2. General presentation of the study programme

The training career of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Study Programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors” faces the architectural project with reference to the problems of modification and regeneration of consolidated urban and settlement fabric, the insertion, transformation, recovery, restoration and enhancement interventions. Particular attention is given to the search of new ways of contemporary living, understood as a complex and transversal phenomenon, ranging from residence to work places, from culture to free time, from collective services to wide museum systems, verified at different intervention levels up to the definition of the interior space and construction detail.

The Study Programmes provides a correct balance among theoretical, practical and application aspects, integrating the design with the necessary environmental, economic and social sustainability and feasibility requirements.

The training objectives are aimed to foster the acquisition of knowledge, skills and expertise necessary for an architect to deal with present and future challenges of the project, for a conscious and sustainable transformation and management of the built environment, with particular attention to the problems of weak territories.

The Laurea Magistrale Study Programme represents a single starting point complying with the EU requirements regarding the Architect's training and related to the recognition of validity of qualification.

 

In detail, in the first year, there are two specialised theoretical courses - related to the scientific-technical disciplines and history of contemporary architecture, necessary to provide theoretical and technical knowledge to be applied immediately in experimental design activities - and four design Design Studio that allow the student to have a confrontation with different specialised skills proper of architect's professional activity such as architectural and urban planning design; restoration project; interior design and the one with the aim of technological design and architecture construction. In addition, a specific programme to acquire advanced knowledge of Computational Design is active throughout the two-year period.

The second year provides three compulsory monographic courses, one referred to contemporary architectural design, one to economic evaluation of projects and one to social or economic or legal science. Furthermore, two optional courses and two optional laboratories, allow the student to complete his/her training career through the choice of the subjects to study in detail. Finally, the last semester completely dedicated to the preparation of the Final graduation work and to carry out a work experience due the presence of a compulsory internship activity.

The optional courses can be selected within a wide and articulated offer out of the several Study Programmes of the School.

The optional Design Studio of the second year are available in both semesters: those of the first semester have a disciplinary characterization (Architecture Technology, Preservation, Architecture of Interior and Urban Design); those of the second semester - preparatory to the development of the Graduation Work - have a thematic and trans-discipline character that reflects the main research career developed by professors within the department.

This study programme offers two study plans previously approved (PSPA), one in the Italian language and another one in English. 

3. Learning objectives

The architect, from landscape to single building, works today in highly defined, complex, and differently built environments. This condition, far from being a limit, has elements of great interest, which can be easily transferred to an adequate and up-to-date training programme. An effective enhancement of building heritage, landscape and environment, intended as resources, in contrast with the logic of degradation and waste, both material and cultural, and at the same time aware of the needs imposed by the general and specific processes of change, is the basis of every possible sustainable development. From this point of view, the new project is necessarily referred to contextual conditions, always to be compared, from building to landscape level, with the different environmental systems, with different urban and settlement morphologies, with real data of construction, from design of details to resolution of structural, installation and infrastructure problems.

The graduate students of Laurea Magistrale Study Programme “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors” can further develop the general knowledge and understanding of the main architectural design issues acquired in the first laurea cycle, with a specific focus on the issues about modification and regeneration of consolidated urban and settlement fabric.

 

Within an Italian and European architectural tradition, Design Studio are the excellent place for teaching, and the architecture design a perfect tool for learning, research and experimentation.

Theoretical courses can be considered as integration of the design experience, together with the optional courses that can be selected within a wide and articulated offer, even with possible in-depth study of different disciplines.

An additional educational opportunity comes from the many thematic workshops that, at different stages during the year, offer intensive design experiences focused on specific topics.

 

Through the repetition of practical-application experiences, the Laurea Magistrale Study Programme provides design expertise and skills related to:

- the definition of relations between built and social, environmental and economic aspects, to different levels of intervention, in order to guarantee the quality of the transformation processes, the quality of living and improvement of quality of community life, according to local needs and different contexts;

- an appropriate use of resources, to ensure the development of an ecologically balanced and sustainable built environment, with a responsible design approach to natural, cultural and landscape heritage;

- control of formal and technological, environmental and economic aspects through a design approach that focuses on the realization dimension of buildings and spaces and process management, during the different stages of the life cycle and of the building process (design, construction, use and disposal) and different intervention levels;

- the design for development and coordination of complex and different interventions related to contexts, landscapes and ways of contemporary living in consolidated urban and settlement fabric;

- technological and environmental design, with in-depth study of innovative processes, methodologies and executive design tools, in the context of complex relations required, during the project, to fulfil the functional, environmental and energy requirements;

- the interior architecture, with particular reference to museum design and wide museum systems, to the project of enhancement of the built and environmental heritage, through requalification, reuse and recovery projects, as well as to installation and design of the domestic and public space;

- the restoration and conservation project at different levels.

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

5.1 Professional status of the degree

This Course requires full time involvement and includes Courses comprising lectures and practice, and Studio based course activities with compulsory attendance, Seminars and Visits.

The Laurea Magistrale Study Programme in architecture trains a high-quality designer in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC and subsequent integrations.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

The laurea magistrale graduate students can find different opportunities for employment.

They can participate or activate structures of professional services (in accordance with the laws in force in different countries, today in Italy under a deep reorganization) both with general characteristics as well as through the proposal of operative peculiarities with different levels of characterization (sectoral or specialist ones) especially in the field of insertion, transformation, recovery and built enhancement interventions.

They can also have different roles and competences, with significant responsibilities, in the wide range of duties available in the different institutions, bodies, enterprises, companies, service and design companies (private, public or both) available in this sector in Italy as well as abroad.

5.3 Qualification profile

Architect

profile in a work context:
Highly qualified designer profile, able to face the architectural project as a transformative operator of the built environment and inhabited space, in the formal, social, historic, utilitarian, technological-constructive components according to the different levels that connect each intervention to a wider and more complex context.
 The EU graduate student in Architecture is a professional profile able to carry out managerial duties in public and private institutions and bodies (Public administration, Local authorities, enterprises) and professional services in professional studies and design companies, developing the relevant tasks concerning project, construction, and transformation of the built environment.

- coordinate complex project operations;
 - design the whole system, at different levels, from project creation to realization of product;
 - manage, with culture and sensitivity, the whole range of possible design interventions, from new construction, maintenance and restoration, from reuse to re-qualification, from integration to substitution;
 - face the problems involved in contexts, landscapes and ways of contemporary living, with particular attention to the issue of environmental compatibility;
- read, understand and define the relationship between man and building, shape and proportion, size and organization of spaces.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification

For admission to the Laurea Magistrale Programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors”, it is necessary:

- a diploma of the class of degree L-17 (or of the class 4 former Ministerial Decree 509/1999) without curricular integrations or degree obtained abroad, recognized as valid;

- fulfilled the indispensable training activities shown in the table and relating to the degree in Architectural Science L-17, considered a mandatory educational requirement, in accordance with EEC Directive 85/384 and its recommendations;

- having passed the entrance test required for enrolling for a degree programme and/or single-cycle Laurea Magistrale, explicitly finalised for “architect training”, as regulated at national level.

6.2 Requested knowledge

Curricular requirements are the qualification obtained and the skills and knowledge that the student has acquired in the previous training career, expressed as credits referring to specific scientific-disciplinary sectors. Furthermore, for admission to the Laurea Magistrale Study Programmes, an appropriate level of English language is required, decided by the University.

 

The students, in order to be admitted to the Laurea Magistrale Programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors”, are subject to pass the selection test, consisting of a comparative assessment which takes into account their previous career (on the basis of documentation submitted by the applicant at the time of enrolment) and possibly other significant training or adequately documented professional experiences.

 

Furthermore, for admission to the Laurea Magistrale Study Programmes, an appropriate and certified level of English language is required, as decided by the University.

The admission can require the completion of curricular integration as well as the recognition of credits already acquired that vary according to the Laurea of origin.

For the purposes of admission to the Laurea Magistrale Study Programme, possible curricular integration, in terms of ECTS, must be acquired before the enrolment.

Based on the selection test, a list of candidates will be drawn up and used until all available places will be assigned. In the admission period of February, a number of students, equal to the places described in the next paragraph, plus places not occupied in September, will be allowed to enrol, according to the ranking list.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

Attainment of the 120 Credits (ECTS) specified in the Educational Regulations. In particular, the minimum standard guaranteed by law for specializing activities is 48 ECTS (Architectural and Urban Design, Branches of History of Architecture, Urban Planning and Regional Planning, Analysis and Structural Building Planning, Environmental Technical Physics, Restoration, Building Mechanics, Topography and Cartography, Landscape Architecture). For related or integrative activities, the minimum standard guaranteed by law is 12. 24 Credits are awarded for apprenticeship and the final exam.

7.2 Mode of study

The EU Graduate's professional areas are the freelance and the practitioner in institutions and in the public and private sectors (institutional agencies, public and private sector, private firms and studios), working in the field of urban and regional development and transformation.

It is a full-time Programme; it includes attendance to training activities consisting of lessons and exercises, Compulsory laboratory and Workshop. 

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The Laurea Magistrale study programme consists of two Study Plans Previously Approved (PSPA): the first one in Italian language and the other one in English.

Both PSPAs provide optional courses and Design Studio to allow the student to complete his/her training career through an in-depth study of subjects of greatest interest.

^(e) The Miaw workshop is not compulsory and will be held from 13 to 24 January 2020. It replaces 4 cfu of optional teachings. While filling in the study plan (August 26 - September 6, 2019), students will be able to choose the international professor expressing the order of their preference for a section. Students will be allocated meritocratically based on the weighted average of the exams (summer session). A generic workshop code will be automatically inserted In the study plans of the students who are not admitted. The workshop then may be defined, or replaced by a teaching of the second semester, during the period of modification of the study plan in February.

7.3.1 Organization of training activities, attendance and assessment procedures.

Training activities are organized in Single Subject and Integrated Course Programmes and Laboratories. Each one has a number of credits as shown in the Degree Programme of the Study Programme.

-          Single Subject Courses can provide procedures of in-course evaluation and end with an exam.

-          The Integrated Courses can provide in-course tests and they are organized according to modules provided by different professors that are part of a single examination commission. Each Integrated Course has a single exam for the student.

-          There are Design Studio coordinated by professors responsible for the integrated modules in the laboratory. The Laboratory attendance is compulsory for at least 70% of the whole number of hours. Attendance is verified by all professors responsible of the laboratory, based on criteria according to their training organization. Laboratory activities end with an examination carried out by the Commission made by all responsible professors.

The University has decided that a university educational credit (ECTS) corresponds to 25 hours of student work, including front-of-class teaching activities and the individual study activity.

 

7.3.2 Types of training

The types of training provided, in order to ensure the cultural and professional education of students, consist of lectures, exercises, laboratory activities (computer, experimental and design activities), seminars, study visits, internship activities. In some cases, the didactic offer foresees innovative learning modules.

Teaching activities include also checking of learning, Tutoring and Orientation activities.

7.4 Foreign language

Certified English language knowledge is necessary in order to be evaluated for admission.

7.5 Degree examination

The Laurea Magistrale Study Programme ends with the degree examination, where the final work is presented and discussed (the graduation work can be done individually or in groups according to the rules established by the General Regulations for Laurea Magistrale - Master of Science - Graduation exams and by the Supplementary Regulations of the Study Programme in Architecture - Built Environment Interiors). The Final graduation work is developed during the second semester of the second year, also through participation to the Final Thesis Studio and under the guidance of a professor as Thesis Supervisor who also must provide his/her approval to the content. Alternatively, the Graduation work can be developed independently by submitting an application and by immediately identifying a Supervisor among the professors of the School, who is required to approve its content.

For presentation of the final work, the candidate can use digital, audio/video or paper media. The maximum time available for the Graduating student to discuss the final work is about 30 minutes (40 minutes for groups) including 10 minutes for any questions from the Commission (15 minutes for groups). 

The candidate must make available to the Commission members, during the discussion, at least two paper copies of the Final work file stored in the University on-line repository (TeDOC).

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

Library

The Central Architecture Library has about 60.000 Italian and foreign scientific works, mainly dedicated to architecture, art, urban planning, design, interior design, landscape, restoration and museum studies. A special section is dedicated to the works of the city of Milan. All texts used and recommended in the Study Programme courses of the Schools of Architecture and Design are available. In the reference sector, you can consult the main thematic and general encyclopaedias, yearbooks and codes in the field of urban planning and building. About 1000 magazines are also available, including 400 currently with subscription. The main periodicals are available on CD ROM, related to art and architecture, and a wide range of publications focused on the same themes. The library has the doctoral dissertations related to Ph.D. Programme coordinated by the Departments.

MOA - Modelling Laboratory

In the Model making laboratory, created in 1987, architectural models are developed at different levels, from urban and territory to the building point of view, interiors and objects of use, through a careful interpretation and verification of the design or project drawings and the material characteristics of the work that must be represented. During the realization phase, it is possible to use many executive techniques, materials and finishes, related to the different possible uses of the models, from project verification that must still be studied to the final presentation of designed architectures or to the scale reconstruction of existing works.

SaperLab

The Superlab Lab is an educational and research structure that meets the needs of students and professors about being updated and development of techniques, materials and building systems for architecture. It is a place for the archive of technical documents, to study true samples of construction details, for the updating on materials and construction systems, with particular attention to innovative technologies and with the aim to become the reference point for students, PhD students, professors and even professionals.

Urban Simulation Laboratory

The Fausto Curti Urban Simulation Laboratory is a research structure of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of Politecnico di Milano. Founded at the beginning of 2007 by Fausto Curti and Peter Bosselmann, director of the Environmental Simulation Laboratory at the University of California of Berkeley, the laboratory works on urban planning. Through an interdisciplinary approach focused on the perceptual and environmental aspects and through the support of different simulation methods, the laboratory activities contribute to a cross-reading of the complex connections that link the project with the urban context, ensuring a greater control of the cumulative outcomes.

Archivio Piero Bottoni

With over 90,000 document units, the Piero Bottoni Archive is, since its foundation in 1983 by Giancarlo Consonni, Lodovico Meneghetti and Graziella Tonon, one of the most important collections of Politecnico di Milano. In 1999, the ratification of the donation of the whole documentary heritage by the Bottoni's heirs (his wife Giudi Rossini Bottoni and his sons Piero Alessandro and Stella) to Politecnico di Milano that provided this heritage to the Department of Architectural Design and, after the dissolution of the latter, in 2012, to the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies. In addition to widely documenting the activities of Piero Bottoni (1903-1973), very important figure in the Italian architectural and urban culture of the twentieth century, the Archive collects original drawings and documents of many other authors, including Le Corbusier and Terragni.

TEXTILES HUB - INTERDEPARTMENTAL TEXTILES AND POLYMERS RESEARCH LABORATORY

Textile Architecture Network (TAN) is founded in 2008 and based on clustering different skills and knowledge on innovative textile materials and polymers available in different Departments of Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI). It is focused on developing the technological advancement of technical textiles applied in different areas of interest. The main goal is promoting development of lightweight materials and constructions in architecture (tensile, membranes, inflatable systems, Fiber Reinforced Plastics, etc.), teaching students, spreading knowledge among wide public with a vision to improve the built environment  through innovative application of flexible and lightweight materials, users' comfort, experience, building quality and sustainability. http://www.textilearchitecture.polimi.it/

POLINDT - LABORATORY FOR STRUCTURAL MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICS

POLINDT's main objective is the research in the field of innovative methods for diagnostics and monitoring of stability, functionality and durability in civil and mechanical engineering structures and components. The PoliNDT laboratory also wants to be a starting point for education on the issues of structural diagnostics and monitoring, in the context of study programmes and PhD programmes and in professional post-graduate development activities.

CECH (CLIMATE AND ENERGY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE)

The CECH Laboratory, established at the end of 2014 and currently coordinated by Cesare Maria Joppolo, is active on the subject of indoor climate and on the efficient use of energy in the specific context of preventive conservation, restoration and use of historic buildings and of fixed cultural assets, fixtures or furniture in them, especially when these buildings are museums. The Laboratory is responsible for monitoring and evaluating existing conditions and identifying and planning preventive conservation, maintenance and recovery interventions; therefore, it supports an innovative research on the knowledge and level of the energy potential of historic buildings, on the consequent small interventions to control the indoor environmental conditions and on the upgrading and restoration techniques of the building and services, in an important context for what concerns size and value of the heritage and for the interest in careful and respectful solutions in the interventions of the existing restrictions and of the climatic context and external atmospheric pollution.

UrbNetLab

UrbNetLab deals with research and consulting activities for administrations, at every level and private operators in the field of implementation planning. It wants to understand how to help the implementation process of urban planning forecasts, coming from structural and strategic plans, from supra-local plans, or from simple intentions of operators, administrators, economic subjects, and players of different nature.

11. International context

The international experience, where students from abroad are supported by Italian students, has been tested since many years.

The activation of courses in English has greatly helped to strengthen and activate the cooperation networks with a large number of international Universities, also in relation to the Erasmus and Double Degree Programmes http://www.auic.polimi.it/en/international-area/experience-abroad/ through the creation of the main structure with an identity defined by the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering and its Study Programmes, and among those the Laurea Magistrale Programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors”. 

12. Internationalization

Methods

Within the framework of international exchange programmes (EU and non-EU), the student may spend a period of study abroad, which usually lasts one semester, according to the following:

•        during the 2nd semester of the 1st year of LM;
•        during the 2nd year of LM, only in the 1st semester (the stay can also be of one year, if previously approved by the competent bodies of the School).
• students that carry out the graduation work with two examiners (one supervisor of AUIC School and the other one of the foreign exchange university), with the agreement of the professors concerned, can spend the mobility period in the 2nd semester.

The academic calendars of partner schools are not always the same to the one of the Study Programme. The student is then required to be acknowledged of that, in order to submit a conscious application, assessing any possible overlaps.

Selected students must agree, with the Mobility Promoter, on a Study Plan, equivalent to the courses of the foreign university where they will go, up to a maximum of 40 ECTS if the exchange lasts one semester, and 80 ECTS for one year. The student who develops the Final graduation work abroad must obtain, in addition to the 10 ECTS for Final work, also 12 ECTS corresponding to the Final Thesis Laboratory.

Foreign students enrolled in LM programmes, participating in an international mobility programme, will be able to acquire a maximum of 40 ECTS if the exchange lasts one semester, and 64 ECTS for one year.

1 Admission to the Programme - Students with Italian Degrees

 

All candidates for admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of  Science) Programmes at the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering are required to submit an application for career assessment using the specific function available on the University website, in the Online Services section (www.polimi.it/servizionline).

 

1.1    Programme Requirements and Specifications

The requirements are those previously described in paragraph 6.1 of the Educational Rules.

1.2    Procedures for Submission of Admission Applications for AUIC School Candidates

 

1.2.1 Programme and Previously Approved Study Plan Options

 

Candidates submitting an application for assessment must choose their Programme (CdS) together with their Previously Approved Study Plan (PSPA) options where required.

The University rules establish a maximum of three options for application for admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes. It is therefore possible to indicate up to three Programme preferences.

For each Programme, it is possible to specify the available Previously Approved Study Plans in order of preference.

For AUIC School Programmes, the various Previously Approved Study Plan options within the same Programme are only counted once towards the maximum of three preferences that may be expressed.

Example:

Students may, within the established deadline, change/overwrite their choices up until the time the application is processed for assessment by the Commission.

 

1.2.2 Establishment of the Ranking List for the Programme/Previously Approved Study Plan

For each Programme, students may indicate their Previously Approved Study Plan choices in order of preference (differentiated by Italian or English language, campus or curriculum). For the admission ranking list, only the first Previously Approved Study Plan choice indicated is taken into account.

If the student is not admittted to the PSPA (track) expressed as first choice because of unavailability of places, he/she will be considered for the second choice, with regard to the position in the ranking and to the places available.

 

1.3      Assessment Parameters

1.3.1 Graduate Students from the Politecnico di Milano Automatically Entitled to Admission

The following are automatically entitled to admission to their first-choice Programme and precede all other candidates in the ranking list:

students who have gained a Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science), in accordance with the admission requirements, from the Politecnico di Milano and who:

•          graduated within 4 years of their initial enrolment;
•          have a fulfilled N/V parameter* by 10th October of the second calendar year after their initial enrolment;
•          hold certification of English language learning by the established deadline.

 

The Previously Approved Study Plan allocation is determined using the ranking list calculated based on the weighted average achieved by the final deadline for submission of the assessment application.

 

For "Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors" Programmes, the N and V parameters are as follows:

- Students enrolled between the A.Y. 2003/04 and the A.Y. 2009/10: N/V 100/25

- Students enrolled since the A.Y.  2010/11: N/V 104/27

 

Admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes of category LM-4 is not permitted for graduate students in categories L-21 and L-23 (with the exception of graduate students in Architecture and Building Production from the Politecnico di Milano, admitted with educational debits), even with a fulfilled N/V parameter, or from other non-compliant degree categories.

 

*The N and V parameters (number of ECTS and average) required can be found in the student’s Study Plan. These may vary depending on the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme applied for.

 

1.3.2 Students Admitted with Assessment of Merit

Students not automatically entitled to admission, external students and students transferred from another Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme are subject to assessment of merit.

This assessment is performed by the relevant Programme, which may award up to 150 points:

 

- up to 110 points = assessment of the educational curriculum (weighted average of examination scores on a basis of at least 145 credits earned). The average of the examination scores recorded in the Plan at the time of assessment will be considered valid;

- up to 20 points = assessment of a portfolio of work including text and iconographic material, which will be assessed according to the criteria of content originality and coherence, formal quality, discursive and graphic ability and linguistic expression;

- up to10 points = assessment of experiences of traineeship or extra-curricular work fully documented, certified by the company, relevant and significant to the training of an architect and not used to validate required credits during the previous career;

- up to10 points = assessment of other qualifications (certified) in research or extra-curricular training thoroughly documented, relevant and significant to the training of an architect and not used to validate required credits during the previous career.  The starting/end date of each internship experiece/extracurricular actvity must be specified.

 

Students required to submit a portfolio are eligible for admission with a minimum score of 100. At each deadline date, the top ranked students are accepted according to the planned number of admissions for that semester. Should there be eligible students with equal scores, their precedence in the ranking will take into account their weighted average until all available places have been filled.

 

1.4      Documents Required for Students Automatically Entitled to Admission to the Programme

All students automatically entitled to admission must submit an admission application. Assessment is based solely on the educational curriculum (Study Plan) for identification of any examination or attendance validation requirements.

No documents should be attached to the career assessment application.

 

1.5     Documents Required for Students Admitted with Assessment of Merit

1.5.2 Students from Other Universities

Admitted with assessment of merit

•          Self-certification of the degree held (graduate students only)
•          Self-certification of examinations passed for at least 145 credits. Other certifications of any university degrees held: Masters, PhDs, and Postgraduate Schools

The documentation may be self-certified in accordance with the statutory provisions governing Substitute Declarations (Dichiarazioni sostitutive). It must contain the exact titles of the examinations taken, the Disciplinary Scientific Sectors, the number of credits per scientific sector, the score and the examination recording date. The applicant must sign the documents, otherwise they are not legally binding and cannot be accepted by the Selection Committee.

1.5.3 Students who have Submitted an Admission Application during Previous Sessions

Students wishing to confirm the score obtained by a portfolio submitted during previous semesters must to re-enter the previously-assessed portfolio indicating  in the "student's notes”:

“I confirm the portfolio assessment previously obtained during semester ….  of the academic year ……”

 Students who have already applied for admission in previous application windows, and wish to integrate their portfolio, should upload the portfolio used for previous applications/s, adding a section dedicated to integrations. In the notes of the application, it should be specified:

“Integration to the portfolio already evaluated for application to the academic year ……, ….semester.”

The application wil not be considered, should the student not specify one or the other indication in the notes of the application.

 

1.6      Results and Publication of the Ranking List of Students Admitted

With regard to the points above, at the end of the evaluation sessions, a merit based ranking will be published, in order to the determine the number of admitted students in relation to the places available.

In order to guarantee the foreseen number of places, a student that has been positively evaluated for admission (green check) might not be able to enroll. Enrolment will be enabled to students who appear in the merit based ranking as “admitted to enrolment”.

The ranking reporting the indication of the admitted students will be published at the end of the evaluation session at the page: www.auic.polimi.it

It is not possible to re-assign places in the ranking, in case not all admitted students proceed with enrollment. Vacant places will be added to those foreseen for the second semester.

Admitted students should proceed with enrolment following the modalities and deadlines set by the the University.  Appeals to enroll after the deadline will not be accepted. 

In order to complete the enrolment procedure, you must have achieved your bachelor degree.

Any places that should become available will be used for Semester-Two enrolments and will not be passed down the ranking list.

 

1.7      Examination Validation

The deliberation n. 14779 23/03/2015 of the Academic Senate, establishes that in case of abbreviation of a study career, it is necessary to achieve at least 60 ECTS credits at Politecnico di Milano, in order to achieve a degree at this University: the 60 ECTS credits include curricular subjects, except for the internship and final thesis, which must be carried out in addition to the 60 ECTS credits. The School establishes that credits which can be validated from a previous career are only those belonging to a Master of Science career carried out in a country of the European Union.

Validated credits will automatically appear in the student’s study plan.

 

 

2     Admission to the Programme - Students with Foreign Degrees

Students with foreign degrees should follow the pre-enrolment procedure described on the Polinternational website (http://www.polinternational.polimi.it/), observing the established deadlines. By following this procedure, students can apply for merit scholarships and obtain further information on organising their stay in Italy during the post-admission phase.

 

3     Transfers and Changes

Requests for transfers and changes are subject to submission of an application in accordance with these Rules, and applicants must meet the same requirements and observe the same deadlines established for submission of assessment and enrolment applications, as described in the above paragraphs.

No transfers or changes are possible during Semester Two.

For the academic year 2018/19, no transfers or changes are possible during the second year of the Programme.

The second-year Degree Programme Study Plan will be activated starting from the academic year 2018/19 with regard to updating of the School’s Programmes.

 

4      Deadlines for First-Year Enrolment Administrative Procedures

Deadlines of all administrative procedures will be published in the academic calendar and on the website.

5     Study Plan

Students are required, under their own responsibility, to submit their individual Study Plan.

The Study Plan is taken by the School as a supporting document for all intents and purposes. Its compilation also attests to the compliance of the choices made by the student with the rules specified by law and the provisions of the Programme Rules.

The Study Plan for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors” consists of 120 ECTS, to be included in the Plan as required credits, subdivided as follows:

-          single-subject or integrated courses

-          studios

-          elective activities

-          traineeship

-          final test

The minimum number of credits for which students may enrol each year is 30 (15 for entry in February). Simultaneous enrolment on courses for a maximum of 80 credits per year is permitted. For any detail regarding costs and taxes, please refer to the University Web site.

In the first year, the Digital Skills courses are offered in both semesters, in order to be attended by both incoming students, in September (in the semester from February 2019) and in February 2019 (in the semester from September 2019).

For students enrolled in February, for what concerns the postponement of the semester, a specifically dedicated educational offer is provided for them in the second year, in order to allow the regular carrying out of educational activities. As for the second year, Topic and Thesis Design Studio are provided both in the first and second semester, in order to allow students to attend the Design Studio in the correct order and to develop the final work in their last semester.

It is necessary to include a course in the Study Plan in order to benefit from the associated educational services, i.e. attend lectures, appear on the Professor’s lists, participate in exercises, participate in practical and complementary activities (studios, seminars, projects, etc.), be admitted (through enrolment in exam sessions)to in-course assessments and examinations, and receive an examination assessment.

Please note: It is advisable to always save and print the Study Plan submitted.

Plan alteration requests will not be accepted. Submission of the Study Plan is definitive and must be performed within the deadlines and according to the procedures established by the School. When choosing courses, the teaching timetable must be consulted in advance in order to avoid timetable clashes.

 

5.1      Deadlines for Annual Study Plan Submission

Study Plan submission is performed through Online Services (www.polimi.it/servizionline > Customized Services > Career Data > Study Plan Submission), exclusively during the specific periods established by the academic calendar.

 

 

5.2      Half-year Change of Study Plan

In a dedicated window set in the academic calendar, it will be possible to change the Study Plan submitted during the academic year in progress.

Half-year change of Study Plan is optional. Students not wishing to make any alterations do not need to change the Study Plan.

 

It is possible to change only courses included in the current academic year. It is not possible to add or remove first-semester courses. Students must deselect the second-semester courses they wish to change.

It will therefore be possible to add or remove, within the second semester only, optional and compulsory courses not subject to allocation of merit, final test and traineeship.

 

5.3      Additional Payment

Through resolution of the Board of Governors, an additional payment of 100.00 euros is applicable for failure to submit the Study Plan within the deadlines established by the academic calendar.

The payment will be requested with the second instalment.

 

5.4      Attendance

Once entered in the Study Plan, courses remain in the following years as attendance achieved. During compilation of the Study Plan for the following year, it will be possible to remove the attendance achieved and re-enter the courses as new attendance.

The final test and traineeship are entered one time only during the entire university career.

 

5.4.1 Studios

Attendance of at least 70% of the Studio hours is compulsory. The attendance achieved does not expire but the examination must be taken within the three sessions of the academic year following the one in which attendance takes place. Should this time expire, the Studio must be entirely re-attended and re-entered in the Study Plan.

 

5.4.2 Digi Skills 

Students are due to register to and attend Digi Skills activity according to the deadlines set by the School.

Digi Skills activities are worth 4 credits and will be validated only if the student has attended 70%of the lessons and has passed the examinations foreseen by the professor.

5.5      Courses as Extra

It is possible to add courses/educational activities, included in the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Masters of Science), to the Study Plan as extras. These courses will not count towards the overall credits required for admission to the final test and will not be used in calculation of the score average.

It is possible to change the status of a course from required to extra, and vice versa, during the annual Study Plan submission period.

For all regulations, reference should be made to the specific University guide.

 

 

6     Allocations

 

6.1      Studios

 

Upon submission of the Study Plan, students must choose a number of Studio options equal to the number of sections available.

The allocation is based on merits, according to the rules established by the School and no reallocation will be possible.

The incoming Erasmus students (coming from foreign universities) will be able to attend the Thesis Laboratory only if they are developing their thesis in co-tutorship with professors of Politecnico.

The outgoing Erasmus students (of Politecnico), who want to develop their thesis abroad, must find a supervisor of both the CdS and the foreign university (co-tutorship).

The Design Studio can have a maximum of 50 regular students.

Students will be placed according to merit, taking into account the parameters indicated in the following table:

The score 30/30 cum laude will be calculated as equal to 33/30.

 

To avoid students being penalised due to any delays in examination enrolment or validation, the parameter G will be calculated based on the career followed during the summer session.

For all students returning from Erasmus, it will not be possible to take the scores into account unless previously validated on the Plan prior to allocation.

Any admitted students who, for whatever reason, delay enrolment beyond the established deadlines will be automatically placed in the available sections.

Students are not permitted to attend studios or courses not included in the Plan. Under no circumstances may assessments relating to activities not included in the Study Plan, or not attended in accordance with the section allocations, be recognised or validated.

 

6.2   Single-subject and Integrated Courses

In sections in which there are elective courses or various sections of the same single-subject or integrated course, students must express their preferences as set out by the online system and will be allocated places according to merit in accordance with the criteria indicated in the above point.   Courses may have a maximum of 120 regular students enrolled for the A.Y. 2017/2018.

 

6.3      Course Priorities

 

The University, upon resolution of the Academic Senate, has established the following priority types:

Suggested priority	Does not establish any formal restriction. Aims to provide students with useful information on the sequence of courses but does not affect the composition of the Study Plan or examination recording.
Study Plan composition priority	Establishes a restriction which must be observed when choosing courses upon submission of the Study Plan. It is not possible for course ‘B’ to be included in the Study Plan if course ‘A’ (even if not passed) has not been included.  This does not affect examination recording.
Examination recording priority	Establishes a restriction which must be observed both during Study Plan compilation and during 'positive' examination recording (passing of the course). It is not possible for ‘B’ to be recorded if ‘A’ has not been recorded.

 

The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) study programme in “Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors”, in addition to comply with the sequence of courses as established by the degree programme, does not provide any more constrain but the non-eligibility to attend to three Design Studio during the same semester.

7     Elective Activities

In the second year of their educational path, students are required to include optional courses designed to further explore and complete the specific topics of the individual curricula, for a total of 8 ECTS. The course catalogue of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering envisage activation of numerous courses termed ‘optional’ which serve to complete the elective course ECTS.

It is also possible to attend courses not from the School, provided either by Politecnico (in any campus) or by other Milan Universities with which the School has an agreement (all information will be available on the Web site).

 The student can choose two optional courses, or an optional course and a workshop (4 ECTS) among the workshops recognized by the School. The student can include only one workshop in his/her study plan. The international intensive programme MIAW-Milan International Architecture Workshop is considered a workshop; therefore, it must be combined with an optional course. There are two types of workshop activities:

- Workshops that can provide credits as optional activity, up to 4 ECTS, or as extra activity;

- "Traineeship Workshops", which can provide credits as Internship activities (6 ECTS).

In relation to graduation exam dates, the workshops completed at least one month before the graduation exam date, chosen by the student, will provide credits for academic career purposes.

It will not be possible that a workshop, carried out during the laurea triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme within the laurea magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science), will provide credits, or, if the workshop has been carried out as an as extra activity during the Laurea triennale, request the related assignment of credits in the new Laurea magistrale career.

 

7.1 MIAW

The School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering provides, for students enrolled in the three-year Study Programme in Architectural Design and in Laurea Magistrale in Architecture, Architecture - Architecture of Buildings, Architecture - Architectural Design, an intensive international programme: MIAW-Milan International Architecture Workshop.

This activity offers an international design forum for professors and students but it is also an informal meeting point to talk about issues and ambitions of sharing on the education topic.

The MIAW 2020 will take place in Milan, at Leonardo Campus, from 13 to 24 January 2020.

 

7.1.1 MIAW Attendance and Registration

During Study Plan compilation, students may choose between the various international Professors, expressing their section preferences, and will be allocated places according to merit based on the weighted average of examinations taken before the date shown on the School website.

The number of places for students enrolled on the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes, the three-year Laurea Triennele (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) Programme and the Erasmus student will be fixed yearly and published on the School website. If the planned number is not reached, any available places may be assigned.

Any students not admitted will automatically be issued a generic workshop code (see specifications relating to workshops), which may be changed during the half-year Study Plan change period.

MIAW involves a final assessment and, on completion of lectures, students must register for a dedicated examination date in order to obtain the score in the career.

Credits recorded in this way will substitute 4 ECTS from the student’s elective activities.

After allocation, it will not be possible to delete the course from the Study Plan or replace it with another course, but it may be included as extra the following academic year.

Students enrolled on the first yearof the Programme may only bring the MIAW activity forward if they have entered all the first-year courses.

 

8     Traineeship

Students enrolled on the second year of the Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors Programme, in the 2017/18 academic year, may bring their traineeship forward by submitting an application, exclusively during the Study Plan submission and change periods.

 

The School cooperates with professional associations, public administrations, local authorities and companies to organise external traineeship activities in order to ensure that students have the opportunity to earn the credits required by the educational system.

In addition, students may carry out a Practical Activity (traineeship) within the Departments of the Politecnico di Milano.

The rules on traineeship duration will be established by the Programmes, in accordance with the directives of the School. 9     Examinations

9.1      Procedures

The uniformity of procedures for checking of learning across all sections of the same course and planning of these procedures is ensured through appropriate forms of coordination, in line with the directives of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme.

At the start of the academic year, each Professor will communicate the procedures for checking of learning, the content of the examination and the assessment criteria.

For each course (individual courses and studios) there are three exam sessions. Each exam session involves one or more exam session dates as established by the School’s academic calendar.

Students may only participate in the exam sessions if duly registered, using the dedicated ‘online services’ function, for the examination date. Failure to register makes it absolutely impossible to take the test and record a score in the career.

Graduating students must observe the specific deadlines established by the academic calendar in order to permit completion, within the established deadlines, of the procedures for registration for the degree exam session.

10 Final Work and Degree Thesis

The Laurea Magistrale Study Programme ends with the degree examination, where the final work is presented and discussed (the graduation work can be done individually or in groups according to the rules established by the Additional Regulations for final test of the Laurea Magistrale Study Programme in Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors).

The Graduation Work selects and develops a discipline topic consistent with didactic content of the CdS and explicitly outlines and analyses the analytical, critical and design abilities gained by the graduating student during the whole study programme, and it can be a theoretical, document, experimental project.

The Final work is developed in continuity with the Final Thesis Studio (by identifying a field of study starting from the work done in the studio and developing it under the guidance of a professor as Supervisor, or, independently, by identifying immediately a Supervisor among the professor of the School, that must provide his/her approval to the content of the topic of the final work.

If you choose this alternative, you will not have to attend the Final Thesis Studio (12 CFU). In place of it, you will have to put in the study plan 8 CFU of elective courses chosen from the degree programme list, and one elective course of 4 CFU selected from the specific following list:

The students who choose the independent option will not insert the Final Thesis Studio in the Study Plan but will submit an application form (until the deadline of the study plan presentation for the 2° year students, on 6 September 2019) using the following link: http://www.auic.polimi.it/en/contact-us/contacts-schools-offices/ssob-support-services-office-for-master-msc-students/ (PETITIONS section).

Anyway, the development of the Thesis requires a further task (10 CFU) in addition to the Final Thesis Studio (12 CFU) or the independent option aforementioned (8+4 CFU).

  

The project graduation work consists of an original proposal that contains at least one descriptive relation, graphic works, and models (analogue and/or digital) in number and type to fully show the project (according to the Additional Regulations for final test of the Master Degree Study Programme in Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors). The theoretical, document or experimental graduation work must be characterized by an original element of analysis, evaluation and critique, by an appropriate bibliographic study and it can be presented through the help of graphic and iconographic works.
