2. General presentation of the study programmeIntroduction
Electrical Engineering is the engineering field that investigates applications of electrical phenomena by resorting to electromagnetic field and circuit theory. Of particular interest for this sector are electric power systems, electrical machines and drives, electronic power converters, electric systems for transportation, electric and electronic measurements, circuit theory and electromagnetic compatibility. The programme in Electrical Engineering encompasses all the subjects required to educate undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical Engineering. Nowadays, societal and industrial growth is largely based on the availability of energy in a form that can be readily transformed into light, heat, movement, electromagnetic waves for data transmission and remote processing, electro-chemical activity. Electric energy represents the most efficient way to convert energy from primary energy sources and transport it to distant places. Its features make electricity unique for many activities in everyday life, ranging from household, industrial or service applications. Electric energy is clean, easy to control and environment friendly. In our country more than one third of the consumed energy is converted into electric energy before its end use. Electric energy is a precious good that should not be wasted. To attain this goal, all related conversions, from initial production to end use, must be optimized. Presently, the electric energy field is undergoing significant changes that will make the future role of the electrical engineer more and more important as a key player in managing energy and protecting the environment. Electrical Engineering inherently involves cross-disciplinary skills and covers a large number of different application areas. These include electrical machines, electronic power converters, transformers, wide-area electrical transmission and distribution networks, electric systems for household and industrial applications, industrial automation, electric traction, heavy metallurgical industry, electromagnetic compatibility. Production, transmission, distribution and rational and sustainable use of electric energy require B.Sc. and M.Sc. graduates in Electrical Engineering with solid capabilities in designing and managing electric systems and devices, as well as in analyzing and processing all related data. For instance, the need of exploiting renewable energy sources, such as sun and wind, by means of distributed generation that complement the traditional high-power hydro-electric and thermoelectric generation, implies a new way of designing and operating the electric distribution grid. In this field, a significant advancement is expected in the application of ICT techniques to the development of the future intelligent grid (Smart Grids). Moreover, the ever increasing diffusion of complex and disturbance-sensitive equipment (such as, for example, data processing centers) requires an ever increasing level of quality of the electric supply that, in turn, requires new equipment to be studied and developed in order to attain a better immunity of the electrical appliances to disturbances and more reliable and fault-tolerant distribution networks. The development of advanced fuel cells and storage systems will soon favor the diffusion of hybrid and electric vehicles and will significantly contribute to decreasing environment pollution and optimize the use of traditional and/or innovative energy sources. Moving from a regulated toward a de-regulated energy market will undoubtedly open new opportunities for customers, but will also imply new technical problems, whose solution could be found only by highly-qualified Electrical Engineers. These are the key topics of the Electrical Engineering programme. It is aimed at providing the necessary skills to handle all processes involved in the conversion, generation, transmission, distribution and final exploitation of the electric energy both in household and industrial applications. Particular attention is paid to the sustainability of the whole process, from both the financial and environmental points of view. The Electrical Engineering has a long history and tradition (it was first established in 1886 at Politecnico di Milano) and is still providing a well-recognized contribution to the advancement of new technologies that are the key enablers of the industrial growth of the modern society.

The M.Sc. Programme in Electrical Engineering
The M.Sc. programme in Electrical Engineering (second level, two-year programme) allows students to gain solid skills in theoretical, experimental and applied areas of Electrical Engineering. Students can focus on different technological areas and develop diversified expertise, depending on their learning plan. In particular, the following subject areas are addressed in the courses foreseen by this study programme:
• Electromagnetic compatibility and numerical electromagnetics;
• Measurement techniques and diagnosis;
• Design of electrical machinery;
• Production of electricity and electricity plants;
• Transmission, distribution and utilization systems;
• Advanced industrial applications (e.g., automation systems, electric traction systems, e-vehicles);
• Electricity market economic and financial applications.
The main subjects covered by the M.Sc. Programme in Electrical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano are power systems, Smart Grid, renewable sources, transport systems (including Smart Transportation and e-vehicles), electrical machines design, power electronics, industrial automation.
Learning plans include both mandatory and elective courses. This allows students to customize their learning plans (both official and self-designed plans) becoming a specialist in one of the following Areas of Competence: 1) Energy and renewable sources, 2) Transports, 3) Design and automation, 4) Smart Grid.
In the following, possible examples of course baskets in line with the aforementioned Areas of Competence are reported.
Energy and Renewable Sources
- Electric Power Systems II (10 credits);
- Electric Power Stations (8 credits);
- Electricity Market (8 credits);
- Electromagnetic Compatibility A (8 credits);
- Measurement and Diagnosis Techniques (8 credits);
This area addresses topics in electric systems for energy, in consideration of the impact of electronics, automatics and computer science and with particular attention to modern uses of renewable sources. Skills developed in the production, transmission, distribution and use of electricity (e.g. calculations of optimum dispatching, load flow, short circuit, dynamics, reliability) are analyzed and discussed in the current prospective of a deregulated electricity market. Widespread contribution from renewable sources (such as wind, solar and in particular photovoltaic, fuel cells, cogenerative cycles) mainly involves medium and low voltage systems and the revision of structure, control and protection of the distribution system; this is where the quality of electricity supply is important, for the ever-increasing diffusion of equipment that must be problem-free and not cause problems itself. In terms of use, there are skills in the field of drives and innovative systems, for example: storage for a more efficient use of electrical systems, both stationary and on transportation vehicles.
Transport
- Electric Power Systems II (10 credits);
- Electric Systems for Transportation A (8 credits);
- Automatic Electric Transportation Systems (6 credits);

This area explores electric issues associated to transportation systems. The areas focuses mainly on railway systems (including High Speed - High Capacity systems), underground networks (including automatic systems), mass overground urban transport systems (tramlines, trolley buses and light rail), independent transport systems (electric and hybrid vehicles) and electric systems on board ships and airplanes. Both the infrastructural and energy aspects are considered in relation to supply systems together with electromechanic aspects of converting electricity for traction. The issues of safety and speed control, electrical drives and electromagnetic compatibility between power systems and control and signalling systems are also considered. The skills developed ensure training of an electrical engineer with sound methodological and engineering foundations, and an expertise in the transport sector - a sector that increasingly turns to electrical engineering (for example electric propulsion systems for ships and electric vehicles) to optimise resources and for a sustainable development of transport.
Railway Engineering
Starting from academic year 2017-18, a new field of competence oriented to Railway Engineering will be also available to students through ad hoc individual study plans. That learning path will be coordinated jointly by the M.Sc. This specialization area, organized and run in collaboration with Enel S.p.A., deals with the issues related to electricity distribution networks in medium voltage and low voltage, considering the impact of electronic, automatic and computer science, and with particular attention to the modern use of Renewable Energy Sources. A high degree of penetration of DG has considerable impact on operation, control, protection and reliability of the existing power systems and requires the use of technology to modernize the power grid. It employs innovative products and services combined with intelligent monitoring, control, communication, and self-healing technologies to facilitate the connection and operation of DG of all sizes and technologies, allow consumers (including electric vehicles and energy storage systems) to play a part in optimizing the operation of the system, and allow enhanced levels of reliability and security of supply. The skills developed span from activities related to transmission and distribution of electrical energy, network management of electrical systems, which include development, operations, and maintenance services. An important aspect is also related to the regulation of power systems, necessary to establish the tariffs and promote investments in the network, with particular attention to the adequacy, the efficiency and the security of the overall system. This area of competence can be developed only through the choice of the Study Plan Smart Grid.
Further and more detailed information on the Areas of Competence and guidelines to the preparation of individual learning plans are available on the website of the Study Programmes in Electrical Engineering.

Honours Programmes
Honours programme Engineering for Sustainable Development (HP-E4SD)
The Honours Programme Engineering for Sustainable Development is a parallel training programme that takes place at the same time as the Laurea Magistrale programmes (equivalent to Masters of Science) of the School of Industrial and Information Engineering, of the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering and of Bulding Systems Engineering, Building and Architectural Engineering and of Building Engineering/Architecture of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering.
Aim of this Honours Programme is to enhance and to develop the systemic and cross-discipline skills of future engineers, helping them understand and evaluate global challenges so that they may operate effectively in the field of sustainable development, deploying both theoretical and practical technical skills.
The is an innovative training programme aimed at young, talented, competent and highly motivated students, who are selected based on their profile, on their academic career and on a letter of motivation (or statement of purpose). The Honours Programme alternates conventional teaching of extracurricular courses with more informal training experiences, such as seminars, in which students are involved in new experiences and engage in group work. Finally, the programme requires students to develop a technological and/or methodological research project for their thesis, complemented where possible by a field experience (in a national, European or non-European organisation) based on multidisciplinary issues connected with global development.
Honours programme Scientific Research in Information Technology (ESR-IT)
The Honours Programme Scientific Research in Information Technology is an extracurricular excellence programme aimed at offereing M.Sc. students a unique opportunity to familiarize with scientific research in the field of Information Technology. The programme allows students to join and work as a team with a research group with the aim of developing original research results, possibly leading to a scientific publication. It combines research activity conducted in collaboration with research groups of Politecnico di Milano with lectures and seminars specifically delivered for this programme. The programme title will be officially reported in the students’ Transcript of Records together with a brief description of the research activity that will be carried out. 7.4 Foreign languageFor detailed information on the knowledge of the English language, students are invited to see the section Guide and Regulations on Politecnico di Milano website (Student Guide) Language courses https://aunicalogin.polimi.it/aunicalogin/getservizio.xml?id_servizio=204&idApp=1&idLink=43267.5 Degree examinationM.Sc. thesis projects are chosen by the students when they are close to the end of their learnign plan. The choice of the topic is driven by the skills gained during the two years of the M.Sc. study programme, and the specialization area they have selected. Thesis projects proposals are offered by the professors on the Board of the M.Sc. programme on subjects closely related to on-going research lines, in the area of Electrical Engineering. Students usually get in touch with such research activities and relevant labs through teaching activities carried out during the M.Sc. courses. Development of the thesis project may involve cooperation with external laboratories, companies and/or research centers, in Italy or abroad.
Candidates must demonstrate ability to address and elaborate individually on a research problem. Problem solution usually requires both design and research skills. The thesis project supervisor oversees progress of the work, suggesting issues to address and assessing the solutions proposed by the students.
At the end of the thesis project, the students need to defend project results in front of a Board for M.Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering. Thesis defence is open to public. During thesis defence, students shall show ability to present the results they have obtained, underlining novelty, strength and weaknesses of the proposed solutions. Information concerning general rules and regulations, session calendars, registration and consignment of theses is available at https://aunicalogin.polimi.it/aunicalogin/getservizio.xml?id_servizio=204&idApp=1&idLink=4357
