2. General presentation of the study programme

The purpose of the EU Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme in Architecture - Building Architecture is to train a European architect who, on the basis of advanced professional knowledge, can give suitable and updated answers to the complexity of problems tied to the Design and Building of Architecture, to the duties and professional responsibilities requested today by this sector in Europe, and who is able to operate design briefs with the contribution of a multiplicity of knowledge and techniques. This purpose can be reached by making the best critical and design tradition of the school of Architecture in Milan to cooperate with the scientific and technical tradition of the School of Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.

The best critical and design tradition of the school of Architecture in Milan cooperates with the scientific and technical tradition of the School of Engineering at the Politecnico. Training is mainly aimed at deepening the relationship between the architecture and structural design, considering the construction as technical tool in the design, but also fundamental expressive element of the architectural works.

Today, the profession demands the project as "as complex system", result of the relationship among different knowledges. Its management entrusts to the architect the central role of director, able to drive and recap this process, aiming at guarantee the realization of works and places architectural quality.

The ability to consciously play this role is, briefly, the purpose that the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme follows.

In other words, the goal of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme is to educate on the realisation and preservation and enhancing of complex works – where complexity refers both to works and places they define -in harmony with the environment they are positioned in, answering requirements of sustainability, functionality, well-being, and also suitably robust and durable in their normal use and in relation to severe natural events.

For this purpose, Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme in Architecture - Building Architecture offer a training process based on the Design Studios, that are the central moment of the master student training. These Studios are based on an interdisciplinary framework, where different disciplines contribute to elaborate the architectural project through a continuous debate applied to different themes

3. Learning objectives

Contemporary backgrounds call for cities and territories to be redeveloped and regenerated with interventions that can add structure and character to living areas. Complex architectural buildings, namely new buildings or the restoration of pre-existing ones, can add to defining new urban centres through important connection systems, mobility infrastructures, specialised equipment and services on a local and supralocal scale, etc. The realisation and preservation of these works require, on the one hand, satisfaction of increasingly higher levels of architectural quality, safety, functionality and suitability for human living, while on the other they involve the use of natural resources and the consumption of energy that condition the economy and the environment in an important manner, and the effects of which will continue over time, involving several generations.
The design of the manufactured products must incorporate extremely high levels of scientific and ethical awareness, and a construction knowledge that is the expression of form and content.
From this point of view, and in respect of the training objectives below that qualify a class LM-4 degree, namely:
- to have an extensive knowledge of the historical disciplines and of architecture, pertaining to the professions relative to architecture and building engineering-architecture, as defined by Directive 85/384/EEC and relative recommendations;
- to have an extensive knowledge of the instruments and forms of representation, the theoretical-scientific, as well as the methodological-operative, aspects of mathematics and the other basic sciences, and be able to use this knowledge to thoroughly interpret and describe problems that are complex or which required an interdisciplinary approach;
- to have an extensive knowledge of the theoretical-scientific, methodological and operative aspects of architecture, building, urban planning and restoration, and be able to use this knowledge to identify sustainable solutions;
- to formulate and solve, even in an innovative manner, problems that are complex or which require an interdisciplinary approach;
- to have awareness of ethics and professional ethics;
- to have knowledge of the field of company and enterprise organization;
- to be able to use English, both written and spoken;
The EU Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme in Architecture-Building Architecture aims at educating on the realization, preservation and enhancement of complex works
  • in harmony with the environment they are located in;
  • developed according to environmental sustainability standards;
  • that answer the requirements of functionality, well-being, fruition and use;
  • that are suitably robust for normal use and with regard to severe natural events such as earthquakes, flooding, etc.
Along their educational path, therefore, students extend their knowledge of building logic, intended as the coherence between the environment, architecture, technology and structure, against the arbitrariness of form and the casualness of building phenomena. It is clear, therefore, that the main objective of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) course is to guide the student towards an in-depth knowledge of the core disciplines, the ability to use this knowledge in order to identify, formulate and solve in a suitable manner the problems of the design, building and preservation of Architecture, making him able to manage and control the whole process: from the design to its realization.
The study route therefore requires maximum commitment from the student in the Architectural Design Studio for Complex Architecture, present both in the first and second year of the programme and characterized by the compresence of the architectural, structural, conservation and technological disciplines. The Studio activities allow students to express their planning skills and to confront each other and professors in a process of continuous dialogue.
When attending the Studios, students can grasp, together with the freedom of choice, the difficulties in coherently designing works that answer all the requirements of the contemporaneity. The professors of the Studio work in a coordinated manner on the same project, beside the students, in the classroom, guiding them until definition of the architectural and executive details, and placing attention both on the development of suitable solutions and on the appropriateness of the choices of the building industry products, in such a way that the project is developed by the students in all the architectural, structural and technological aspects.
This way of working, that characterizes all the training process, anticipates the professional modalities of integrated design process, develops personal, professional and interpersonal skills (soft skills), makes the student aware of their choices, capabilities, role and contribution in the design process.
Today, the profession demands that the work or architecture "as a system" be placed at the centre of the project, the management of which sees the architect as the main player. The ability to consciously play this role in its complexity is, briefly, the objective that the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme follows.
On the basis of this wide and founding commitment that all the responsibilities take on, the Studio becomes a place where all the disciplines meet. This is the reason for the name of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science): "Architecture", in the sense of a search for the quality of Architecture in the building world; "Building Architecture", in the sense of a search for relations between the structural and architectural design, between technical-scientific and expressive choices.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

From academic year 2016/2017 the training path of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architecture - Building Architecture presents two previously approved Study Plans (PSPA), one in Italian and the other in English.

- The PSPA in Italian, called “Architettura-Architettura delle Costruzioni”, in the first year, moves around the “Laboratorio di architettura delle costruzioni complesse 1” (second semester) and the optional studios “Laboratorio per la Conservazione delle Architetture complesse” and “Laboratorio di Strutture e Infrastrutture nel Paesaggio” offered in the first semester. In the second year the student may choice between two annual design studios: “Laboratorio di Architettura delle costruzioni complesse 2” and “Laboratorio di Architettura per la conservazione delle costruzioni complesse”.

- The PSPA in English, called “Architecture - Building Architecture”, in the first year, moves around the “Architectural design studio for complex construction 1” (second semester) and the optional studios “Sustainable Architecture construction studio" and "Architecture preservation studio" offered in the first semester. In the second year, the student may choice between two annual design studios: “Architectural design studio for complex construction 2” and “Architectural design studio for built environment preservation and trasformation”.

Complex project themes dealing with contexts that are currently very important and intricate are proposed in the studios. The studios, placed among the composition, structural, technological, material, preservation and landscape disciplines, promote an integrated multidisciplinary research process focused on the project, also using tools offered by design in BIM environment.

During their learning process, students are called on to carry out two duties: acquire an advanced knowledge of project disciplines and use this knowledge, summarising it in the elaboration of the project.

This process directly involves the disciplines of each single Studio, as well as the specific courses. In these courses the students are introduced in an organic manner to the theoretical disciplinary aspects, that are unavoidable for a humanistic training intended in the "politecnico" sense, and for acquiring the first elements of what to do, according to rigorous criteria, with planning and terminology properties.

Teaching also includes the organisation of seminars with professors from this and other universities, as well as representatives from the great national and international studios of architecture and engineering, where students can feel as if they are involved in a wider and more committed intellectual discourse on the same themes.

The courses and studios are accompanied by innovative educational experiences. In particular, in all the second-year design studios, two credits are dedicated to maximising students’ acquisition of transversal skills during the various experiences involved in the studio teaching, such as group work, collective presentations of design work outcomes, and classroom discussions of texts or designs proposed by the Professor. In addition, the courses on risk-based design include mixed teaching methods (a “blended classroom”), involving face-to-face lectures, class discussions and independent work, in such a way that students are not limited to understanding and memorising risk topics but are stimulated to analyse and assess real situations, leading them to acquire skills useful both in developing the graduation design, that they will prepare at the end of the programme, and in their future professional life. Finally, in the course of Construction History are present, interim lectures, collective moments of reflection and discussion in the classroom so that students learn to use the historiographical sources properly.

The high number of ECTS credits reserved for the architecture composition and structural design quantitatively answers the objectives of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) presented here.

In conclusion, the learning process takes the form of a comparison, the Project definition process, of all the cultures and disciplinary tools that contribute to its definition; the main feedback that the student is asked for is the ability of an autonomous and original project path based on the advanced disciplinary knowledge that he/she must acquire and be able to use.

The design studio professors alternate from the first to the second year, thus giving students the opportunity to further their knowledge of the study programme with the same professors or to change studio after the first year.

The second-year studio is, by choice, the environment in which students will prepare their graduation work. In any case, students have the opportunity to further develop other designs developed during the first-year studios, in agreement with the relevant professors, in order to lead them on to their graduation work.

4.2 Further Studies

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)

5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The educational career of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architecture - Building Architecture results in the qualification of Architect valid in the European Union.

The multidisciplinary approach of the studios permits students to experiment with group work, leading them to develop, in particular, independent judgement and communication skills. The teaching structure and the work topics proposed enable them to develop critical learning methods and the ability to tackle in-depth study independently.

Within the design studios, the integration of different skills into the construction of a design also combines mathematical and finite elements calculation skills; this allows the student to be introduced to the profession of architect through a teaching very close to the professional practice they will be required to conduct.

Through the teaching methods used, students become directly and personally aware of the complexity of design and its interdisciplinary qualities. The coexistence of two possible in-depth study directions (complex architectural design and architectural design for conservation and enhancement of built environment) within a single teaching environment provides a rich and varied educational offer and consequent job opportunities.

The teaching approach of the single-subject and/or integrated courses, together with the assessment methods adopted, permit students to develop learning skills that allow them to continue and deepen their studies independently even after graduating.

The introduction of integrated BIM courses  meets the demands of the job market.

As a result, graduate students in Architecture - Building Architecture easily find opportunities in the European construction market, entering it as a professional figure unifying the world of architecture with that of civil and infrastructural engineering.

Furthermore, the degree gives access to PhD programs, to the School of specialization in Architectural Heritage and Landscape or other Specialization Schools, to specialization courses or second level university specializing masters which required LM4 class degree.

The master degree in Building Architecture enables the graduate to operate as European Architect in professional activities as well as to be employed with high responsabilities by public or private institutions and bodies working on urban transformation and construction. A qualifying examination is required in order to obtain the enrolement in the professional register.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) graduate students can do all activities relative to the freelancing profession of a European architect; they can also hold offices of high responsibility in institutions and public and private companies (institutional companies, public and private companies), that operate in the fields of building, transformation and restoration of the city and the territory.

Given the direction of the Programme, the preparation of graduate students is particularly suitable for preliminary, definitive and executive designs of complex architectural products, and the project of preservation and use of existing buildings, with particular skills in the field of consolidation and renovation even in seismic areas.

Various testimonies confirm their ability to position themselves in European and international markets in a short time, in not insignificant roles. This also demonstrates parallel aptitudes, developed during the training years, in terms of interpersonal, self-promotion and organisational skills and the ability to present their own work and to acquire communication skills, independent judgement and awareness of their own abilities.

5.3 Qualification profile

7.3.2 additional titles POLIMI Ambassador in Green Technologies

The Master programme in Building Architecture takes part in Politecnico di Milano’s Ambassador in Green Technologies programme, aimed at strengthening the skills related to Green Technologies in higher education.

The Ambassador in Green Technologies is a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The Ambassador in Green Technologies profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in the green sector, and transversal skills, which allow graduates to broaden their knowledge in the field of Green Technologies and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life cycle of green technologies.

The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Green Technologies.

As part of the educational training, students must acquire at least 30 credits in courses related to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, which have to be chosen among those proposed in Tables A and B shown below.

Table A indicates compulsory specialized courses offered by the Master programme in Building Architecture and providing core skills in “green technologies”. For the PSPA in Italian, students may opt, for a total of 12 CFU, for the Laboratorio per la Conservazione delle architetture complesse or for the Laboratorio di strutture e infrastrutture nel paesaggio; for the PSPA in English, for the Sustainable Architecture construction studio or for the Architecture preservation studio.)

Table B indicates transversal courses offered across different programmes. At least 18 credits must be selected from the table: out of these, 4 will count against the 120 credits required for graduation (credits for the elective course in year 2 of the program), while the other 14 (at least) will be extra credits. The latter will entitle students to be awarded the PoliMI Ambassador Green Technologies badge.

The Ambassador in Green Technologies certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.

Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.

11. International context

The international experience, in which students from abroad join Italian students, counts on several years of experimentation.
For the academic year 2022/23 there are 55 places available in this course for non-EU students, all other places are available for EU students (see point 6.3).
The activation of the courses in English has greatly helped the strengthening and activation of cooperation networks with a large number of international universities, also in relation to Erasmus and double degree programs (see website https://www.auic.polimi.it/it/international-area/mobilita-internazionale-programma-exchange), creating the skeleton of a recognized identity of the School of Urban Planning, Construction Engineering and its Courses of Studies, and among them that of the Master's Degree in "Architecture-Architecture of Buildings ".

12. Internationalization

International Mobility for Study

The Politecnico di Milano offers the students various opportunities to spend periods studying abroad. The credits (ECTS) acquired, subject to the approval of a Learning Agreement, are recognized as an integral part of the curriculum.

International mobility may be for study (a) or a Double Degree (b):

a) period of study at partner universities in EU countries (Erasmus) and non-EU countries (bilateral agreements);

b) Double Degree projects with EU and non-EU universities.

Aside from these opportunities, international mobility  periods of variable lengths and natures are also possible, within international networks which the Politecnico is part of (Alliance4Tech, Athens, Idea League, UniTech).

The mobility for study generally lasts one term. It is potentially extendable, if allowed by the agreement with the partner university, for a further term, subject to authorization from the School Bodies (the Politecnico Teachers who promote the mobility for the partner university and the teachers of the Design Studio chosen by the student for the year).

During the mobility for study, it is possible to acquire credits (ECTS) and/or carry out part of the thesis at the partner university. This opportunity for some universities is specified in the call and is coordinated by the proposing professor; where it is not specified, students may nominate a co-supervisor in the partner university, as long as the objectives and content are agreed with with the teachers of the Studio selected by the student for the development of the thesis work. The final discussion of the thesis must take place at the Politecnico di Milano.

Students who take part in the Double Degree programme will obtain the Degree title from the Politecnico di Milano as well as from the partner university, after having acquired a total of 150 or 180 ECTS credits - according to the agreement - across the two universities.  Following the discussion of the thesis - in the ways agreed with the partner university - students will be awarded with two degree with two separate marks.

The marks of the exams sat abroad are validated in the ways posted on the AUIC School’s website which involve a weighted score conversion tool.

Students who have carried out a period of international mobility for study abroad during their Laurea (Bachelor of Science) can apply again during their Laurea Magistrale (Master of Science).

The universities available under the specific agreements for each Programme are posted on the Degree Programme  (Manifesto degli Studi) (https://www4.ceda.polimi.it/manifesti/manifesti/controller/extra/ScambiInternazionaliPublic.do?evn_default=EVENTO&aa=2019&k_cf=-2&k_corso_la=-2&ac_ins=0&k_indir=***&lang=EN&tipoCorso=ALL_TIPO_CORSO&semestre=ALL_SEMESTRI&c_accordo=-1) and on the International Mobility Agreements Map (https://www.polimi.it/en/services-and-opportunities/experience-abroad/map-of-partner-universities-and-mobility-agreements/) .

Students are requested to read this information before submitting their application.

International mobility is supported by both the Politecnico and the European Union with the payment of a scholarship, the amount of which varies from year to year.

In order to be able to participate in international mobility programmes, either for study or for Double Degrees, students must submit their applications via the call for International Mobility, posted periodically on the Politecnico website and on the AUIC School’s website

Students selected for mobility cannot carry out the exchange during the first term of their first year of their Master Programme.

The selected students must agree with the Professor of Politecnico, Promoter of the partnered university where they have been assigned, a Learning Agreement, i.e. a Study Plan equivalent to the teachings at the foreign university.

The Politecnico does not require a minimum number of ECTS credits, though this may depend on the partner university or on administrative restrictions to obtain a visa that may be necessary for non-EU countries.

When returning from the mobility for study, a maximum of 44 credits of teachings obtained abroad can be validated.

For students with previous career, the total sum of the credits from previous career and from international mobilitry cannot overcome the number of 44 credits.

For students who have not been selected for international mobility but who nonetheless wish to work on their thesis abroad, financial support is available thanks to the “Tesi all’estero” scholarship posted on the Politecnico di Milano website and the AUIC School’s website

https://www.polimi.it/en/current-students/tuition-fees-scholarships-and-financial-aid/scholarships-and-graduation-awards-non-dsu/scholarships-tesi-allestero/

International Mobility for Internships

The Erasmus+ for Traineeship Programme allows students to do an internship (which can replace the obligatory internship, or as an optional internship or post-graduate internship) in Europe of a minimum duration of 2 months thanks to a scholarship funded by the European Commission https://cm.careerservice.polimi.it/career-program/erasmus-for-traineeship/ . For information, students can contact the International Mobility Unit – Via Golgi 42, Milan

“FREE MOVER" student mobility

“Free Movers” are students who carry out international mobility independently organizing their study period abroad. This mobility is not tied to a Politecnico di Milano organized exchange programme.

To have credits validated and other issues recognized, Free Mover mobility must be approved by a contact person from your Course of Study. Only the following activities will be recognized: -attending lectures; -thesis work

For full regulations https://www.polimi.it/servizi-e-opportunita/studiare-allestero/mobilita-per-studio/mobilita-free-mover/

13. Quantitative data

The Didactic Observation Unit and the Evaluation Nucleus perform periodic analysis on the overall results analysing the teaching activities and the integration of graduates into the work world. Reports and studies are available on the website of the Politecnico di Milano.

15.1 Admission to the Programme - Students with Italian Degrees

All candidates for admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of  Science) Programmes at the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering are required to submit an application for career assessment using the specific function available on the University website, in the Online Services section (www.polimi.it/servizionline).

15.1.1      Programme Requirements and Specifications

The requirements are those previously described in paragraph 6.1 of the Educational Rules.

 General University information on admission and enrolment PROCEDURES is available on the University website:

http://www.poliorientami.polimi.it/

15.1.2      Procedures for Submission of Admission Applications for AUIC School Candidates

15.1.2.1 Programme and Previously Approved Study Plan Options

Candidates submitting an application for assessment must choose their Programme (CdS) together with their Previously Approved Study Plan (PSPA) options where required.

The University rules establish a maximum of three options for application for admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes. It is therefore possible to indicate up to three Programme preferences.

For each Programme, it is possible to specify the available Previously Approved Study Plans in order of preference.

For AUIC School Programmes, the various Previously Approved Study Plan options within the same Programme are only counted once towards the maximum of three preferences that may be expressed.

Example:

  1.              Programme B: (non-AUIC programme)
  2.              Programme A: (AUIC programme) ITA Track
  3.              Programme A: (AUIC programme) ENG Track
  4.              Programme C: (AUIC programme) X Track

- Students enrolled since the A.Y.  2017/18: N/V 104/27

Admission to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes of category LM-4 is not permitted for graduate students in categories L-21 and L-23 (with the exception of graduate students in Architecture and Building Production from the Politecnico di Milano, admitted with educational debits), even with a fulfilled N/V parameter, or from other non-compliant degree categories.

 *The N and V parameters (number of ECTS and weighted average) required can be found in the student’s Study Plan.

 These may vary depending on the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme applied for.

 15.1.3.2 Students Admitted with Assessment of Merit

Students not automatically entitled to admission, external students and students transferred from another Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme are subject to assessment of merit.

This assessment is performed by the relevant Programme, which may award up to 150 points:

- up to 110 points = assessment of the educational curriculum (weighted average of examination scores on a basis of at least 145 credits earned). The average of the examination scores recorded in the Plan at the time of assessment will be considered valid;

- up to 20 points = assessment of a portfolio of work including text and iconographic material, which will be assessed according to the criteria of content originality and coherence, formal quality, discursive and graphic ability and linguistic expression;

- up to10 points = assessment of experiences of traineeship or extra-curricular work fully documented, certified by the company, relevant and significant to the training of an architect and not used to validate required credits during the previous career; The starting/end date of each traineeship experience/extracurricular activity must be specified;

- up to10 points = assessment of other qualifications (certified) in research or extra-curricular training thoroughly documented, relevant and significant to the training of an architect and not used to validate required credits during the previous career.

Students required to submit a portfolio are eligible for admission with a minimum score of 100. At each deadline date, the top ranked students are accepted according to the planned number of admissions for that semester. Should there be eligible students with equal scores, their precedence in the ranking will take into account their weighted average until all available places have been filled.

15.1.6.1 Ranking system

 The places allocated to students with an Italian qualification, which may not be used to reach the number of places available within the Course of Study for the academic year 2022/23, are made available for related ranking list purposes.

The following will be excluded from the ranking list of individual Courses of Study:

- students already enrolled in one of the University's Courses of Study

- students already eligible for enrolment in the Course of Study using the ranking list.

Students who have expressed more than one CdS/PSPA option and who are eligible for the ranking list will be selected, only once, based on their first available option in the ranking.

15.1.7      Examination Validation

The deliberation n. 14779 23/03/2015 of the Academic Senate, establishes that in case of abbreviation of a study career, it is necessary to achieve at least 60 ECTS credits at Politecnico di Milano, in order to achieve a degree at this University: the 60 ECTS credits include curricular subjects, except for the internship and final thesis, which must be carried out in addition to the 60 ECTS credits. The School establishes that credits which can be validated from a previous career are only those belonging to a Master of Science career carried out in a country of the European Union.

Validated credits will automatically appear in the student’s study plan.

15.2 Admission to the Programme - Students with Foreign Degrees

Students with foreign degrees should follow the pre-enrolment procedure described on the Polinternational website (http://www.polinternational.polimi.it/), observing the established deadlines. By following this procedure, students can apply for merit scholarships and obtain further information on organising their stay in Italy during the post-admission phase.

As of the Academic Year 2021/2022, the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes in the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering will only accept new admissions of students with non-Italian qualifications in the first semester (September).

The School will consider requests for admission deferment to the second semester (defer). Obtaining a deferment is subject to the availability of planned places. Students may apply for deferment

Students will be informed of the outcome of their request at the beginning of October.

  • Students who have been granted the deferment will be asked to confirm it by paying the non-refundable administrative fee of €172.20 by a provided deadline.
  • Students who have not been granted the deferment may reapply for the following academic year.

15.3 Transfers and Changes

Transfer from other Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes or other universities is only permitted through submission of an admission application.

Transferred students’ previous examinations may be validated if deemed compatible with the course catalogue of the degree programme applied for, up to a maximum of 32 CFU. As per University regulations, students transferred from other universities are required to take examinations at the Politecnico di Milano for at least 60 credits, plus the traineeship and final test.

Enrolment on a Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) is not a guarantee of transfer without educational debits: the Commission will always take into account the first-level Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) gained, applying the regulations indicated in point 6.1.

Transfer to the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architecture-Building Architecture is not permitted for candidates enrolled at Italian universities on single-cycle Laurea Magistrale Programmes.

Students from foreign universities in countries with educational systems that do not include Laurea Triennale (equivalent to three-year Bachelor’s Degree) Programmes must guarantee enrolment on the 4th year of the programme, passing of examinations worth at least 180 ECTS credits and meeting of the minimum curricular requirements for category L-17.

15.4 Deadlines for First-Year Enrolment Administrative Procedures

Deadlines will be published every year on the website: http://www.auic.polimi.it/

15.5 Study Plan

Students are required, under their own responsibility, to submit their individual Study Plan.

The study plan submitted in September, according to the deadlines set by the School, must include the teachings for the entire academic year.

The Study Plan is taken by the School as a supporting document for all intents and purposes. Its compilation also attests to the compliance of the choices made by the student with the rules specified by law and the provisions of the Programme Rules.

The Study Plan for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architecture - Construction Architecture consists of 120 ECTS, to be included in the Plan as required credits, subdivided as follows:

- single-subject or integrated courses

- studios

-elective activities

- traineeship

- final test

It is necessary to include a course in the Study Plan in order to benefit from the associated educational services, i.e. attend lectures, appear on the Professor’s lists, participate in exercises, participate in practical and complementary activities (studios, seminars, projects, etc.), be admitted (through enrolment in exam sessions) to in-course assessments and examinations, and receive an examination assessment.

Please note: It is advisable to always save and print the Study Plan submitted.

Plan variation requests will not be accepted. Submission of the Study Plan is definitive and must be performed within the deadlines and according to the procedures established by the School. When choosing courses, the teaching timetable must be consulted in advance in order to avoid timetable clashes.

https://www.polimi.it/studenti-iscritti/piano-degli-studi-e-ofa/

15.5.1      Deadlines for Annual Study Plan Submission

Study Plan submission is performed through Online Services (www.polimi.it/servizionline > Customized Services > Career Data > Study Plan Submission), exclusively during the specific periods established by the academic calendar: https://www.auic.polimi.it/en/teaching/documents/academic-calendar

 15.5.2      Half-year Change of Study Plan

In the period shown by the academic calendar, it will be possible to change the Study Plan submitted during the academic year in progress.

Half-year change of Study Plan is optional. Students not wishing to make any alterations do not need to change the Study Plan.

 It is possible to change only courses included in the current academic year. It is not possible to add or deselect first-semester courses. Students must deselect the second-semester courses they wish to change.

It will therefore be possible to add or remove, within the second semester only, optional and compulsory courses not subject to allocation of merit, final test and traineeship.

15.5.3      Additional Payment

Through resolution of the Board of Governors, an additional payment of 100.00 euros is applicable for failure to submit the Study Plan within the deadlines established by the academic calendar.

The payment will be required with the second instalment.

 15.5.4      Attendance

Once included in the study plan, teachings are listed as acquired attendance in the following years, giving the possibility to take the examination with the original professor as long as the latter remains active. If the student wishes to attend the teaching again, when filling the study plan for the following academic year (September), they can delete the previously acquired attendance and insert the same teachings (according to the active educational offer) as new attendance.

Final test and traineeship: attendance does not expire, and these are entered in the career one time only.

https://www.polimi.it/studenti-iscritti/piano-degli-studi-e-ofa/

 15.5.4.1 Studios

Attendance of at least 70% of the Studio hours is compulsory. The attendance achieved does not expire but the examination must be taken within the three sessions of the academic year following the one in which attendance takes place. Should this time expire, the Studio must be entirely re-attended.

 15.5.5      Courses as Extra

It is possible to add courses/educational activities to the Study Plan as extras. These courses will not count towards the overall credits required for admission to the final test and will not be used in calculation of the score average.

It is possible to change the status of a course from required to extra, and vice versa, during the annual Study Plan submission period.

For all regulations, reference should be made to the specific University guide.

15.6 Allocations

15.6.1      Studios

In the first year, students enrolled on the Architettura – Architettura delle Costruzioni Previously Approved Study Plan must indicate in order of preference 2 options for Laboratorio di Architettura delle Costruzioni Complesse 1 and for the Optional Studio.

Students enrolled on the Building Architecture Previously Approved Study Plan must indicate in order of preference 2 options for the Architectural design studio for complex construction 1 and for the Optional Studio.

Placement of students in the studios will be based on their position in the ranking list and the order of the preferences expressed.

Preferences must be expressed each year will be ordered according to the following criteria:

Order by decreasing values of parameter G

      n

G=Σ  Vi •Ci

       i=l

where Vi is the score obtained in the i-th examination, Ci is the number of credits corresponding to the i-th examination, and is the number of examinations taken.

First year: the parameter G will be calculated based on the career followed at deadline of request of admission.

Second year: the parameter G will be calculated based on the career followed during the summer session.

For all students returning from Erasmus, it will not be possible to take the scores into account unless previously validated on the Plan prior to allocation.

Any admitted students who, for whatever reason, delay enrolment beyond the established deadlines will be automatically placed in the available sections.

Students are not permitted to attend studios or courses not included in the Plan. Under no circumstances may assessments relating to activities not included in the Study Plan, or not attended in accordance with the section allocations, be recognised or validated.

The School defines the number of students in each studio’s section. The School reserves the right to change this number if it is helpful for teaching,

15.6.2      Single-subject and Integrated Courses

In sections in which there are elective courses or various sections of the same single-subject or integrated course, students must express their preferences as set out by the online system and will be allocated places according to merit in accordance with the criteria indicated in the above point.

The School defines the number of students who may enrol in each teaching. The School reserves the right to change this number if it is helpful for teaching.

15.6.3     Course Priorities

The University, upon resolution of the Academic Senate, has established the following priority types:

Suggested priority

Does not establish any formal restriction. Aims to provide students with useful information on the sequence of courses but does not affect the composition of the Study Plan or examination recording.

Study Plan composition priority

Establishes a restriction which must be observed when choosing courses upon submission of the Study Plan. It is not possible for course ‘B’ to be included in the Study Plan if course ‘A’ (even if not passed) has not been included. This does not affect examination recording.

Examination recording priority

Establishes a restriction which must be observed both during Study Plan compilation and during 'positive' examination recording (passing of the course). It is not possible for ‘B’ to be recorded if ‘A’ has not been recorded.

For the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme in Architecture-Building Architecture, the course progression established by the Degree Programme must be observed.

15.7 Elective Activities

In their educational path, students are required to include optional courses designed to further explore and complete the specific topics of the individual curricula. The course catalogue of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering offers numerous courses termed ‘optional’ which serve to complete the elective course ECTS.

As an alternative, the School recognizes Workshops as specified below.

 15.7.1      Optional Courses

Upon Study Plan compilation, students may add a number of optional courses dependent on the course catalogue of the Previously Approved Study Plan enrolled upon.

A list of the courses offered and their programmes may be consulted in the Degree Programme.

No allocation is required for optional courses. The School defines the number of students who may enrol in each teaching. The School reserves the right to change this number if it is helpful for teaching.

15.7.2      MIAW

The School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering offers for students of the Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in Architectural Design and the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) in Architecture and Urban Design, Building Architecture, Architecture - Built Environment - Interiors, Landscape Architecture Land Landscape Heritage, Urban Planning and Policy Design, an intensive international programme: MIAW- the Milan International Architecture Workshop, which delivers 4 ECTS replacing the 4 ECTS of the elective activities chosen by the students.

15.7.2.1 How to attend and register for the MIAW

When filling in the study plan, the student may choose between the various international teachers, expressing their preferences in terms of sections, and will be allocated on the basis of merit according to the weighted average of the exams sat by the beginning of the summer session.

The number of places available for students of Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science), and Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science)  will be decided from year to yearly.  Incoming students from international mobility cannot participate in MIAW.

In case of vacancy, the available places may be assigned.

Students who are not admitted will be officially assigned a generic workshop code (see specifications dedicated to workshops), which will later be rectifiable during the termly period of modification of the study plan.

Attendance at the MIAW is compulsory and, unlike the other workshops, it involves a final assessment; at the end of the course, students will need to register for a date for an exam in order to obtain their mark as part of their academic career.

After allocation, it will not be possible to remove the teaching from the study plan or to replace it with another course. If students do not attend, the MIAW will have to be added as an additional course and will contribute to the payment of the second instalment of tuition fees.

Students in the first year (Master of Science) or second year (Bachelor) of their course may bring forward the MIAW activity only if they have a full study plan with all the first-year (Master of Science) or second-year (Bachelor) teaching, as per the general rules for filling in the study plan.

 15.7.3      Workshops

Workshops activities are of two types:

- workshops recognized as optional courses or excess course;

- workshops recognized as traineeship.

In relation to degree sessions, workshops can be accredited only if they end at least a month before graduation day

Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) students cannot request the accreditation of a workshop attended while being enrolled in a Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme; if the workshop has been carried out as an “excess course” during the Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme, it cannot be validated within the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme.

Educational credits earned from workshops may only be recognized if authorized in advance by the School Board, following a reasoned and supported programme proposal by a Professor (of the School or the Politecnico di Milano) coordinating the activities.

A list of the workshops accredited by the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering is available in the dedicated section of the School’s website and updated several times during the year: https://www.auic.polimi.it/it/didattica/lezioni-e-esami/workshop

In order to participate in workshops, students must follow the procedures indicated in each workshop summary sheet and refer to the relevant Professors indicated by the Professor responsible.

Students who have attended or wish to attend a workshop must observe the following procedures:

- students enrolled starting from the 2016/17 academic year, must have entered the “Workshop” line when completing the study plan.

- students enrolled in academic years prior to 2016/17, during Study Plan compilation, they may have entered the “Workshop” line or, alternatively, an optional course. Students may replace the optional course with attendance of a workshop. In this case, the change of line in the Plan will be done by the appropriate Offices during recording of credits.

Validation must be requested, at least one month before the graduation date, following the procedure indicated in the WORKSHOP section of the School website.

For the Building Architecture Programme, recognition of a maximum of 4 ECTS earned from participation in workshops is permitted (the MIAW-Milan International Architecture Workshop intensive programme is considered a workshop).

15.8 Traineeship

Students can carry out their traineeship from the first semester of the first year or at a later time, provided that it has been inserted in the Study Plan during the submission and change periods.

The School cooperates with professional associations, public administrations, local authorities and companies, to organize external traineeship activities, in order to guarantee the student the opportunity to acquire the credits required by the educational system.

In addition, students may carry out a Practical Activity (traineeship) within the Departments of the Politecnico di Milano.

The rules on traineeship duration will be established by the Programmes, in accordance with the directives of the School. All further information is available at the Traineeship Office of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering and in the dedicated section of the School’s Website: https://www.auic.polimi.it/en/students/students-university-career/internships

The University also organises Erasmus scholarships for traineeships abroad. For further information:

https://www.polimi.it/en/services-and-opportunities/experience-abroad/international-internships/

15.9 Examinations

The uniformity of procedures for checking of learning across all sections of the same course and planning of these procedures is ensured through appropriate forms of coordination, in line with the directives of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme.

At the start of the academic year, each Professor will communicate the procedures for checking of learning, the content of the examination and the assessment criteria.

For each course (individual courses or studios) there are three exam sessions. Each exam session involves one or more exam session date as established by the School’s academic calendar, each of which students may use. It is not possible to take exams at a distance (e.g. via Skype), unless there are public order events which make attendance impossible.

Students may only participate in the exam sessions if duly registered online for the examination date within the deadlines provided through the Online Services. At the end of the exam registration procedure, the system issues a receipt, to be saved and stored, that confirms the enrollment.

Students can register to an exam only if:

  •        they paid all university tuition fees
  •        that course is included in their Study Plan
  •        they passed all propaedeutic exams related to the one to which they want to be registered
  •        they attended the course, in case the attendance is compulsory

Graduating students must observe the specific deadlines established by the academic calendar in order to permit completion, within the established deadlines, of the procedures for registration for the degree exam session.

Students may also register after the deadline set by the School. In fact, they may register up until midnight of the actual exam date. In this case, the registration will be accepted as conditional, and it will be up to the teacher’s unappealable decision whether or the student not may be admitted to the exam in question.

15.10   Final Test

 The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme in Architecture - Building Architecture concludes with a Final Test involving presentation and discussion of the graduation work. The graduation work consists of an architecture project developed and explored based on the work carried out in one of the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Studios attended and completed by the student, and must be approved by the teachears of the selected Studio.

The graduation work must develop an important architectural theme, with particular attention to the theoretical and practical aspects that contribute to defining the design and to the division of the work according to the specific competencies of the different Studios. The work must also highlight the analytical, critical and design skills developed by the candidate. The point of view of design and its centrality within the educational path must guide the development of the work.

For all information on the Final Test, students must refer to the Final Test Regulations for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programmes of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering and the Additional Final Test Regulations for the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Programme in Architecture - Building Architecture published on the School’s website:
