2. General presentation of the study programme

Electrical Engineering is the engineering field that investigates applications of electrical phenomena by resorting to electromagnetic field and circuit theory. Of particular interest for this sector are electric power systems, electrical machines and drives, electronic power converters, electric systems for transportation, electric and electronic measurements, circuit theory and electromagnetic compatibility. The programme in Electrical Engineering encompasses all the subjects required to educate undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical Engineering.
Nowadays, societal and industrial growth is largely based on the availability of energy in a form that can be readily transformed into light, heat, movement, electromagnetic waves for data transmission and remote processing, electro-chemical activity. Electric energy represents the most efficient way to convert energy from primary energy sources and transport it to distant places. Its features make electricity unique for many activities in everyday life, ranging from household, industrial or service applications.
Electric energy is clean, easy to control and environment friendly. In our country more than one third of the consumed energy is converted into electric energy before its end use. Electric energy is a precious good that should not be wasted. To attain this goal, all related conversions, from initial production to end use, must be optimized. Presently, the electric energy field is undergoing significant changes that will make the future role of the electrical engineer more and more important as a key player in managing energy and protecting the environment.
Electrical Engineering inherently involves cross-disciplinary skills and covers a large number of different application areas. These  include electrical machines, electronic power converters, transformers, wide-area electrical transmission and distribution networks, electric systems for household and industrial applications, industrial automation, electric traction, heavy metallurgical industry, electromagnetic compatibility.
Production, transmission, distribution and rational and sustainable use of electric energy require B.Sc. and M.Sc. graduates in Electrical Engineering with solid capabilities in designing and managing electric systems and devices, as well as in analyzing and processing all related data. For instance, the need of exploiting renewable energy sources, such as sun and wind, by means of distributed generation that complement the traditional high-power hydro-electric and thermoelectric generation, implies a new way of designing and operating the electric distribution grid. In this field, a significant advancement is expected in the application of ICT techniques to the development of the future intelligent grid (Smart Grids).
Moreover, the ever increasing diffusion of complex and disturbance-sensitive equipment (such as, for example, data processing centers) requires an ever increasing level of quality of the electric supply that, in turn, requires new equipment to be studied and developed in order to attain a better immunity of the electrical appliances to disturbances and more reliable and fault-tolerant distribution networks.
The development of advanced fuel cells and storage systems technology is favouring a new generation of hybrid and electric vehicles and will significantly contribute to decreasing environment pollution and optimize the use of traditional and/or innovative energy sources. Moving from a regulated toward a de-regulated energy market will undoubtedly open new opportunities for customers, but will also imply new technical problems, whose solution could be found only by  highly-qualified Electrical Engineers.
These are the key topics of the Electrical Engineering programme. It is aimed at providing the necessary skills to handle all processes involved in the conversion, generation, transmission, distribution and final exploitation of the electric energy both in household and industrial applications. Particular attention is paid to the sustainability of the whole process, from both the financial and environmental points of view.
Electrical Engineering has a long history and tradition (at Politecnico di Milano it was established in 1886) and is still providing a well-recognized contribution to the advancement of new technologies that are the key enablers of the industrial growth of the modern society.

3. Learning objectives

Electrical Engineers master a wide-band knowledge of different disciplines that are needed to deal with the demanding challenges of today jobs, both in the manufacturing and research and development (R&D) sectors. Their skills shall not be and, indeed, are not only focused on production, transmission and distribution of electric energy, but cover also numerous, highly-diversified electric and electronic applications in industry, household, and service sectors, in transportation and industrial automation.
A broad and in-depth knowledge of mathematics, physics, and chemistry represents the required background of an Electrical Engineer. Significant skills in computer science, automation and electronics are required as well, since they play a significant role in modern Electrical Engineering.
The undergraduate programme in Electrical Engineering develops over three years and requires the student to earn 180 credits. This programme is aimed at forming students with sufficient knowledge to master the typical basic methods and notions of Electrical Engineering, in order to form professionals able to address the typical basic design issues.

After the B.Sc. programme, the M.Sc. program can be entered, that develops over two years and requires the student to earn additional 120 credits. This programme is aimed at forming highly-qualified professionals with the required skills to solve complex design problems and foster technological innovation in the typical fields of Electrical Engineering. This requires a solid background on the theoretical and scientific foundations of Electrical Engineering, as well as on the most advanced methods to operate electric systems and equipment.
At last, Politecnico di Milano offers, after the M.Sc. degree, the Ph.D. programme in Electrical Engineering, aimed at forming highly qualified professionals, capable of conducting top-quality research activity in Academia, R&D departments in Industry, and/or Government agencies.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

4.2 Further Studies

The B.Sc. (Laurea) degree is a strict requirement for admission to the M.Sc. (Laurea Magistrale) degree programme; the M.Sc. degree is a strict requirement for admission to the Ph.D. Programme. The B.Sc. degree also grants access to 1st level Specialization Programmes and 1st level University Master Programmes.

Access to Electrical Engineering M.Sc. programme requires to comply with compulsory requirements defined by the Study Programme Board. An evaluation Committee verifies these requirements, also ascertaining the possible need of imposing any prerequisite (i.e. additional compulsory modules) to fill possible gaps.


As B.Sc. students taking the internship do not fulfill completely these requirements, access to the M.Sc. programme in Electrical Engineering requires earning additional credits that can be acquired through individual courses.

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)

The demand for Electrical Engineers is particularly high. The most recent survey carried out by the Politecnico's di Milano Career Service shows that 100% of the B.Sc. graduates in Electrical Engineering are employed,  83% of them within six months from graduation.


5.3 Qualification profile

Profile in a work context:
The Electrical Engineer is able to face the traditional problems of basic design. This profile is characterized by a wide range knowledge, necessary to face the increasingly demanding challenges of the world of work and research, not only in the field of production, transmission and distribution of electric energy, but also in the many and different situations of industrial, domestic, hospital and transport applications and electromagnetic compatibility.

The Laurea of 1st level (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in Electrical Engineering of Politecnico di Milano provides a wide range knowledge, with the aim to enhance the skills linked to basic and specialized engineering, by putting first the methodological aspects with respect to the applicative ones.
The graduate student in Electrical Engineering obtains the first-level qualification (Engineer) in the Industrial Engineering class.
The Electrical Engineering graduate student can work as freelancer, upon State Examination and enrollment in Section B of the Register of Professional Engineers of the province of residence.

Skills of this function:
Specific skills: 
- apply the safety principles and provide design support also with reference to the costs and characteristics of components and plants;
 - draw up technical documents, metric calculations and quotations, and perform surveys, calculations and measurements;
 - understand and verify the legislative documents, regulations and technical catalogues;
 - communicate with different institutional and professional figures;
 - carry out tests and verifications on the functionality of components;
 - define the technical specifications of the components suitable for different types of applications in relation to costs, to improve energy savings;
 - work in team by discussing technical solutions based on their specific knowledge in an interdisciplinary context;
 - communicate in a complete and concise way the characteristics of the technical-plant engineering solutions also to people not from the electrical sector.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

According to Italian Law DM 270/04, applicants for the B.Sc. Programme must have received a secondary-school degree, earned after having attended a four or five-year programme, or an equivalent foreign degree recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education (level 4 EQF).

6.2 Requested knowledge

Enrolment into the B.Sc. programme requires a sufficient background in mathematics, science and verbal comprehension. Skills in these subjects are verified through an entrance test. Should the test result prove that the skills are insufficient, students are informed that they have to fulfil specific additional obligations (OFA) in order to be granted access to the second year of the programnme.

6.3 Deadlines for admission and number of places available

The available positions in the B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering are 168.

Students who are already enrolled on other degree programmes of the Politecnico di Milano or at other Universities and wish to move to the Programme can request acknowledgement of any ECTS they have already earned. Requests from Politecnico di Milano students who want to move to the Bachelor Degree are accepted only if the student has reached, by the 15th of August, a number of registered ECTS greater or equal to 15, including supplementary courses in the student's study plan. The Commission in charge of student transfers for the Degree Programme will determine which of these courses will be acknowledged as useful for attaining the degree.

The commission will accept any transfer requests only after evaluating the student's educational curriculum and considering the number of available seats.

A large number of credits earned in several other M.Sc. programmes in the class of Industrial Engineering are recognized by the B.Sc. programme in Electrical Engineering.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

In order to achieve the B.Sc. degree, students need to earn 180 credits, according to the following categories: 43 credits devoted to the basic educational activities (mathematics, physics, informatics); 73 credits concerning characterizing activities (circuit theory, electrical machines, static converters and electrical drives, electrical power systems, electrical and electronic measurements, economics, applied mechanics and technical drawing, etc.); 18 credits devoted to the supplementary and associated activities (electronics, control, chemistry, etc.). Besides, 15 credits are devoted to educational activities chosen by the students (elective credits), and 3 credits are associated with a final test. 

In order to achieve the Bachelor of Science degree, it is necessary to obtain 180 credits, distinguished according to the following criteria. 43 credits are devoted to the basic educational activities (mathematics, physics, informatics); 92 credits concern the characterizing activities (circuit theory, electrical machines, static converters and electrical drives, electrical power systems, electrical and electronic measurements, economics, applied mechanics and technical drawing; 25 credits are devoted to the supplementary and associated activities (electronics, automat control, chemistry). Besides, 16 credits are dedicated to educational activities chosen by the students, and 3 credits are devoted to a final test. In the professionalizing plan, a training period inside a firm is scheduled (11 credits on the whole, including the final test). 7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The first two years of the programme are aimed at providing a wide background in Engineering. Typical subjects of the Electrical Engineering are taught in the third year of the programme. In general, the learning approach favours methodological aspects over applications.


Starting from academic year 2017-18, most of the courses at the first year are delivered in conjunction with those of the Study Programmes in Automation Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering. This allows organization of classes of even size and simplifies transfer of students from one Program to another, for those who are interested in changing the Study Programme and submit application on time and in line with the prescribed procedure.

In particular, the following courses: Mathematical Analysis I, Fundamentals of Computer Science, Geometry and Linear Algebra, and Physics, are offered to the students of the Electrical Engineering Programme together with the students of the Programmes in Automation Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electronic Engineering. Whereas, the courses on Business Economics and Organization and Chemistry (for Electrical Engineering) are specific for the Study Programme in Electrical Engineering.

Students willing to take a job immediately after graduation, can opt for an internship in a company in order to approach the industrial context before the end of their learning plan. Nevertheless, in that case admission to M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering involves additional compulsory courses in order to achieve the required backgroung knowledge.

7.4 Foreign language

English knowledge must be ascertained before enrolment to the B.Sc. programme either by passing the English section of the entrance test or by filing suitable earned certificates, as stated in the Guide to the English Language requirements available at:

10. Infrastructures and laboratories

Students of the programme in Electrical Engineering are granted access to all facilities provided by Politecnico di Milano (computers in dedicated rooms, libraries, study rooms, refectories, sport facilities).

Several subjects includes also lab classes that are held in experimental labs specifically built and equipped for this programme in Electrical Engineering. Particularly, students can take adventage of specific labs of the Electrical Section of the Department of Electronics, Information Science and Bioengineering, the Electrical Section of the Department of Energy, and the Section of Dynamics and Vibration of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

These double-degree programmes allow brilliant and dedicated students to work in an international context that is very challenging from a cultural perspective and, at the same time, very promising in terms of learning objectives and job opportunities in a true global scenario. The students who apply for these double-degree programs are selected at the end of the third year of their B.Sc. programme, continue their studies in international classes and are given the opportunity to spend at least three-semesters at the partner university campus. At the end of their programme, they will earn the M.Sc. (Laurea Magistrale) degree in Electrical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering at the partner university.
