2. General presentation of the study programme

Development of Life Sciences and the contribution of Bioengineering

Many of the most significant areas of scientific and technological development in the new century concern medical and biological sciences, with particular reference to health, nutritional and environmental problems, and rapid advances in the areas of gene therapy and biotechnologies. These topics require quality and innovation in teaching, research and support to company development.

Biomedical Engineering applies engineering methodologies and technologies to describe, understand and solve problems in the medical-biological field, via a close intersecting cooperation among engineers, biophysicists, medical doctors and biologists.

The contribution of Biomedical Engineering (Bioengineering) to the scientific and technological progress in this area is ever more important.

The study of:

  • living systems
  • the interaction with the environment
  • drug development
  • tissues, prostheses and artificial organs engineering
  • biomedical equipment and instrumentation
  • biomedical signals and images
  • ICT applications

constitutes an essential contribution to this progress and stimulates huge investments and employment opportunities.

Biomedical engineers are leading players in the introduction of new technologies and development of innovative methods and products by creating:

  • increased knowledge of the operation of biological systems both in the healthy and pathological conditions;
  • development of new devices, equipment, procedures and systems for prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation;
  • conception and development of new prostheses, artificial organs, life support systems, aids and prostheses for the disabled;
  • study and research of advanced and innovative materials, of cellular behaviour for reconstruction and remodelling of biological organs and tissues;
  • exploration of new, advanced technological developments in bio-and nano-technologies;
  • identification of structures and services for the management of health systems, mostly from the technological and organisational point of view;
  • definition of most correct and safe usage of methodologies and technologies in the health system;
  • cost reduction via the optimal usage of resources according to real needs.

Development of the teaching programme in the Biomedical Engineering field at Politecnico di Milano

Politecnico di Milano has run single courses in Biomedical Engineering since the end of the 60’s. In the late 70’s, this experience has generated two Bioengineering Tracks framed both in the Electronic and Mechanical Engineering programmes. In 1996, these tracks merged in the first five-year Master of Science (MS) Programme in Biomedical Engineering in Italy. The PhD programme in Bioengineering was established in 1983. 

The current Biomedical Engineering Programme was initiated in the academic year 2000-01 pursuant to the Ministerial Decree 509/99. It was later modified according to the Ministerial Decree 270/04, and is divided into three subsequent levels:

  • 3-year Bachelor of Science;
  • 2-year Master of Science;
  • 3-year Ph.D.

 

Teaching Regulations of the Programme

The teaching load is expressed in credits (CFU or ECTS: European Credit Transfer System). One ECTS is equivalent to 25 hours of average workload done by the student (e.g. approx. 8 hours of room lectures with corresponding individual study and exam preparation). Approximately 1500 hours of work per year are equivalent to 60 ECTS.

The Programme in Biomedical Engineering is designed to meet the following general goals:

Bachelor of Science (BS)

- to design a balanced Bachelor Programme in basic engineering and biomedical engineering;

- to meet the requirements either of the Information Engineering Class (class L8) or the Industrial Engineering Class (class L9) degrees, to allow the choice of the degrees to qualify in;

- to provide adequate knowledge about the biomedical engineering profession by means of either Internships at Companies, Hospitals etc., or a Final Project in the third year.

Master of Science (MS)

- to allow the choice among suggested curricula related to the fundamental disciplines of biomedical engineering, also enabling individual choices of specific courses by the student;

- to focus the completion of a methodological training with laboratory activities in the chosen areas;

- to allow a sound and autonomous development of a final thesis work, under the guidance of a supervisor.


3. Learning objectives

The main goal of the Bachelor of Science Course is to provide the student with a solid backgroundin engineering methodologies and technologies applied to the medical/biological field, with particular reference to the analytical description, simulation and analyses of systems and signals of medical-biological interest, to the study of biomaterials, devices and instrumentation  for diagnosis, therapy, substitution of organs and rehabilitation, to the knowledge of patient management, support structures, IT systems and the relevant ethical criteria.

Specific goals of the Master of Science Programme in Biomedica Engineering are:

  • to allow the choice among a number of well-characterised tracks concerning the fundamental disciplines at the same time offering the students the possibility to choose different kind of self composed traks;
  • to facilitate completion of a methodological preparation with laboratory activity in the chosen specialised areas;
  • to encourage the possibility to make broad and numerous autonomous decisions according to one's own  educational programme in coherence with the chosen track;
  • to allow the autonomous development of a sound final thesis work under the giudance of a supervisor (see Par. 7.5 - Graduation Exam).

Graduates at the Master of Science Programme in Biomedica Engineering will:

  • possess in-depth knowledge of theoretical-scientific aspects of general engineering, and specifically of biomedical engineering to identify, formulate and resolve, also in an innovative fashion, complex problems or those which require an interdisciplinary approach;
  • be able to conceive, track, design and manage complex and/or innovative systems, processes and services;
  • have context knowledge and cross-sectional ability;
  • have knowledge in the field of company organisation (business culture) and professional ethics.

The professional figure arising from an in-depth study of instrumentation (systems for measurement of bioelectrical energy and morphological and functional bio-images, therapeutic systems, etc) finds a place in the clinical-hospital sphere for management of devices and technological equipment in general. A professional figure in industry in technical or technical-commercial positions requires, on the other hand, in-depth knowledge of biomedical instrumentation and devices from the design point of view. Skills for determining and evaluating the optimal aid or prosthesis (orthopaedic, cardiac, etc.) are acquired by studying in more detail rehabilitation techniques and methodologies. Also the possibility to become free lances or consultant will be possible.

In order to allow a deeper knowledge of the mechanical approach and methodologies, a specific Double Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering has been issued starting from academic year 2016-17. Admission will be on a closed number basis. Both the Master Degree Titles will be awarded upon the attendance of a three years specific track.


4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications


The Master of Science programme in Biomedical Engineering lasts two years, for a total of 120 ECTS credits. Teaching languages are Italian or English. 

A total of five Tracks are run as specified below. 

  • Biomechanics and Biomaterials (BBB)
  • Engineering for Cells, Tissues and Biotechnologies (BCT)
  • Clinical Engineering (BIC)
  • Information Bioengineering (BIF)
  • Electronic Technologies (BTE)

The courses belonging to each track are taught either in Italian or in English language. However, the students will be allowed choosing all the courses to be attended taught in the preferred language (Italian or English). This choice will imply the filling in of a self proposed study plan which will be evaluated by an ad-hoc Commission that can suggest some modifications to ensure the cultural integrity of the educational project.

Each one of the proposed tracks is related to specific professional profiles:

Biomechanics and Biomaterials (BBB)

  • Biomedical Engineer involved in R&D, design, production, technical assistance, customisation and maintenance of biomechanical equipment, life support systems, prostheses and aids.
  • Biomedical Engineer expert in the field of mechanics, thermo-fluid dynamics, and materials science methods, with reference to the bio-compatibility, the effectiveness of devices, the interface with biological systems and its modelling.
  • Biomedical Engineer working in manufacturing companies and/or at suppliers of devices and prostheses, in hospitals and in various industrial and commercial environments, as well as a free lancer.

In order to allow a deeper knowledge of the mechanical approach and methodologies, a specific Double Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering has been issued starting from academic year 2016-17. Admission will be on a closed number basis. Both the Master Degree Titles will be awarded upon the attendance of a three years specific track.

Engineering for Cells, Tissues and Biotechnologies (BCT) 

  • Biomedical Engineer applying engineering methods in the biological and biotechnological field, also in R&D in the biological, pharmaceutical or industrial field.
  • Biomedical Engineer involved in micro-nano-technologies, molecular biomechanics, micro-fluid dynamics, methods of analysis of data for genomic, proteomic, molecular biology, cellular systems, biotechnologies and bioartificial tissue applications.
  • Biomedical Engineer working at manufacturers and/or suppliers of instrumentation for biotechnologies and engineered biological products, in pharmaceutical companies, in cellular and tissue engineering laboratories, in companies operating in bio-artificial and bio-mimetic spheres, as well as a free lancer.

Clinical Engineering (BIC)

  • Biomedical Engineer who applies engineering methods to the clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitation, and prevention fields and deepens the knowledge about the biological systems and their modelling, with important fallouts in clinical-medical environment.
  • Biomedical Engineer working in companies producing and/or distributing medical devices, instrumentation and technologies for health and wellness, manager of biomedical equipment and technologies in public or private hospitals, in practice offering professional services in the health sector, as well as a free lancer.
  • Biomedical Engineer involved in the regulations & standards field, management of technologies and instrumentation and their impact on healthcare, implants and infrastructures as well as information systems in hospitals. 
Information Bioengineering (BIF)
  • Biomedical Engineer combining high level education in Biomedical Engineering with methodological skills taken from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field, involved in the Research and Development of methods, tools and applications dealing with processing, analysis and management of data in Healthcare
  • Expert Bioengineer in the management of Information systems and networks for Healthcare organizations, support to clinical decisions, digital healthcare, healthcare system organization, evaluation of efficacy and efficiency of devices and information systems, use of standards to ensure information protection and inter-operability, telemedicine, service quality assessment in Healthcare
  • Expert Bioengineer inside companies producing and/or providing instrumentation and devices, dealing with development, management and supply support of care devices with strong ICT components; Engineer involved in processes of data integration in distributed systems, interface design and customization, design and management of algorithms and systems for processing and integration of biomedical data, bio-inspired intelligent systems.

Electronic Technologies (BTE)

  • Biomedical Engineer involved in R&D, design, assistance, customisation and maintenance of electro-medical equipment and biomedical, hospital, and home-automation instrumentation.
  • Biomedical Engineer involved in electronic and information methods concerning sensors, biosensors, micro-technologies, measurement chains, interfacing with biological systems and modelling.
  • Biomedical Engineer working at instrumentation manufacturers or suppliers, health institutions and at various industrial and commercial environments.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)


The most 'natural' progression is the PhD in Biomedical Engineering. At Politecnico di Milano, the PhD in Bioengineering refers to two Departments: the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering and the Department of Electronics, Informatics and Bioengineering. 5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Law 270/04) belongs to LM/21 Class (Biomedical Engineering) which enables the participation to the State examination for the professional qualification in Section A of the Engineers Register in the Industrial Engineering and in the Information Engineering areas.
For the Master of Science there are no legal constraints on the minimum number of credits per area, because the first degree level is totally separate from the second level.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

Typical professional environments are those of technology innovation and development, of advanced design, of tracking and programming, of complex systems management, both as a self-employed professional and in industrial and commercial companies, in public and private health services and in public administration. Master of Science graduates will be able to interact with health professionals in diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation applications and to work in industries in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors manufacturing and supplying equipment and materials for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation in public and private hospitals, service companies for remote medicine and management of medical devices and equipment, in specialised clinical laboratories,.

Some typical careers the Programme prepares the students are:

  • product management engineer in the biomedical sector;

  • clinical engineer, after specific professional training, with possible coordination role;

Telephone surveys in recent years, involving Master of Science graduates with at least 3 years experience, indicate a constant level of satisfaction exceeding 90%. Master of Science graduates finding employment in the biomedical field account for 80% in the following sectors: clinical engineering, hospital services, electromedical devices, pharmaceutical industry, research institutes and universities.

Profile with a strong training in engineering methodologies and technologies applied to:

The master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Educational System 270/04) is part of the LM/21 Class (Biomedical Engineering) which allows to take the State Professional Examination for professional qualification in Section A of the Engineers Register either in the Sector of "Information Engineering" or "Industrial Engineering".

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification


The admission to the Master of Science degree undergoes an evaluation process aimed to determine the eligibility of the applicant. Such process, in compliance to the existing regulation (D.M. 22/10/2004 n. 270 art. 6 par. 2 and D.M. 16/3/2007, art.6 par. 1), is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.

The final decision about the admission to the Master of Science degree shall be taken by an Evaluation Commission appointed by the Programme Council, according to the academic career of the applicant. The Commission may take into account a valid documentation showing clear exceptional conditions, justifying the non-compliance of the below-mentioned criteria and showing that the student has an adequate background. This documentation shall be attached to the admission application.

If the applicant is admitted, possible compulsory additional subjects shall be communicated together with the admission and before enrolment, in order to provide students with the necessary information for a transparent and rational choice.

Requirements concerning the English language proficiency levels are presented in Paragraph 7.4.


6.1.1 Application for admission


A Bachelor of Science Degree (Laurea) is required for the evaluation of the career, as well as an higher degree (MSc, Laurea Magistrale). The evaluation can be carried out also for students enrolled in Politecnico di Milano BSc, if they are candidates in the next Graduation session, and for students enrolled in BSc of other Italian Universities, if they shall graduate before enrolling to the MSc.

Admission requirements concerning the academic career considered by the Commission are as follows:

  1. graduation at the Bachelor of Science no later than 31 March of the sixth year after the first enrolment (for example if the first enrolment an Italian University was in September 2012, the degree should be obtained before March 31, 2018); such requirement does not apply for candidates possessing a MSc degree;
  2. average graduation mark not below the “adjusted” admission threshold (please see Paragraph 6.1.1.2);
  3. certification of the English language proficiency (please see Paragraph 7.4);
  4. possession of educational prerequisites not requiring integration.

Should even one of the requirements listed at either point 1) or 2) of the above list be not satisfied, the Commission will not admit the applicant to the Master of Science degree course, unless documentation testifying a proven exceptional case is presented. Should any of the requirements listed at either point 3) or 4) of the above list be not satisfied, the applicant will be accepted to the Master of Science degree course for enrolment, only after having met these requirements (i.e. by demonstrating his/her proficiency in English and/or obtaining the necessary prerequisites identified and communicated by the Commission).


6.1.1.1 Numbers of years for achieving the Bachelor


The number of years for achieving the Bachelor of Science, named as “N”, is the half of the number of semesters occurred from the year of first enrolment in any University to the achievement of the BSc Graduation (semesters end at March 31st or October 31st).

As an example, N can assume the following values:

  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2014 and will earn their BSc degree by September 2017 (6 semesters): N = 3
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2014 and will earn their BSc degree by March 2018 (7 semesters): N = 3,5
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2013 and will earn their BSc degree by September 2017 (8 semesters): N = 4
  • For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2013 and will earn their BSc degree by March 2018 (9 semesters): N = 4,5

 To be admitted at the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering, N value must be lower than/equal to 6.


6.1.1.2 "Adjusted" admission threshold for candidates with a BSC issued by Politecnico di Milano


Admission to the Master of Science degree course requires that the average marks obtained in the examinations of the Bachelor Programme, weighted on the credits relevant to each course, be higher than a "adjusted" value. 

In the case of candidates with a BSc issued by Politecnico di Milano, the “adjusted” threshold is calculated as follows:

SC = S + k * (min (M,N)-3)

Starting from the 2018-2019 academic year, the above "Adjusted" admission thresholds and the coefficients will be modified as follows:

"Adjusted" admission threshold for candidates with BSc degree issued by other Italian Universities


For Candidates with a Bachelor of Science issued by any other Italian University than Politecnico di Milano, the “adjusted” threshold is compared to the BSc Graduation mark and, therefore, it is expressed with a maximum of 110 points.

Starting from academic year 2018-2019, the above "Adjusted" admission thresholds and the coefficients will be:

6.1.1.3 English Proficiency

6.1.1.4 Admission without compulsory prerequisites


To be admitted to the MSc in Biomedical Engineering, the Bachelor of Science degree programme has to be evaluated as being “consistent” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree course. The Evaluation Commission verifies this requirement, also ascertaining the need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.

6.2 Requested knowledge

In order to be admitted to the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering, applicants must have acquired a knowledge base that is consistent with the study programme offered in the degree course. The evaluation of the adequacy of this knowledge base uses as a reference framework the programme of the Bachelor of Science degree course in Biomedical Engineering, comprising Numerical Analysis (5 ECTS credits)

Considering the extent and variety of the origin of graduates applying for admission onto the Master of Science, admission conditions can be identified in advance solely for the majority of cases, particularly graduates from the three-year engineering Programmes. For the other applicants, an ad hoc examination will be necessary, aimed at guaranteeing that only candidates with requisites that are “coherent” with the Degree programme are admitted, which can be acquired via integrations or supplement constraints.

In particular:

  • for BSc graduates from any Italian Universities, the study record of the candidate will be evaluated "in coherence" with the educational programme of the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering if in these records, or in any case prior to application for enrolment, at least 45 base credits and 80 characterising credits in the relevant areas of the Bachelor of Science L-8 Class "Information Engineering" or L9 Class "Industrial Engineering" have been acquired. The list of Scientific Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) belonging to the “base” or “characterising” areas can be found on the website: http://www.cun.it/media/77611/lauree_triennali.pdf .
  • for BSc graduates from foreign Universities or for graduates not belonging to the engineering areas, academic requisites and “coherence” with the Degree programme will be checked by examining the candidates’ previous study records. The possible equivalents amongst modules taken with successful results and those of the SSDs of Engineering will be established by the Evaluation Commission, on the basis of an in-depth assessment of the official module programmes. The decision of the Commission is unappealable. 

Any track integrations that the Evaluation Commission indicates to the candidates must have been achieved before proceeding with the enrolment application to the Master of Science degree. Please see Paragraph 6.2.1 for the relevant information.

Based on the above, additional admission requirements to the ones listed in paragraph 6.1. and 6.2 pertaining to candidates from different universities, are given in the following paragraphs.


6.2.1 Admission of Biomedical Engineering BSc graduates from Politecnico di Milano


No compulsory courses or integrations are required for these graduates, privided that Numerical Analysis (5 ECTS) module has been taken at the BSc programme, either in the frame of the 180 ECTS or as extra ECTS. In case the BSc graduates have taken the Internship module instead of Numerical Analysis, this module will have to be taken as a compulsory integration by single course attendance, prior to being enrolled at the MSc. 


6.2.2 Other Bachelor of Science graduates: Biomedical Engineering graduates from any other University, other Engineering subjects, other Disciplines


The Master of Science Admission Commission will evaluate prerequisites with the following procedures, taking into account any equivalences with the requested subject areas.

  • A) Prerequisites concerning the engineering disciplines specific to a track

    In order to ensure the possibility to successfully attend a specific track, the presence in the BSc records of courses belonging to the SSDs listed in the table below, or equivalent in terms of the minimum number of indicated of CFUs, will be verified. Should these requisites be not satisfied, acquisition of a larger or equal number of CFUs, compared to the minimum indicated, by attending individual courses at the Politecnico di Milano is required. In the table, as a mere suggestion, the courses offered in the Degree Programme in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano are listed, which satisfy the criteria of number of CFUs and equivalences required.

    No compulsory requirements are issued about the subjects listed in Table B.1. However, in order to facilitate the understanding of the subjects taught at the MSc Degree, the graduates from other disciplines than Biomedial Engineering are suggested to fill possible gaps autonomously.

6.2.3 Procedures for the application of prerequisites


An applicant who has been assigned any prerequisites may attend “Individual Courses”, in the period before the enrolment to the Master of Science. The following three opportunities exist:

  • B1) earn credits related to the additional compulsory modules, as requested by the Evaluation Commission for the Master of Science. These credits shall be not accounted within the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree.
  • B2) earn credits during the BSc, by passing courses offered the Master of Science level, by means of a self-proposed study plan; these credits will be accepted as part of the 120 credits necessary for the Master of Science degree;
  • B3) earn the ‘right to attend’ to courses at the Master of Science level. The same as B2) even if the exam was not passed.

Furthermore, the following restrictions are in force:

  1. the total amount of credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including credits of compulsory prerequisites (B1).
  2. the total amount of credits (by passing exams or only attending courses) that can be accounted among the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree (B2+B3) cannot exceed 32. Credits in excess of 32 could be only accepted as ‘extra-limit exams’.

Should an applicant not pass the exams assigned as compulsory prerequisites within 15 months from the assignment by the Commission, he or she forfeits his/her right to admission totally and completely.

6.3 Deadlines for admission and number of places available

At Politecnico di Milano, admission to the Master of Science degree is possible either in the first or the second term.

To be admitted it is necessary to ask for the evaluation of the Bachelor educational curriculum, through a specific procedure available on the website: www.webpoliself.polimi.it. The evaluation process is required as mere holding of a Bachelor Degree can be not enough for being admitted.

NOTE: The career evaluation request must be submitted within the established time limits for all candidates (including students that got their BSc in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano).

Positive evaluation of the application is only valid for the term in which it was made.

NOTE for applicants to Clinical Engineering - Ingegneria Clinica (BIC)

To ensure students attending the BIC track to be enrolled in training or internship programmes, this track has closed-number admission (maximum 25 students with a maximum of 15 students enrolled at the first semester and a maximum of 10 students at the second semester).

Admission is thus made upon a ranking based on the "adjusted" average (MC) defined as follows:

MC = weighted average of the scores of the Bachelor exams - 0,5*(N-3)

where N is calculated as reported at paragraph 6.1.1.1.

Ranking will be defined based on the unquestionable judgement of the MSc admission Committee. As a transient rule, only BSc graduates in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano will be allow to present application to this track.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

Structure of the Teaching Regulations

 

  • The Teaching Regulations propose well-structured tracks in basic and characterising disciplines in order to allow composition of suggested study tracks which satisfy the necessary requirements and at the same time allow freedom of choice concerning specialist studies in various sectors. The following groups are thus identified in the corresponding tables:
  • (AFF) similar or supplementary - courses with 12 ECTS in the 1st year aimed at consolidating general preparation specifically for each track in the areas of mathematics, applied mathematics, molecular biology and biotechnologies;
  • (BASIC) basic bioengineering - 30 ECTS in the 1st year; for each track courses of this type, in preparation for more advanced training in the 2nd year, are indicated; amongst the possible choices is a highly recommended course (the only one in the first semester) characterising the track;
  • (MOD) bioengineering of physiological systems and other 5 SECTORS in the fields of bio-fluid dynamics, biomechanics and clinical applications - 10 ECTS in the 1st year - provide a bioengineering approach to the main physiological systems and a foundation for more advanced studies;
  • (LAB) bioengineering laboratories - 5 ECTS courses in the 2nd year specific to the chosen track (programmed numbers, see notes); an additional lab. is advisable and will be assigned if available according to preferences expressed by the student;
  • (SPEC) specialist bioengineering - 20 ECTS in the 2nd year to complete the chosen track and touch upon similar disciplines; optional disciplines - 10 ECTS in the 1st year and 10 ECTS credits in the 2nd year:
  • (INGLM) courses in other Engineering sectors useful as a foundation for biomedical applications;
  • (GES) amongst the options, insertion of Health Management (5 ECTS) is recommended for Clinical Engineering and Business Management (5 ECTS) for other tracks
  • (MED) courses offered by the School of Medicine and Surgery of the  Università degli Studi di Milano (closed number, see notes).

The Student is strongly encouraged to choose a well characterized study Program Track which brings to choose a Thesis suitably focused on the chosen educational programme. To this purpose the Student may interact with various Committees of the CCS (or even with single CCS teachers) who can better address or advice him/her on the basis of the expressed needs and expectations.

 Notes:

LAB 

Due to organisational reasons the Lab Courses can accept a limited number of participants. Students have to apply to the chosen Lab Course by the established deadline. Application is made by filling an on-line form, which is published on the Biomedical Engineering Programme website http://www.ccsbio.polimi.it where also admission criteria and rules can be found. Admission ranking is published before the deadline for the study plan presentation. The student can refuse the Lab Course he/she has been enrolled in by the terms indicated in the admission rules document. After this deadline the student will have to put the assigned Lab Course into his/her study plan.

MED

Courses provided by the School of Medicine of the University in Milano. It is necessary to get information on the modalities and the period the Course is run (the semester reported into the table is only indicative). Biomedical Engineering Students admittance is made on a closed number base. It is necessary to contact the Secretary Office of the Biomedical Engineering Course for being admitted to the specific application lists.

POLI 

Any Course run at the Bachelor or the Master Programmes at Politecnico di Milano. Such an option requires the filling in of an autonomous Programme. Please verify the course is active and the Campus the course is run.

7.2 Mode of study

This Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities


Starting from academic year 2018/19, Lab Courses will adopt innovative teaching modalities (flipped/blended classrooms). To stimulate active learning, capacity for structuring thought and knowledge, and debate among colleagues, students will be divided into groups; each group will be given a specific subject to be deepened in the context of the activities which are being developed. A public presentation of the analysed subject will be given in front of the classroom and plenary discussed.

In the next pages the five pre-approved study plans (Tracks) . for the Master Course are described.

Based on the wide educational offer self-proposed study plans will be accepted only in the presence of strong motivations.

Possible derogation can be given to:

  • Students who chose to attend only courses taught in one language (Italian or English);
  • Students whose study plan comprises compulsory extra courses defined by the admission Committee;
  • Students who are enrolled in an International exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus programme).

Compulsory scheduling of the courses is not present however, students can be advised about the sequence of courses to be chosen.

The students should verify that no overlapping in the timetable of the chosen courses is present. The timetable committee does its best to avoid this possibility however, the wide variety of the choices makes it impossible to avoid all the possible overlapping.

Note on Mutual exclusions: It is forbidden to introduce in the study plan Courses already taken at the Bachelor Degree Programme.

7.3.1 Recommended courses precedences


Attendance to a course of the second year (SPEC, LAB) needs to possess specific education given by courses offered at the first year BASE, MOD,AFF). No compulsory rules exist however, the student has to get information about necessary pre-requisites allowing proper understanding of the subjects taught in a more advanced course. In case the student should decide not to follow this suggestion he/she has to ask the Professor of the advanced course about the necessity and the modality to self-integrate education on the specific subject.

7.4 Foreign language

Requirements about the English Language knowledge are the same for alle the Programmes of Politecnico di Milano.

7.5 Degree examination

The general rules for the graduation exam are common to all the Programmes belonging to the School of Industrial and Information Engineering. Each Study Programme Council has defined further specific rules. The final thesis is chosen by the student and will be framed in the chosen subject area. 

The subjects of the thesis project are related to basic or applied research activities that are developed in the laboratories with wich the student come in contact either by educational activities or by direct contact with the faculty members.

The thesis can involve also collaborations with companies, or external institutions or laboratories.

The student has to demonstrate to be able to autonomously develop the assigned subject related to engineering applied to medicine either involving design competences or research activities. The student's educational maturity should allow proposing innovative solutions wich can be valid also in a professional context. The Supervisor of the thesis surveys the whole work over time by proposing the subjects to be analysed and evaluating the solutions proposed by the student.

Based on the complexity of the work the Supervisor can ask for a Discussant who will evaluate the thesis. The Discussant is appointed by the Degree Committee among those proposed by the Supervisor.

The defence of the thesis in front of the Degree Committee, the Supervisor (or a Co-Supervisor, appointed by the Supervisor) and the possible Discussant is public. The candidate has to demonstrate adequate knowledge of the specific subjects dealt with in the thesis work and presentation efficacy, underlying the original aspects of the proposed solutions and of the obtained results.

9. Faculty

The names of professors for each Course, together with their subject, will be available on the degree programme starting from the month of September.
The degree programme is annually published on the website of Politecnico di Milano.

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

The teaching activities are settled at the Campus Leonardo, in Città Studi (University City) area in Milano.

The Secretary office of the Biomedical Engineering Programme is located at the ground floor of building 20, Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, opening hours: 9:00 - 12:00 from Monday to Friday.


11. International context

The Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering provides an excellent experience at an international level merging together traditional engineering foundation skills with medical, clinical, biological and pharmaceutical skills. A wide number of teaching exchange programmes with highly qualified institutions in EU and non-EU countries is available. In addition to these actions, in the frame of scientific collaborations with highly ranked institutions it is possible to develop co-tutored Master thesis which imply stays abroad.

12. Internationalization

International exchange and mobility of students abroad are highly incentivated during the Master Course in Biomedical Engineering.

Applications to exchange projects with foreign countries are evaluated and approved by the relevant Committee of the Programme Council. 13. Quantitative data
