2. General presentation of the study programmeThe modern society needs clean and efficient technologies for the transformation of energy and it needs high performance materials for several applications including automotive, biomedical, electronic, environmental, aerospace, etc. We also require efficient methods for the production of food and we expect to live in a clean environment, characterized by a sustainable use of the natural resources. Whatever the solutions for these needs they involve – in a way or in another - chemical transformations. Therefore the modern society needs Chemical Engineering, whose principles are at the basis of all transformation processes of matter and energy.
A Chemical Engineer is able to provide cutting edge solutions to meet the needs of society. Using his knowledge about chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering he is able to describe the chemical and physical transformations, and to design processes from the molecular to the industrial scale.
The Chemical Engineering programme at Politecnico di Milano, structured on the Bachelor and the Master degrees, is not only focused on the chemical industry but instead is characterized by its wide-angle approach. In fact Chemical Engineering is involved in all manufacturing and processing technologies, and in the environmental protection as well. For this reason Chemical Engineering differs from other engineering degree programmes being Process Engineering in a broad sense, centered on the chemico-physical transformations of the materials. As examples of applications of Chemical Engineering we can recall the production of fuels from biomasses; the development of technologies for the removal/reutilization of carbon dioxide; the production of a chemical product from a series of reactants; the production of a component made of plastic material (from reactants to the polymer and then to the final product); the production of an electronic device; the treatment of a waste to reduce its pollution loading; the design of environmentally sustainable processes and many others.
The scale of these applications may range from the laboratory and the pilot plant to the large industrial production plants.
Therefore Chemical Engineers do not work only in chemical and petrochemical plants, but in all companies involving transformation processes such as in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, environmental or energy sector. Chemical Engineers also deals with issues related to environmental aspects and the sustainability of production, including effluent treatment technologies to reduce the concentration of pollutants.
In other words chemical engineer is a chemistry technologist, working in the transformation processes on all production scales, as opposed to the chemist or industrial chemist, who operates on smaller laboratory scales and in the field of chemical analysis methods.
3. Learning objectivesThe Master degree programme in Chemical Engineering (Laurea Magistrale) aims to form experts who can meet, manage and solve the technological challenges of modern society. The education of Chemical Engineers starts with the Bachelor degree, 1° level, and reaches its completeness with the Master Degree, 2° level. The Master degree programme in Chemical Engineering aims at giving the students a solid fundamental knowledge in the basic and engineering disciplines together with an unique approach to work.
Chemical Engineer summarizes every complex system through a sequence of simpler operations for which a solution can be found. Then any process or chemical plant consisting of many interconnected units is at first analyzed by focusing the attention on each unit and then on the interconnections between these units. A preliminary study of the process is carried out in which the characteristics of the desired product are determined, the sequence of steps necessary for the process are established and operating conditions of each step are investigated. At this point the Chemical Engineer is involved in the design phase of all the equipments involved in the process previously determined. After designing the process and the units, the activities involving the management and the control of the plants are also designed.
The training of the Chemical Engineer begins with the 1° level study course in which the solid preparation in the basic subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry), in the typical disciplines of engineering (electrotechnics, construction science, machines) and, of course, in the subjects of chemical engineering (principles of chemical engineering, chemical plants, industrial chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, etc.) is accomplished. During the Master's Degree, the figure of the Chemical Engineer is consolidated and completed with the acquisition of advanced mathematical tools, the refinement of engineering training in the broad sense and the achievement of advanced knowledge in the various sectors of Chemical Engineering (chemical plants, unit operations, industrial chemistry, environment and safety, chemical reactors, biotechnologies, etc.). Given the breadth of the educational offer, the student will be able to direct his/her own preparation in the sector that he/she considers most suitable to his/her interests and to his professional growth. In this context, the Master's Degree Thesis is a formative moment of considerable importance because the student will be able to develop in first person a working method and technical-scientific skills in the most innovative and cutting-edge areas of scientific research. The graduate in Chemical Engineering is, therefore, an extremely flexible and transversal professional figure characterized by a strong basic scientific and technical-applicative preparation.
The Master's Degree Program adopts teaching methods that meet the Dublin descriptors adopted at the European level. The comprehension skills and the autonomy of judgment will be verified through written and oral exam tests and the drafting of personal or group papers. The ability to apply knowledge and understanding will be verified through the drafting of reports following participation in experimental laboratories and project activities included in the training path. Periodic presentations of the activities carried out for the verification of communication skills are scheduled. The ability to learn will eventually be verified during the individual activities planned for the preparation of the final exam.
At the end of the course of study the graduate will have to know how to manage methodological and technical tools to face, even from an innovative point of view, problems concerning the development of production processes, the management of processes for the production of goods and materials, the design of the equipment, the choice of materials and the management of the components in normal or aggressive working conditions, the residual life of the products.

6. Enrolment6.1 Access requirementsFirst cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification
The admission to the Master of Science degree undergoes an evaluation process aimed to determine the eligibility of the applicant. Such a process, in compliance with the existing regulation (D.M. 22/10/2004 n. 270 art. 6 par. 2 and D.M. 16/3/2007, art.6 par. 1), is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.
The final decision about the admission to the Master of Science degree shall be taken by an Evaluation Commission set up by the Board of Studies, according to the academic career of the applicant. The Commission may take into account valid documentation showing clear exceptional conditions, justifying the non-compliance of the below-mentioned criteria and showing that the student has an adequate background. Such documentation shall be attached to the admission application.
If the applicant is admitted, compulsory additional subjects shall be communicated together with the admission and before enrolment, in order to provide students with the necessary information for a transparent and rational choice.
Requirements concerning the English language proficiency levels are presented in Paragraph 7.4.
Application for admission
A Bachelor of Science Degree (Laurea) is required for the evaluation of the career, as well as a higher degree (MSc, Laurea Magistrale). The evaluation can be carried out under reserve also for students enrolled in Politecnico di Milano or other Universities BSc, if they are candidates in a Graduation session scheduled not later than 6 months, and not later than the deadline for the enrolment to the MSc program. The reserve is lifted when the BSc is earned. If the BSc is not earned before the deadline for the enrolment to the MSc program, the evaluation is lost and a new application for admission must be submitted.
Admission requirements concerning the academic career considered by the Commission are as follows:
for Politecnico di Milano Bachelor students, who comes from a BSc program in “Ingegneria Chimica”, at least 105 CFU must be gained with an average grade >= 25/30 before the end of the fall semester (primo semestre) of the second year and the Bachelor of Science Degree (Laurea) must be earned in 4 years maximum from the enrolment.
or
a) graduation at the Bachelor of Science no later than 31 October of the sixth year after the first enrolment (for example if the first enrolment an Italian University was in September 2013, the degree should be obtained before October 31, 2019); such requirement does not apply for candidates having a MSc;
b) average graduation mark not below the “adjusted” admission threshold (see later);
c) certification of the English language proficiency (see Paragraph 7.4);
d) further subjects and knowledge are not required (see Paragraph 6.2).
Candidates with a BSC in Chemical Engineering issued by Politecnico di Milano or by other Italian universities, who meet the requirements stated above, are automatically admitted to the Master of Science degree course; if the requirements stated at either point a) or b) of the above list are not satisfied, the Commission will not admit the applicant to the Master of Science degree course, unless documentation testifying a proven exceptional case can be presented.
If the requirements stated at either point c) or d) of the above list are not satisfied, the applicant will be accepted to the Master of Science degree course and enrolled, after having satisfied these conditions, by demonstrating his/her proficiency in English and/or obtaining the necessary prerequisites identified and communicated by the Commission.
For candidates with other BSC issued by Politecnico di Milano or by other universities, in addition to meeting the above requirements, admission is subject to examination by Evaluation Commission. For the students holding (or that will get) a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (L8; L9) awarded by Politecnico di Milano, the admission to the Master of Science degree will be granted without any compulsory prerequisite, provided that their average grade (weighted by the CFU of each exam) in the Bachelor of Science is >= 28/30.
Number of years for achieving the Bachelor
The number of years for achieving the Bachelor of Science, named as “N”, is the half of the number of semesters occurring from the year of first enrolment in any University to the achievement of the BSc Graduation (semesters end at April 30th or October 31st). For sake of clarification, N can assume the following values:
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2017 and will earn their BSc degree no later than October 2020 (6 semesters): N = 3
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2017 and will earn their BSc degree no later than March 2021 (7 semesters): N = 3.5
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2016 and will earn their BSc degree no later than October 2020 (8 semesters): N = 4
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2016 and will earn their BSc degree no later than March 2021 (9 semesters): N = 4.5
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2015 and will earn their BSc degree no later than October 2020 (10 semesters): N = 5
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2015 and will earn their BSc degree no later than March 2021 (11 semesters): N = 5.5
• For students who enrolled at the Bachelor of Science in September 2014 and will earn their BSc degree no later than October 2020 (12 semesters): N = 6
For the admission to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering N must be equal or less than 6.
"Adjusted" admission threshold
Students who earned their Bachelor of Science degree with a score lower than the “adjusted” admission threshold SC will not be admitted to attend to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. The ‘score’ is the average of the exams’ scores, weighted by the CFU of each exam. The “adjusted” threshold is calculated according to this formula:
SC = S + k * (min (M,N)-3)
where k = 1, M=6 and S=22
English Proficiency
For a list of the acknowledged certificates and their respective minimum requirements, please see Paragraph 7.4.
Admission without compulsory prerequisites
Applicants can be admitted to the MSc in Chemical Engineering when their Bachelor of Science degree programme is evaluated as being “consistent” with the study programme of the Master of Science degree course. The Evaluation Commission verifies these requirements, also ascertaining the need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.
Please see Paragraph 6.2, for a presentation of the evaluation process.
6.2 Requested knowledgeIn order to be admitted to the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, applicants must have acquired a knowledge base that is consistent with the study programme offered in the degree course. The evaluation of the adequacy of this knowledge base uses as a reference framework the programme of the Bachelor of Science degree course in Chemical Engineering. This means that any prerequisite that is required to prospect students derives either from a lack of “consistency” with the applicant’s Bachelor of Science degree course.
An applicant who has been assigned any prerequisites may attend “Individual Courses”, in the period before the enrolment to the Master of Science. The following three opportunities exist:
- earn credits by passing courses at the Master of Science level, by means of the “Individual Courses” program; these credits will be accepted to part of the 120 credits necessary for the Master of Science degree
- earn the ‘right to attend’ of courses at the Master of Science level. The same as before if the exam was not passed
- earn credits related to the additional compulsory modules, as requested by the Evaluation Commission for the Master of Science. These credits shall be not accounted within the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree.
Furthermore, the following restrictions are in force:
- the total amount of credits (by passing exams or only attending courses) that can be accounted under the 120 credits required for the Master of Science degree cannot exceed 32. Credits in excess of 32 could be only accepted as ‘over-limit exams’ (soprannumero);
- in any case, the total amount of credits earned by passing “individual courses” cannot exceed 80, including credits of compulsory prerequisites.
If an applicant does not pass the exams assigned as compulsory prerequisites within 18 months, he or she forfeits his/her right to admission totally and completely. 7. Contents of the study Program7.1 Programme requirementsThe achievement of the Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering requires the student to acquire 120 credits (CFU), of which at least 45 relate to characterizing disciplines (ING-IND/21, /22, /23, /24, /25, /26 and /27) and 15 relating to similar disciplines. 20 CFU are also dedicated to the Master's degree thesis. As part of the course, 5 CFU must be selected from the courses defined as Innovative Teaching (di) . International students have the opportunity to attend an Italian language course during their studies, only in case they do not know the language yet. The University organizes 40-hours Italian language courses: every student will be allocated in the appropriate level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) before the beginning of the lectures. The courses offered by the Politecnico are held in semesters, with biweekly lessons, in line with the regular academic calendar. Each student must attend at least 75% of lectures and pass a final test, delivered in 5 sessions throughout the year, in line with the regular academic calendar. Attending the course and passing the test are prerequisites for enrolling in the graduation session. Students of Italian nationality from foreign universities or foreign students who already have an Italian certificate of at least "B1" level before graduation are exempt.7.2 Mode of studyThe Course requires full-time attendance and involves normal classroom time, topic-specific seminars with experts, and laboratory activities. Visits to industrial plants are also part of the curriculum. 7.3 Detailed learning objectivesA. Curricular structure of the MSc (Laurea Magistrale)
The educational curriculum is designed to be very flexible: beside the 50 credits for compulsory courses, 50 credits are reserved for elegible courses, while 20 credits are devoted to the thesis.
The Council on the Course of Study (CCS) has prepared three pre-approved plans of study (PAPS), for specialization as process engineer, design engineer or product engineer. Pre-approved study plans do not limit the number of credits of the student's choice, but rather guide the selection according to specific courses of study.
The student has also the chance to build his or her own curriculum, hereinafter referred to as self-prepared plan of study (SPPS), which however must be approved by the CCS to verify adherence to academic policies. Before preparing a SPPS, it is recommended to contact the delegates of the CCS.
The general structure of the course is shown below, with a detailed breakdown of the educational activities pertaining to this Master.

The pre-approved plan of study N2B (Design Engineer) aims to train professionals able to define in quantitative terms, a schema of even highly complex processes with the corresponding sizing of the equipment. Characteristic elements of this professional are the ability to analyze, synthesize and optimize the logical and functional structure of the plant, to identify control strategies, and to develop an initial technical- economic analysis. This path always refers to a cultural approach attentive to the requirements of both safety and sustainable development, in line with the stringent environmental requirements. The design engineer is thus able to design and carry out installations of any complexity, but he also is an expert in the technical-scientific coordination of work groups focusing on process development and plant design. In this proposed plan of study, courses specific to unit operations (Table UO, 15 CFUs) and processes (Table PROC, 10 CFUs) are chosen. This will also include more specific courses related to safety (SIC Table, 10 CFUs).

F. POLIMI Ambassador Green Technologies
Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Green Technologies in the Master of Science degree programmes.
The goal is to create a new professional profile, the Ambassador in Green Technologies: a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The Ambassador in Green Technologies profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in the green sector, and transversal skills, which allow graduates to broaden their knowledge in the field of Green Technologies and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life-cycle of green technologies.
The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Green Technologies.
As part of the educational training, students must acquire at least 30 credits in courses related to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, which have to be chosen among those proposed in the degree programme or among additional courses, as detailed in the specific information.
The Ambassador in Green Technologies certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.
Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.
