2. General presentation of the study programmeThe complexity of modern societies has produced relevant effects with respect to risks. On the one hand societies are experiencing new and emerging threats that are also the result of modernization, on the other they are more exposed and vulnerable to hazards as a result of urbanization and larger dependence from infrastructures. Furthermore, societies are increasingly calling for safety and protection, not only as a consequence of growing fears but also because safety is considered a public good to be guaranteed to citizens. Such demand for risk mitigation can be recognised across both developing and developed countries, though in different forms.
Modern crises, new threats and "old" hazards that hit built environments require new abilities and competences. The rule of thumb is clearly not enough to accompany the whole process from impact to recovery and reconstruction and to open the floor for renovated ways to prevent risks in a sustainable way, both economically and ecologically.
Engineering solutions have always been seen as fundamental pillars of both structural and non structural mitigation. Following the traditional engineering expertise, this M.Sc. proposes innovative paths to deal with the complexities of today's risks.
First, civil engineering will be coupled with a systemic approach to risk assessment and management. The traditional focus on buildings and structural safety will be complemented by the analysis of the many uncertainties faced in hazardous environments. Second, information and communication technologies are proposed as fundamental tools to support Risk Management, in particular for handling emergencies. Third, social, juridical, economical aspects will be integrated into the more technical perspective, to enable future professionals to understand the wider context in which they will have to operate. The focus on integration has been embodied in an innovative didactical method that will address problems in comprehensive modular courses, with an interdisciplinary approach that requires the ability to work and exchange ideas with other experts to achieve an agreed solution for the problem at stake.
The Politecnico di Milano has significant experience to offer. It continuously promotes a large integrated research on Risk Management involving several departments, with researchers and professors from various fields who will teach in the M.Sc. It can count on an extended network of national and international universities and research centres with which projects financed by institutions as well as by private organizations have been developed or are currently under way.
3. Learning objectivesThe Master programme aims at educating civile engineers with an orientation to risk management. Such a characterization is sought along two different and complementary lines.
1) a specialization of the typical expertise of a civil engineer (structures and infrastructures, analysis of hydrogeologic and seismic processes, spatial planning) towards assessment and management of risks. Aspects to be deeply considered are risk assessment, the evaluation of structural resistance in extreme conditions, ensuring safety in emergency and, obviously, prevention and protection works.
2) Widening the tyical expertise of a civil engineer to embrace a variety of phenomena and tools that are more related to other disciplines, like management, analyses at large spatial scales, different risks (chemical-industrial, Na-Tech, enchained effects), as well as social, economic and financial aspects.
it is assumed that, in the field of risk mitigation, a big value will be brought by professionals able to approach problems quantitatively (as necessary for an engineer) but treasuring a transversal and multidisciplinary vision (appreciating the problem complexity and interacting with experts in different sectors).
To this aim, the programme is structured along two years as follows:
1st year: risk in civil engineering. A specialistic education in civil engineering is provided, with a focus onto hazard and vulnerability analyses.
2nd year: engineering tools for risk management. The starring actor is risk, while engineering is invoked as a tool for problem solution.
The first year is organized by discipline, as typical of engineering programmes. The second one, instead, is divided into thematic modules within which students are challenged to solve complex problems via appropriate technical tools. A student will choose a minimum of two modules. Constructing a study plan, a student may deal with a variety of risks (industrial, structural, hydrogeologic, seismic, ...) deepening several aspects of risk mitigation (hazard, exposure and vulnerability analysis, structural and non-structural mitigation, planning and emergency management). The approach is first technical, involving economic aspects, communication and social issues.
The programme is entirely taught in English, and is offered both to international and Italian students willing to study in an international context. The semester organization allows to spend a semester abroad, at partner institutions.
4. Organization of the study programme and further studies 4.1 Structure of the study programme and QualificationsGraduates have an advanced eductaion in several engineering disciplines, acquired during the first year. Choosing the modules for the second year, different paths can be built, two of which are considered most significant.
The first path is related to risk for structures and infrastructures, while the second is more oriented to hydrogeological risks.

5. Professional opportunities and work market5.1 Professional status of the degreeThis master programme is offered at the Politecnico di Milano, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. It is aimed at providing scientific and technical tools to assess and manage natural and technological risks. The proposed master programme is grounded in the engineering tradition (civil, environmental, chemical, electronic and information technology), offering fundamental and advanced tools for the management of a variety of natural and atrophic hazards. The Master of Science programme is aimed at providing knowledge and expertise in the field of structural and non structural measures for the mitigation of natural and anthropic hazards. The result of the educational programme is a professional that besides the typical skills of a Civil Engineer, is able to share and interface specific competences within a team of experts dealing with the complexity of environmental risks assessment and mitigation, as well as emergency management. Differently from what prescribed for junior engineers with a BSc degree in Civil Engineering, no restriction is given by the law as to the size and importance of the works. As an example, the high degree of specialisation allows engineers with a MSc degree to be involved in the design of hydroelectric power-plants, large span bridges and tunnels.

Profile in a work context
The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) study programme aims to provide knowledge and skills for critical analysis in the field of structural and non-structural countermeasures, for mitigation of natural and human risks. Graduate students, in addition to the traditional skills of a civil engineer, s/he is able to work with different experts in order to face the complexity of the risk assessment and mitigation process, as well as the emergency management.
The graduate student has an advanced knowledge in many engineering fields, obtained during the first year of the study programme. Through the choice of courses attended in the second year, s/he has the opportunity to undertake different careers, among which two of them are the most significant. A first career concerns an expert in the evaluation and mitigation of risks related to structures and infrastructures; this profile is built thanks to the courses in:

In the framework of the International Program of Politecnico di Milano, the Master of Science in Civil Engineering is offered to Italian and foreign students with a Bachelor (BSc), or equivalent, degree.
A limited number of Scholarships will be granted to support foreign students. The MSc is taught in English.

6.2 Requested knowledgeA School commission will evaluate the curriculum of applicant students, and will check if the credits of the candidate's BSc degree correspond to credits required to access the Master of Science in Italy.
Provided the requirements of point 6.1 are met, the typical curriculum of a BSc in Civil Engineering should guarantee access to the MSc without extra restrictions. However, based on the curriculum of each applicant, the School commission reserves the right to include in their study plan specific courses.

The thesis, which may be of theoretical, experimental, numerical or design must address the topic chosen in an original way. It must be submitted in the form of dissertation writing, must be countersigned by a rapporteur who is professor of the faculty of civil engineering, environmental and territorial integrity of the Politecnico of Milan and can be submitted to the court for a preliminary “controrelatore”, not necessarily on the faculty, and considered an expert on the subject under discussion in the thesis. 10. Infrastructures and laboratoriesLecco Campus
Courses will be taught at the Lecco Campus of the Politecnico di Milano, within the Schoolof Civil, Environmental and Territorial Engineering.
Studying in Lecco
Lecco Campus is characterized by a wide didactic offer throughout Politecnico di Milano and by the presence of research activity and technological transfer focused on issues that are characteristics of the local area.
Lecco, as a Regional Campus, is featured by a strong didactic and research presence in the following sectors:
- Civil engineering, with particular attention to civil building protection;
- Building engineering, with particular attention to Building Engineering-Architecture sector;
- Management, with particular attention to logistics;
- Mechanics, with particular attention to quality and eco-efficiency.
The didactic and research activities are currently carried out in the buildings of Via Marco d' Oggiono, Via Amendola, Corso Promessi Sposi and Campus Point, a prototypical research centre that - with its new eight labs - anticipates scientific, technological and research contents of the future campus, while planning the definitive location in the area of Via Ghislanzoni, the former hospital of Lecco .
Within a few years a new campus will gather all the didactic and research activities.
Lecco and its surroundings have a strong industrial background with a long tradition of international exchanges, furthermore the presence of foreign students attending the three Master of Science courses, taught completely in English at Lecco Campus, creates a multi-ethnic context that is an important and stimulating aspect of our campus.

The vocation of the Politecnico di Milano has always been beyond the borders of Italy.
