2. General presentation of the study programme

Nuclear Engineering was added to the Italian system of the Engineering Courses in 1955-56. In 1957, the Politecnico di Milano was the first University in Italy to offer this subject in the framework of its courses. The capabilities of providing a complete and adequate learning in the nuclear field was gained during the subsequent years, together with a strong link to the related research aspects. Nowadays, the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering is attended by students from all over Italy.

The strategic validity of nuclear technologies, within their social, environmental and scientific aspects, is higher than fifty years ago. Nuclear Engineering, which was formerly finalized to its energy applications only, was addressed to other applications. It played a fundamental role in creating new disciplines responding to extremely complex problems. It should be remembered that Nuclear Engineering is characterized by a variety of correlated fields and by safety aspects which require a deep and integrated knowledge of each peculiar problem. Therefore the gained culture is effective in a wide variety of high-technology fields.

The M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering aims at training engineers capable of facing the complex aspects which characterize the nuclear subjects. In this M.Sc. programme high emphasis is given to energetic applications, e.g. those referring to fission and fusion plants, the nuclear fuel, materials and safety. Also non-energy applications are accounted for, i.e., i) medical and industrial applications of radiation; ii) radiation detection and measurements; iii) nuclear electronics for radiation detection; iv) radiochemistry; v) radiation protection and vi) material physics, plasma physics and nanotechnologies with a strong link to their impact in the nuclear field. The contemporary presence both in the training and in the research activities of areas has proved to be a high-value qualifying aspect of the Course over the years.

3. Learning objectives

The M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering aims at training engineers capable of facing complex problems in the framework of energetic and non-energy applications of the nuclear field.

The learning programme is structured in order to provide the future engineer with the competences to design, construct and manage complex plants utilizing either radiation fields or the energy generated by nuclear reactions. In particular, these skills are devoted to plants for energy generation, plants for waste reprocessing and disposal, systems exploiting radiation for industrial and medical applications, laboratories for characterizing and developing advanced materials.

Besides giving a deeper knowledge about basics of mathematics and physics, the learning programme is characterized by a strong core constituted by courses on nuclear reactor physics, nuclear plants, radiation detection and measurements and the associated instrumentation, safety of high-risk systems and nuclear materials. Some courses, on the student’s choice, allow to gain a deeper knowledge about the energetic and the non-energy fields.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering is organized according to the following scheme (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System)

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

The MSc degree in Nuclear Engineering satisfies the requirements for applying (prior an admission examination) to a PhD Course. In particular, the knowledge and the capabilities devoted to research in the nuclear field may be deepened in the framework of the PhD Course in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology of the Politecnico di Milano. More details are given in: www.sten.polimi.it.

5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Master degree (MSc) graduate in Nuclear Engineering can operate in high-technology research centres and industry. The MSc graduate possesses the capability of designing and managing sophisticated systems and plants and of conducting complex experiments, by mastering problems requiring multi-disciplinarity. His/her specific competencies apply to nuclear power plants and to other applications of radiation.

The gained title is “laurea magistrale” (MSc degree), belonging to the class LM-30 – Energy and Nuclear Engineering. The MSc graduate can act as a professional after having passed the “Qualifying Examination for Professional Engineers” (www.esamidistato.it) and having joined Section A of the List of the Engineer Order of the province of residence (www.ordineingegneri.milano.it).

5.2 Careers options and profiles

Owing to the multidisciplinary training and their capability of facing complex problems, the MSc graduates in Nuclear Engineering can easily apply to posts offered not only within the nuclear sector (industries operating in electro-nuclear power generation, nuclear plant decommissioning, nuclear waste processing and disposal, design and construction of radiation sources for industrial and medical application, institutes and centres for nuclear fusion and high-energy physics), but in other sectors operating in the field of high-technology, engineering companies, companies for industrial, medical and engineering advice, hospitals, companies for risk analysis and the environmental impact of high-risk plants, engineering companies, regulation agencies, officers of the European Community, research centres and universities.

It should be stressed that the employment opportunities in foreign companies and industries are likely to increase, as it is demonstrated by a fairly large number of graduates from this M.Sc. programme presently working in different Countries belonging to the industrialized world.

Based on academic sources (Career Service, Sector study, available for consultation on websitehttp://cm.careerservice.polimi.it/dati-occupazionali/; section “quantitative data” for the M.Sc. programme, available on www.polimi.it), in 2015 the 96.2% of the M.Sc. graduates have found job or opportunities for further studies (second M.Sc., PhD). This fact confirms the positive situation of the last five years (average percentage of employed greater than 96% in the period 2010-2015).

The high percentage of M.Sc. graduates that continue with further studies is significantly larger than the average figure of the University, even if with a great variability from year to year. In particular, the average figure in the period 2010-2015 is 40% in a range 27-57%.

Excluding the choice of further studies, on the average more than 50 % of graduates have found a job within two months after the degree. Also data about permanent job positions are extremely positive (over 75% in 2013 and 2014, much higher than the average of the entire University).

Besides the analysis of Career Service data, the Board of Study has promoted periodic questionnaires with graduates of the last five years (87 interviews over 202) about their job experience, recording high levels of employment in any areas of work.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification

The admission to the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering undergoes an evaluation process aimed at determining the eligibility of the applicant. Such process, in compliance to the existing regulation (D.M. 22/10/2004 n. 270 art. 6 par. 2 and D.M. 16/3/2007, art.6 par. 1), is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.

The final decision about the admission to the Msc programme shall be taken by an Evaluation Commission set up by the Board of Studies, according to the academic career of the applicant and, if required, through an interview. The Commission may take into account a valid documentation showing clear exceptional conditions, justifying the non-compliance of the below-mentioned criteria and showing that the student has an adequate background. Such documentation shall be attached to the admission application.

If the applicant is admitted, compulsory additional subjects shall be communicated together with the admission and before enrolment, in order to provide students with the necessary information for a transparent and rational choice.

Requirements concerning the English language proficiency levels are presented in Paragraph 7.4.

Application for admission

A Bachelor of Science Degree (Laurea) is required for the evaluation of the career, as well as a higher degree (MSc, Laurea Magistrale). The evaluation can be carried out also for students enrolled in Politecnico di Milano BSc, if they are candidates in the next Graduation session, and for students enrolled in BSc of other Italian Universities, if they shall graduate before enrolling to the MSc.

Admission requirements concerning the academic career considered by the Commission are as follows:

  1. graduation at the Bachelor of Science no later than 31 March of the sixth year after the first enrolment (for example if the first enrolment an Italian University was in September 2012, the degree should be obtained before March 31, 2018); such requirement does not apply for candidates having a MSc;
  2. average graduation mark not below the “adjusted” admission threshold (see below);
  3. certification of the English language proficiency (please see Paragraph 7.4);
  4. further subjects and knowledge are not required (see section 6.2).

If the requirements stated at either point 1) or 2) of the above list are not satisfied,the Commission will evaluate the admission and, in case of a positive decision, assign possible prerequisites. If the requirements stated at either point 3) or 4) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will be accepted to the Msc programme and enrolled, after having satisfied these conditions, by demonstrating his/her proficiency in English and/or obtaining the necessary prerequisites identified and communicated by the Commission.

"Adjusted" admission threshold for candidates with a BSC issued by Politecnico di Milano

Students who gained their Bachelor of Science degree with a score lower than the “adjusted” admission threshold SC will not be admitted to the Msc programme in Nuclear Engineering. The ‘score’ is the average of the exams’ scores, weighted by the ECTS of each exam. BSc graduates from Energy Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano have direct access if they attended specific courses in the framework of their BSc Courses. More details are given in: www.ingnucleare.polimi.it;

For the 2018-2019 academic year, for candidates with a BSc issued by Politecnico di Milano, the “adjusted” threshold is calculated according to this formula:

SC = S + k * (min (N,N1)-3)

Where k = 0, N and N1 not assigned (since k=0) and the values of S are listed in Table 1:

English Proficiency

For a list of the acknowledged certificates and their respective minimum requirements, please see Paragraph 7.4.

Admission without compulsory prerequisites

To be admitted to the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering when the Bachelor of Science degree programme is evaluated as being “consistent” with the M.Sc study programme. The Evaluation Commission verifies these requirements, also ascertaining the need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.

Please see Paragraph 6.2, for a presentation of the evaluation process.

6.2 Requested knowledge

In order to be admitted to the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering applicants must have acquired a knowledge base that is consistent with the study programme offered in the degree course. This means that any prerequisite that is required to prospect students derives either from a lack of “consistency” with the applicant’s Bachelor of Science degree course.

Procedures for the application of prerequisites

An applicant who has been assigned any prerequisites may attend “Individual Courses”, in the period before the enrolment to the Master of Science. The following three opportunities exist:

  • to gain credits by passing courses at the Master of Science level, by means of the “Individual Courses” program; these credits will be accepted to part of the 120 credits necessary for the Master of Science degree.
  • to gain the ‘right to attend’ of courses at the Master of Science level. The same as before if the exam was not passed.
  • to gain credits related to the additional compulsory modules, as requested by the Evaluation Commission for the Master of Science. These credits shall be not accounted within the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree.

Furthermore, the following restrictions are in force:

  1. the total amount of credits (by passing exams or only attending courses) that can be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree cannot exceed 32. Credits in excess of 32 could be only accepted as ‘over-limit exams’ (“soprannumero”).
  2. in any case, the total amount of credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including credits of compulsory prerequisites.

If an applicant does not pass the exams assigned as compulsory prerequisites within 15 months, he or she forfeits his/her right to admission totally and completely.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As specified by didactic regulations, 120 credits are required to obtain the degree.

The degree is obtained upon completion of 120 credits. The activities required to earn these credits are presented in detail in the curricula regulations; they include the preparation of a degree thesis (15 credits).

7.2 Mode of study

Full time attendance is required. Both classroom and laboratory (experimental and numerical) activities are foreseen.

The courses are given in the standard teaching mode (lectures, numerical exercises, computational laboratories, experimental laboratories). Visits at plants or research laboratories are also foreseen. Attendance of lectures is not compulsory and is not recorded, but is strongly advised. Lectures are a major help in learning, and in acquiring the essential critical skills.  Innovative teaching methods will be included in some courses from 2018/19 academic year. Some examples: flipped/blended classrooms, courses under joint tutelage with the business world, soft skills/interdisciplinary courses.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The main goals of the first year of the MSc degree in Nuclear Engineering are:

  • to build a uniform basis of knowledge, by completing the basic topics learnt in the BSc degree by courses which are either compulsory or chosen according to the previous BSc course (20 ECTS). The Courses for acquiring these credits will be assigned by the MSc Access Commission under the advice of the Curricula Commission;
  • to establish a sound knowledge of the basic disciplines of Nuclear Engineering (40 credits).

During the MSc second year the preparation in the subjects characterizing Nuclear Engineering will be completed. To this aim, 30 credits must be acquired within a set of restricted choices, well focused on the specific topics of Nuclear Engineering, while a much broader choice is offered within 15 credits. This broader choice is however organized in three tracks, labeled NP, NT and NSP, because they implement respectively the three specializations in nuclear power plants (Nuclear Plants, NP), in the non-energetic nuclear technologies (Nuclear Technologies’, NT), and in more basic physical topics (Nuclear Systems Physics, NSP).). Three standard curricula are thus available to each student, irrespective of his/her previous expertise. In the same year the student will choose his/her thesis tutor and topic, then working on the thesis preparation (15 credits).

The student can thus enjoy a significant flexibility in achieving a sound knowledge of the disciplines of Nuclear Engineering. The standard curricula do not limit the freedom of choice of the students, but they rather guide the choice along consistent paths and objectives. Furthermore, the student can build his own autonomous curriculum (Piano di Studio Autonomo, PSA) to propose a specific focus, not already present in the standard curricula. Each autonomous curriculum will need approval by the faculty (a commission named by the Council of the Course in Nuclear Engineering, Consiglio di Corso di Studio, CCS) which will assess the goals and the consistency of the autonomous curriculum, and the compliance to basic requisites.

All the three standard curricula of the second year are available to each student, irrespective of the standard curriculum followed in the first year.

The general structure of the curricula is listed below: the courses are presented for each year, following the standard curricula.

1st YEAR

20 credits (20 ECTS)  will be assigned from Table T, by the MSc Access Commission under the advice of the Curricula Commission and according to the previous BSc student’s curriculum. Further details are available on: http://www.ingnucleare.polimi.it/

ASPRI programme

The M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering includes the ASPRI programme. This programme was offered for the first time by the School of industrial Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano during the academic year 2008-09. The programme is intended for students with high skill for research and aims at improving the students’ skill in order train engineers to be devoted to science and technological research. The ASPRI programme falls within the strategy for high level training of the Politecnico di Milano and supports the students’ specialization. The programme is structured through the traditional Course of Nuclear Engineering, but gives the opportunity of deepening some aspects of the student’s training from the point of view of both methodology and subjects. For this purpose the programme foresees additional training activities in several disciplines and within the Msc Thesis (20 additional credits including the ones listed in the ASPRI table). The access requirements and the modalities of attendance are described on: www.ingnucleare.polimi.it . The maximum number of students who will be admitted to the ASPRI programme in the academic year 2018/19 is five.

Additional MSc Degree in Nuclear Engineering (for MSc graduates in Mathematical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano.

An additional MSc Degree in Nuclear Engineering can be awarded by MSc graduates in Mathematical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, who attended the track “Mathematical-Physical Models for Nuclear Applications”. For this purpose, these graduates should enroll at the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering and attend only an additional year, as specified in: http://www.ingnucleare.polimi.it/. The students enrolled in this program can discuss the MSc Thesis of the MSc degree in Mathematical Engineering during their final degree examination (corresponding to 15 ECTS).

Students’ exchange programme between Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino.

In the framework of the agreement for students’ exchange between Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, a selected number of students can apply to the second year attendance of the MSc in Energy and Nuclear Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino. These students should enroll at the M.Sc. programme in Nuclear Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, by attending a specific track, as it is specified in: http://www.ingnucleare.polimi.it/.

7.4 Foreign language

The School of Industrial and Information Engineering adopted, without any modification, the regulations approved by the Academic Senate for the whole Politecnico, concerning the knowledge of a foreign language, including the vocabulary of specific disciplines.

In order to be enrolled to the MSc programme, the student must own a certification stating a knowledge of the English language at the level required by the Politecnico di Milano. Since the knowledge of a foreign language is a pre-requisite for admission, no further tests will be performed during the MSc programme.

7.5 Degree examination

The degree examination consists of the presentation and the discussion of the work autonomously performed by the student in the preparation of the thesis. The final examination offers the student a further opportunity to deepen and verify the skills concerning the analysis, the elaboration and the presentation of the performed work. It consists of a discussion, face to the graduation commission, of the results achieved in the thesis activities.

The straightforward choice of a thesis tutor is for a teacher of the Nuclear Engineering curriculum, but the regulations of the Final Examination also allow each student to choose any Politecnico teacher, provided the Council of the Course in Nuclear Engineering is fully informed of the choice.
