2. General presentation of the study programme

CIVIL ENGINEERING BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSCE)

Civil Engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, assessment, monitoring, maintenance and management of structures and infrastructures, including buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams, water collection, distribution and drainage systems, transportation systems such as roads, railways, harbours, airports, and other engineering works that play a fundamental role for the economic growth and sustainable development of the modern society and resilient communities.

The Bachelor programme (BSc) in Civil Engineering aims at providing future professionals with sound theoretical principles of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science, together with the fundamentals of the core subjects of Civil Engineering (including surveying, mechanics of fluids, solids, soils and structures, hydraulic engineering works, transportation infrastructures).

In Italy, Civil Engineering education teaching started in Milan in 1862, when the “Istituto Tecnico Superiore di Milano” was founded; in 1923 it became “Regia Scuola di Ingegneria di Milano,” or “Regio Politecnico”. In that context, the degree program followed the European standards of that time: a two-year period, in which mathematics and basic sciences were extensively taught, was followed by a three-year period devoted to the study of typical engineering subjects, starting with topics belonging to the domain of engineering sciences (structural mechanics, hydraulics, surveying, etc.) and then moving on to disciplines dealing with the design of engineering works (steel and concrete structures, foundations, road design, etc.).

At the turn of the XXI century, the social changes and the evolution of the labour market in Italy brought about a reorganization of the Degree Programs, by introducing a “two-tier system”: the 1st level degree program is the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), having a duration of 3 years, and the 2nd one is the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE), having a duration of 2 years.

Civil Engineering is offered at approximately thirty Italian Universities. Although the degree programs have a similar layout in all of them, they possess an imprint peculiar to each University according to its history and size, and to local needs. According to international University rankings, Politecnico di Milano is an institution of excellence, both on a national and international level.

The Bachelor’s degree program is conceived so as to enable graduates either to find an employment in the industry or in consulting engineering offices, or to undertake graduate studies, or even both. Even though a BS graduate is capable of operating as a civil engineer, within the limits set by current legislation and the engineers’ professional register, Politecnico also aims at producing fully-qualified engineers, graduated from the five-year programme. The degree programme puts strong emphasis on the theoretical fundamentals of basic scientific disciplines, according to the tradition of the Italian engineering schools. The programme is quite demanding, so that full-time commitment is recommended. In exchange for this commitment, graduates from Politecnico di Milano will be surely highly considered by society, and will usually find a job suitable for their background and studies without any significant difficulty. BS Civil Engineers from Politecnico are appreciated even abroad, meaning that graduates having a good knowledge of English will have many employment opportunities.

3. Learning objectives

After completion of the 1st level degree programme (Bachelor Degree), students acquire mathematical and scientific competences adequate to cope with the disciplines peculiar to different branches of Engineering and gains technical skills that enable him/her to operate as Junior Engineer.

After the BSCE has been awarded, graduates can enroll in the 2nd Level Degree (Master of Science) program, or in Master and specialization courses aimed at the lifelong learning required by the Public Administration and the industry.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The student must acquire 180 credits to graduate. Two study plans are available, one taught in Italian and one taught in English. In each study plan, most courses are compulsory. Elective courses, for a total of 12 credits, can be taken from any degree program of Politecnico, provided that they are compatible with the profile of a civil engineer. The complete list of courses delivered each academic year is available in the Bachelor’s Degree Program educational rules.

The BSCE bestows the title of “dottore” in Civil Engineering. Nevertheless, to work as a junior civil engineer, graduates must pass the professional examination. The term “junior” indicates that the profession can be carried out with limitations, as established by the Italian engineers’ professional register.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)

The BSCE allows graduates to enroll in the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE), awarded after having earned 120 additional credits (two years of study). Different curricula are suggested, to help students select their own study plan. The curricula currently offered are in the following areas: Geotechnics (foundations, tunnels, retaining walls, slope stability…); Hydraulics (pipelines, water storage works, pipelines, drainage systems…); Transportation Infrastructures (roads, railways, airports…), Structures (concrete and steel structures, buildings, bridges, computational mechanics, structural dynamics …), Eartquake Engineering (seismic risk, earthquake engineering, seismic assesment). Students who prefer to pursue a broader cultural spectrum can follow a general-purpose curriculum.

To access the MSCE, specific conditions must be fulfilled by the applicants. These rules are published on the website of the School of Civil Environmental and Land Management Engineering of Engineering:

https://www.ingcat.polimi.it/en/studenti/translate-to-english-carriera-studenti/translate-to-english-ammissione-lauree-/-magistrali

The BSCE also gives access to other Master of Science programs: the requirements to be fulfilled by the applicants depend on the type of degree programme.

5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Civil Engineer is responsible for the design, realisation and management of simple constructions and infra-structures as well as of the surveying and monitoring. The curriculum of Civil Engineering allows for the treatment of specific topics in Industrial Engineering.
The first level diploma gives to the Civil Engineer the capability to effectively work in a organisation and a general knowledge to autonomously improve his specific background.

BSCE graduates are awarded the qualification of “dottore” in Civil Engineering. BSCE graduates can operate as self-employed professionals, or as employees in public administration or private companies dealing with problems of civil, building and environmental engineering involving soils, structures, transports, hydraulics, civil protection and surveying. They can act as designers or managers.

To operate as self-employees in italy, BSCE graduates must pass a professional examination and be on the Professional Register of Civil. Passing the first level professional examination certifies candidates as junior engineers; accordingly, the size and complexity of the projects they can carry out is limited by law.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

The professional opportunities for BSCE graduates are as follows.

  • companies operating in the construction and maintenance of civil works, plants and civil infrastructures;
  • public offices responsible for design, planning, management and control of urban and land systems;
  • companies, bodies, consortiums and agencies managing and controlling systems in civil works and services;
  • companies and public offices involved in feasibility studies and environmental impact assessment of infrastructures;
  • companies, professionals, consortiums, public offices, bodies and agencies involved in surveying and control.
