2. General presentation of the study programmeEnvironment and Land Planning are two terms which enclose the set of problems concerning interaction between Man and Environment and which derive their origin from the pressures of society which organises its development by exploiting natural resources. The scope of disciplines of Environment and Land Planning therefore cover, first of all, the cognitive and descriptive context of the space in which we live, of the resources we use (water, air, ground, flora and fauna) and of the processes governing their alteration and qualitative characteristics, in such a way as to be able to foresee their evolution, possible decay and all the potential risks that could have an impact on human society which, in such spaces and with such resources, conducts its life.
Dealing properly with all issues concerning land organisation and protection, management of natural resources, protection and restoration of the environmental quality (water, air, ground) consequently requires technicians with specific preparation and orientation focused to this strategic and increasingly topical sector. The Politecnico di Milano has answered this need by creating, back in 1983, a Degree Programme specifically dedicated to these issues which, since 1990, has taken on the name of Environmental and Land Planning Engineering (IAT), which remains in the current Study System. The Programme trains engineers with an interdisciplinary preparation oriented both to the analysis and description of the environment, land and their alteration phenomenology as well as to the design and evaluation of technical interventions to maintain and control all issues arising from the interaction between man and the environment, within the boundaries and constrains prospected by the requirements of a sustainable development.
3. Learning objectivesThe 1st Level Degree (Bachelor of Science) in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering aims to train engineers with an interdisciplinary preparation and adequate capability to analyse environmental and land phenomena and to design works and interventions necessary to control issues connected with the interaction of man with the surrounding environment. Il Programme is divided in 2 levels which lead, respectively, to a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science. The degree provides adequate preparation for analysis and solution of problems which require the use of standard and consolidated tools, sufficient to face the issues which most frequently arise in practicing the profession in this sector; the programme is thus oriented towards the acquisition of the basic tools common to the various spheres of activity of the environmental engineer, presenting a number of examples of applications concerning complementary professional roles (ground protection and prevention against natural risks, planning and management, environmental recovery technologies, etc.)
In such general context, the overall programme has the following educational objectives:
- develop application capabilities via laboratories and internships;
- develop capabilities of autonomy of judgement by proposing development of documents in which various solutions are compared and critically evaluated;
- provide adequate knowledge of the most recent technological developments;
- provide a complete view of the main issues concerning protection of the environment;
- use simulation and optimisation tools to make efficient choices.
while the more specific objectives included within the following:
- provide a solid background in the disciplines of mathematics, physics and chemistry;
- provide basic knowledge of the processes of identification and preparation of land protection interventions;
- provide elements to describe and understand water, air and ground pollution phenomena;
- provide basic knowledge for use of cartographic tools and development of simple environmental information systems;
- provide basic knowledge useful in land planning and management;
- provide tools for elaboration of simple strategies for rational management of natural resources and ecosystems;
- provide elements for evaluation of the impact of civil works, town plans and new legislation on the environment;
- provide the necessary tools to design engineering works of limited complexity and to manage necessary interventions for land protection (natural hydrological and seismic risks);
- provide an adequate overview of suitable technologies for restoration of water, air and ground quality.
4. Organization of the study programme and further studies 4.1 Structure of the study programme and QualificationsThe degree programme includes a common nucleus of basic courses considered necessary to deal with problems of analysis of environmental and land processes at the various spatial and time scales, and takes place in the first five semesters. Such courses are aimed at acquiring detailed and solid knowledge of basic engineering educational disciplines such as mathematical analysis, geometry, physics, computer science and chemistry, and are supplemented with a further common nucleus of courses characteristic of and indispensable for the education of an environmental engineer, whatever track is chosen or for continuing to a Master of Science. In the last semester of the third Programme year, examples of application of consolidated techniques of intervention and management, updated with the most recent developments, are also provided to cope with the solution of specific macro-sectorial problems concerning complementary professional roles:
Land Protection and Prevention Against Natural Risks, addressing protection of land against hydrological and seismic risks.
Natural Resources Planning and Management, addressing land planning, management of natural resources and design of environmental and land planning information systems.
Environmental Protection and Remediation Technologies, focusing on engineering interventions for prevention and reclamation of environmental alteration phenomena involving water, air and soil resources.
Courses provided are organised in such a way as to allow students to deepen their knowledge by making contact with the professional reality both via specific teaching laboratories as well as by technical visits to plants and industries organised within the various courses. There is also the possibility of internships during the final year, possibly with the aim of preparing a document for the final graduation exam.
The Politecnico di Milano offers in addition ample possibility to participate in student mobility programs, in particular within Erasmus e Socrates programmes of the European Union which foresee a recognised period of study (3-12 months) in a foreign university (possibly for development of the work for the graduation exam) with a scholarship. The Environmental and Land Planning Engineering Programme is traditionally one of the most active in this sector.
| Schematic Structure of the study programme | 4.2 Further StudiesThe qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)
The 1st Level Degree (Bachelor of Science) gives access to the Master of Science which foresees development of educational programmes aimed at going into detail and acquiring specialist skills in specific areas of the sector of interest. The 2nd Level Degree (Master of Science) in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering therefore has four different tracks, with three of them coherent with the professional profile of the 1st level BS qualification: Land Protection and Natural Risks Prevention, Natural Resources Planning and Management, Environmental Protection and Remediation Technologies. A fourth track, Environmental Monitoring and Diagnostics, addresses issues of control, monitoring and observation of the Earth system on various territorial scales, via the design of sensors and measurement systems, control and management of atmospheric, land and underground resources. It provides the basic scientific and technical knowledge for observation, representation and management of the physical characteristics of natural and anthropic environments as well as for studying its evolution over time in order to control phenomena in progress or forecast them. For every of such objectives, remote and on-site surveys are carried out and cartographic tools and monitoring networks of environmental processes are. This track is aimed at those who intend to operate in the fields of control, monitoring and observation of the Earth system on various territorial scales. An additional track, Environmental Engineering for Sustainability, is fully available in English and provides the panoply of courses required for addressing, with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, expected impacts from natural hazards and human activities on the general environment and its single components (air, water, soil and biota), as well as their mitigation.
The educational programme of the Master of Science is configured as an "open system" able to accept both Bachelor of Science graduates in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering as well as graduates in other programmes in the fields of engineering and of science and technology. Access to the Master of Science is subject to certain regulatory constraints established by the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering, published on the School web site: http://www.ingcat.polimi.it. It is advisable to visit also the following web: http://www.ingcat.polimi.it/scuola/normativa-di-riferimento/
The qualification also allows access to 1st level Master of Science Programmes offered by universities and institutes in sectors similar or complementary to Environmental and Land Planning Engineering.
After qualifying as a Master of Science, it is possible to access second level Master of Science Programmes and compete for Ph.D. Programmes, organised in various scientific areas directly linked to environmental and land planning issues. At the Politecnico di Milano a Ph.D. in Environmental and Infrastructural Engineering is active which constitutes the natural prosecution of the Master of Science in the specific sector of Environmental and Land Planning Engineering. The Ph.D. Programme is at least a three-year Programme of activity during which the student must acquire a further 180 credits, 40 of which relating to basic research training. During the Programme the student is included in specific projects of scientific and technological development of national and international interest, developed both in collaboration with scientific agencies and within the framework of agreements with companies and engineering firms.
5. Professional opportunities and work market5.1 Professional status of the degreeThe graduate in Environmental and Territorial Engineering achieves the academic title of B.S. in Environmental and Territorial Engineering. However, in order to work as a professional engineer, it is necessary, after graduation, to successfully pass a qualification test and to enrol in the Professional Association of Civil Engineers (which comprises Civil, Environmental and Building Engineers). Successfully passing the first level qualification test entitles to work as a "junior" professional engineer, which means that there are limitations of dimension and level of complexity of the works that may be undertaken 5.2 Careers options and profilesThe main occupational opportunities of courses of this degree class are:

7. Contents of the study Program7.1 Programme requirementsIn order to achieve the first level degree (Bachelor of Science) it is necessary to acquire 180 credits as specified in the present Teaching program. The course of studies in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering forms engineers with an inter-disciplinary training oriented to the analysis and control of environmental phenomena, and to the planning of interventions with the aim of solving problems which may arise from man-nature and man-environment interaction, in the frame of sustainable development. During the first two years of the first level degree, the students are trained to undertake problems related to the analysis of environmental and territorial processes at different spatial and temporal scales, which they will meet in their future professional life. During the third year, specific problems in different macro-sectors (soil defence, natural hazard prevention, environmental monitoring, land planning and management, environmental reclamation technologies) are presented and tackled; the solutions of such problems will be based on the most consolidated and up-to-date intervention and management techniques.
The Master of Science study programme contents, on the other hand, are oriented to the development and improvement of a more focussed preparation in specific areas. In particular, students of the Master of Science Programme acquire a cultural preparation and familiarity with advanced methodologies which are applied to the development of specific issues in the scope of specialist programmes on various environmental issues. After the Master of Science it is possible to submit for the admission to Ph.D. Programmes, organised in various scientific areas directly related to environmental and land planning issues. 7.2 Mode of studyThis Course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities. 7.3 Detailed learning objectives1 Year courses - Track: M1A - Ingegneria per l'Ambiente e il Territorio
