered ECTS greater or equal to 30, including courses that are present in the student's study plan as supplementary. The Commission in charge of student transfers for the Degree Programme in Management and Production Engineering will determine which of these courses will be acknowledged as useful for attaining the degree.

6.4 Tutoring and students support

The "Tutoring" service is aimed at assisting students during their studies, especially in the first three years. This activity involves student-tutors and professor-tutors. Student-tutors provide students with information on the practical organization of studies and on the support system offered by the Politecnico. Furthermore, they help students who need to fill basic gaps (for example, students with compulsory supplementary education). Student-tutor activity is carried out through meetings during her/his appointment period or via e-mail. The service is organised as part of the Study Programme to which students should refer for all necessary information to find tutors and the services provided.

Moreover, on request, the tutoring service provides professors with PhD student-tutors to support students in laboratory activities, to provide additional support to foreign students or to organise teaching material provided by professors.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As specified in the didactic regulations, 180 credits are required to obtain the degree (first level). More specifically, at least 70 credits are required for the basic courses (mathematics, statistics, computer science), the remaining credits for distinguishing courses and other activities.

7.2 Mode of study

This Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities


Four teaching innovation initiatives have been integrated into the new study plan. The first initiative aims at developing students’ organizational and social skills, especially contributing to the fourth ILO of the degree course (i.e., interacting professionally, effectively and constructively with colleagues in the work environment). It consists in the introduction of the 5 ECTS course "Organizational behavior" in the study plan of the third year of the Bachelor of Science. The activities of this course should be designed so as to involve students in practical tests and activities with the following expected learning outcomes:

  • managing stress, time and priorities;
  • understanding team dynamics and contributing to teamwork to achieve a result;
  • managing conflicts constructively;
  • clearly communicating concepts and ideas.
  • behaving in a professional and responsible way.

The activities that could be carried out include:

  • self-assessment test of personality and attitude to group work. and conflict management;
    • assessment centers managed by companies where the group work behaviors and individual personality of the participants are observed and students are provided with individual, structured feedback on their own strengths and areas for improvement;
  • video recording of presentations;
  • mentoring sessions with Master of Science students.

The second initiative aims at exposing Bachelor students to some examples of multidisciplinarity, especially contributing in particular to the second ILO (i.e., knowing the context variables, the essential functions and processes in the corporate and industrial field). This initiative consists in the introduction in the study plan of the third year of the 10 ECTS course “Business data analytics”, which involves the departments of mathematics and management, economics and industrial engineering.

The third initiative aims at exposing students to real problems, offering them the opportunity to apply in two different ways concepts learned during the last year of the degree course:

  • Project in a company
    • Traditional individual internship (2-3 full time months in a company, with a specific goal)
    • Part-time internship (5-6 months part-time to allow students to attend lectures)
    • Group work in a company with a specific task
    • Competitions organized by companies
  • Laboratory project focused on solving real life problems.

This third initiative contributes in particular to the third and fourth ILOs (designing solutions by applying the scientific and engineering approach and interacting professionally, effectively and constructively with colleagues in the work environment).
Finally, 1 CFU of the "Mathematical analysis II" course that is offered in the first year of the study plan, will be awarded by adopting the flipped classroom approach, thus contributing to the first ILO (i.e., understandingthe essential scientificand engineering principles and their embodiment in the various technologies adopted in the corporate world).

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

In the following, we report the Programme of study in Management and Production according to the Teaching Regulation 270/04 for the 2018/2019 academic year.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in September 2018 may include in their study plan the courses of the PND plan only (see below). Despite in the 2018/2019 academic year only the first year of the new study plan will be active, for the sake of completeness, we report also the courses for the second and third years, which are going to be activated in the 2018/2019 and 2019-2020 academic years, respectively. Please, note that the names of second and third year courses might undergo marginal changes.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Sciencein September 2017 or in earlier years may include in their study plan only the teaching programmes of the old GND plan and, as regards the third year of the programme, of the old GAP, GPL and GPO plans (see below). Starting from the 2018/2019 academic year, four first year teaching programmes of the old GND plan – namely, Mathematical nalysis I and geometry, Computer science A, General physics, and Mathematical analysis II – will be unified with the courses of the same name from the new PND plan. As regards the other two first year courses of the old GND plan – namely, Probability and mathematical statistics and Principles of electric engineering, the last edition of these courses will be offered in the 2018/2019 academic year. In the following academic years, repeating students will be allowed to take the exams, but will not be able to attend course lectures any more.

7.3.1 Recommended prerequisites


7.3.2 Individual Tracks


Students should avoid autonomous tracks. Tracks proposed by the students and constructed in an autonomous way can be exceptionally accepted only in presence of strong motivations. Students with strong motivations are those

  • whose study plan has become autonomous as a result of the transfer to the degree course in Management and Production Engineering from other degree courses of Politecnico di Milano or from other universities and the recognition of the ECTS already achieved;
  • whose study plan has become "autonomous" as a consequence of changes made to the Academic Regulations of the Study Program;
  • who propose an autonomous study plan  to participate in international exchange programmes,
  • enrolled in the third year of the course who intend to include in their study plan some M.Sc. courses to acquire the attendance or the ECTS (see the following point of the teaching regulations).

7.3.3 Examinations passed before enrolling in the Master of Science programme (M.Sc.)


During the Bachelor of Science degree, students can, in the interests of future admission to a Master of Science programme:

  • A1) earn ECTS credits by passing extra M.Sc. examinations, included in their  study tracks; these ECTS that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 credits needed to be awarded an M.Sc.
  • A2) acquire attendance status in M.Sc. courses.  As in A1) but without the request of passing the examination that, as a result of acquiring attendance status, can be taken in advance.
  • A3) Earn ECTS credits for track integrations established by an ad hoc Bachelor of Science admissions Commission; these ECTS credits are “in addition” to the 120 needed to be awarded the Bachelor of Science.

 

In the period between awarding of the Bachelor of Science degree and enrolment on the M.Sc., in the interests of the latter, it is possible to:

  • B1) earn ECTS credits by successfully passing M.Sc. Examinations, by enrolling on M.Sc. modules as individual modules. These are considered “advance” ECTS credits that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 credits needed to be awarded an M.Sc.
  • B2) acquire attendance status in M.Sc. modules as in  B1) but without passing the examination.
  • B3) Earn ECTS credits for track integrations established by an ad hoc Bachelor of Science admissions Commission; these ECTS credits are “in addition” to the 120 needed to be awarded the Bachelor of Science.

 

There are the  following limitations:

  1. the total number of ECTS credits  (by passing examinations and/or by acquiring attendance status) that can be acknowledged as part of the 120 ECTS credits needed to be awarded the M.Sc. (A1+A2+B1+B2) cannot exceed  30. Thus any additional ECTS credits earned exceeding 30 will not be taken into account.
  2. the number of ECTS credits acquired by single modules cannot exceed 80 ECTS, including also  track integrations (A3 and B3).

7.5 Degree examination

The general procedures on the graduation exam are included in the document “Final Graduation Exam Regulations” approved by the School Board in the meeting of  09.10.2013 (http://www.ingindinf.polimi.it/fileadmin/files/pdf_scuola/regolamenti_lauree/RegolamentoProvaFinale.pdf).

According to both this document and the specific needs of the programme, the Programme Board in Management and Production Engineering has introduced the following specifications.

The graduation exam is worth 3 ECTS credits. The exam score is not calculated as part of the average score but it is used to increase the overall Bachelor of Science degree score. The increase range is between -1/110 and 7/110. In exceptional cases, the Degree commission could attribute to a student an additional point so as to bring the maximum increase to 8/110.

Currently, the graduation exam differs between the two concentrations. For the students in the “Propedeutico” concentration, the graduation exam consists in the participation in a 'business game', a competition based on simulating a company environment, which is held every year in the second term. A student is admitted to the business game if s/he has in its Track the final graduation exam (3 ECTS) and have already passed two of the following three exams: Economy and business administration, Logistic and production system management, Management and organization design. The graduation exam for students in the “Applicativo” concentration  is linked to the traineeship and consists in a critical analysis of the specific project to which the student has contributed. The work is then assessed by a degree commission. Students will be notified regarding the preparation procedures in due time.

Starting from the academic year 2020/2021, when the third year of the new study plan will be activated, the graduation exam will be linked to a company project (e.g., an internship), or it will consist in a lab project, as already described in section 4.1 of this document.

11. International context

As reported by a recent EQUIS (the European Quality Improvement System) survey, the Bachelor of Science in Management and Production Engineering is recognised as a programme of excellence creating a uniform professional profile which unites traditional fundamental engineering competencies with the organisational, corporate and productive skills typical of Business Schools.

In addition to the Erasmus exchange programme, several bilateral agreements are in force. These include double degree programs, Unitech (agreements with Ecole Centrale Paris, ETH Zurich, RWTH Aachen University and others) and specific agreements for joint initiatives with other foreign universities.

 


12. Internationalization

The Bachelor of Science in Management and Production Engineering  encourages international exchanges  and student mobility abroad. The various possibilities may be  found at https://www.polimi.it/en/services-and-opportunities/experience-abroad/ 

During their academic career, students can take courses in foreign Universities. The credits earned abroad may be acknowledged according to specific rules (see section 12.1).  Proposals for  foreign exchanges  must be approved by a Commission delegated by the Programme Board. 12.1 Regulations for the international exchange of bachelor students

12.1.1 Requirements for the acceptance in exchange programmes

All students who have earned an average number of CFUs per semester – starting from the date of enrolment – of 25 or more, regardless of the average score, could be admitted to the international programme, if they pass the call.

It is possible to be admitted to international programmes only once, thus a student who has been in an international programme during the Bachelor degree cannot apply again during the Master degree, but it can participate in exchange programmes using personal funds.

12.1.3 Credits which could be attained from abroad

It is not possible to earn CFUs abroad on modules already attended but whose examinations have not been taken. Students may not leave before the second semester of the second year.

For modules characterising each Track (sectors ING-IND/16, 17, 35, ING-INF/05), it is necessary to find “close” correspondences, in terms of content, with courses at the host University. On the other hand, for non-characterising courses, a correspondence on a subject level is permitted only where a close correspondence cannot be found.

12.1.4 Validation of the credits attended abroad

The Graduation Commission, when deciding on a final score, can also consider results achieved abroad on the basis of an assessment carried out by the coordinator for the international exchange programme the student participated in, and according to the general University Regulations. Scores achieved in examinations taken abroad do not however count to determine the total average score for admission to Bachelor degree graduation.

13. Quantitative data

The Didactic Observation Unit and the Evaluation Nucleus perform periodic analysis on the overall results analysing the teaching activities and the integration of graduates into the work world. Reports and studies are available on the website of the Politecnico di MIlano.
