7.1 Programme requirements

To obtain The Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering for Risk Mitigation, one is required to acquire 180 ECTS credits. The courses included in the didactic programme provide a sound basis in disciplines concerning structures and constructions (and their interface with the environment), as well as in disciplines related to the study of hydrogeological risk mitigation as it is an important aspect of the assessment of natural hazards. During the first three semesters of the course, the students will be introduced to the basic knowledge in terms of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Information Technology as well as more in-depth study of typical civil engineering subjects such as: Analytical Mechanics, Construction Sciences, GIS, and Geostatistics. The students will be further introduced to subjects necessary to complete one's civil engineering training with an in-depth knowledge in: Hydraulics, Applied Geology, Geotechnics, Structural Design, Hydrology, Hydraulic Structures, Tools for Analysis of Vulnerability, Risk, and Resilience.
There will be the opportunity to follow a workshop course - students will experience lectures followed by independent work organized in groups. Each group will be assigned with a specific argument to work on and will present the outcomes to their teachers and peers at the end of the course. The topics will include techniques for monitoring hydrogeological instabilities as well as infrastructures. In addition, there will be the possibility to follow a problem-solving course, during which students will be required to contribute to the analysis of existing case studies characterized by hydrogeological or infrastructure issues. The course will be held under the recognition of and in cooperation with territorial bodies as well as professional organizations working on the proposed topics. At the end of the teaching activities, the students will be required to compose a report for the final evaluation. The described course structure will provide graduates with both the typical professional skills of Civil Engineers and an enhanced interdisciplinary background, which in turn, favours a larger flexibility for their future professional life. Moreover, considering that the curriculum is common for the first two years, students may make a more conscious choice for the course of their future studies.
