2. General presentation of the study programme

The Mechanical Engineering programme is designed to produce professionals that are capable of carrying out many different roles by providing an education aimed at guaranteeing a firm scientific, economic, technical and practical background, so as to facilitate a deepening of knowledge that may be required to carry out professional activities.

A mechanical engineer, being involved in the design, the production process and products and their use – both individually and as part of a plant – must have an advanced technical preparation in: machine design, regarding its functioning and resistance of its components, the transformation of energy in the machinery itself, the materials used in construction, fluid mechanics, the required manufacturing, the design - as an essential part of the design phase, services and elements relating to functioning, size and performance control and the basics of industrial automation.

3. Learning objectives

The great variety of tasks and duties expected of a mechanical engineer calls for, as the main academic objective of the programme, a solid background with well-founded scientific knowledge with a significant technical and application content, favouring immediate entrance to job market. In particular, the capacity to design, build, install and optimise machinery and plant use, the means used to activate it and related services is developed. This set-up dedicates a great deal of attention to the technical preparation in all aspects of mechanics allowing rapid adaptation to the most varied of professional needs.

Out of the training course in Mechanical Engineering, there are three fundamental roles sharing a general approach that could strengthen the method of study and encourage  the capacity  to reconfigure themselves adapting to the changes of professional reality in which they will operate.

The three different professional roles can be distinguished amongst themselves by their different capacities to innovate and apply complex models to describe the reality to be modified and/or designed:

  • the Bachelor of Science graduate: a university-trained technician, capable of developing projects and managing industrial processes with consolidated engineering methods and technologies;
  • the Master of Science graduate: a figure capable of independently developing innovation projects of products, processes and productive systems, both in the industrial and advanced tertiary fields;
  • the Doctor of Research: a figure that aside from possessing the Master of Science graduate skills, is able to independently carry out applied research projects and organise their operative activities.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The Mechanical Engineering programme’s structure is in line with the decrees on universities’ teaching autonomy and in response to the needs on structuring and improving the academic level, with the aim of favouring the entrance of mechanical engineers on the job market.  Through the structure and objectives of this programme, it introduces highly innovative characteristics and is based on a series-configured study route progressing to the qualification of:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) which is awarded after a three-year programme, after which the title of Mechanical Engineering Graduate is awarded. In the first year a solid preparation in the preparatory and foundation disciplines is provided, followed in the second year by a more engineering-orientated education in the main sectors of mechanics. In the third year, students choose between various professional tracks and one preparatory one. The means of access to the third preparatory year and the career paths are laid down in Section 7 of this document.
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) this is awarded after two years, following awarding of the Bachelor of Science. In the first year, high level engineering education is reinforced with an increase in knowledge of advanced analysis methodologies that in the second year are applied to Master of Science modules and in the Master of Science thesis development. Admission to the Mechanical Engineering Master of Science is by an entrance test based on an examination of students’ previous careers and on an assessment to ascertain whether students’ preparation is sufficient.
  • Research Ph.D. (Ph.D), awarded after studying for a further three years after the Master of Science. The Research Ph.D. was devised and organised to prepare professionals of a high cultural profile with extensive knowledge that allows them to satisfy the demands of companies, research bodies and of universities. Admission to carry out a Research Ph.D is regulated by a test.

In support of the regulations, students are encouraged to consult the School of Industrial and Information Engineering website http://www.ingindinf.polimi.it

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

In order to obtain the degree of Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, 180 credits (Cfu) must be acquired. The academic activities necessary for acquiring this amount of credits are detailed in the "Regolamento Diadattico".
In particular, a minimum number of 45 Cfu must be acquired by basic education activities (mathematics, informatics, chemistry, physics), a minimum number of 60 Cfu must be obtained within specific education activities (basic disciplines of mechanical engineering and energy engineering) and finally a number of credits obtained with complementary activities (courses on specific disciplines and industrial internships/stages in the case of the professional tracks).

In the first year priority is given to preparation of mathematical, physics and chemistry principles but already from the first term, engineering-orientated disciplines are provided, developed fully in the second year and partly in the third, with modules in the main mechanics sectors.

In this way, a mechanical engineer’s preparation is established on a solid scientific foundation to which the specific mechanical engineering subjects connect (Applied Mechanics, Machine Design, Mechanical Technologies, Materials, Methods of Technical Representation, Mechanical and Thermal Measurements).

In the third year, there is a possible choice between two alternatives: alongside the preparatory track, which has additional basic content that is useful for the subsequent Master of Science route, there are different vocational tracks with a traineeship to be carried out in a company.

As per the Undergraduate Programme, the study plan submitted by the student is effective for one year. Therefore, every year the student must select, add to the study plan and submit new courses along with the ones not passed during the previous year - according to what stated in the Regulation. Beware that the Final Exam, unless somehow related to a module not passed, and the Internship must be added to the study plan only once since the student's enrollment

Traineeship

To assist students in joining the working world, the vocational tracks in the Mechanical Engineering programme include in the third year a compulsory preparation to the traineeship (2 CFU credits) and a traineeship (16 CFU credits) to be carried out in a company.

The preparatory path to the traineeship can be accessd by students of the vocational tracks once they have gained 100 CFU (to be acquired before registering to the preparation to the trainesheep) credits and consists of 4 modules delivered both in the first and in the second semester. Students involved in an outgoing mobility programme can plan, upon agreement with the coordinator of the international mobility, the acquisition of the credits related to the preparation of the trainesheep during the mobililty period, as far as they reach 100 CFU credits once the mobility is over.

For general information and to understand how company traineeships are allocated, see the document available on the School of Industrial and Information Engineering website: http://www.ingindinf.polimi.it/

The traineeship is an educational experience carried out in an Italian or foreign company under agreement with the Politecnico di Milano. During the traineeship, students experience real company problems and situation, as per an educational project in which analysis methodologies and resolutions learnt during the programme must be applied. Students will apply the methodologies and skills acquired during their chosen track for the third year to their field of interest.

During the traineeship, the student experiences his engineering background of a concrete case of industrial interest. They actively participate in collaboration with the company personnel with identifying and resolving problems and acquire company know-how on the issue at hand, being in a totally operative context.  Access and participation in the compulsory traineeship are subject to passing 135 CFU credits (not including the credits related to the preparation to the trainesheep) and also to the availability of traineeship offers from companies in their pre-chosen track field along with subsequently passing an interview carried out in-company.

Students are advised not to leave it too late so that traineeships can be allocated, compatibly with reaching the necessary credits, in as little time as possible. Therefore, students are asked to  the time to research the internship, as described in this document, which is available on the website of the School of Industrial and Information Engineering.

7.2 Mode of study

The Mechanical Engineering course are taught trough lectures and various types of laboratory activities (computer labs, experimental labs, design&review labs). Class attendance is not mandatory but is strongly suggested.

Teaching consists of lessons in the classroom to the basic and more theoric, while during exercises in the classroom will be emphasized the more practical aspects. For courses that require it, will be organized educational workshops, for the execution and interpretation of experimental tests, or computer labs, where it is essential to the use of methods of calculation for the setting and the resolution of the examples in during the exercises.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The tables in this section describe the structure of the study tracks foreseen by the study programme board within the M.D. 270/04. The course programmes can be consulted on the School of  Industrial and Information Engineering website (www.ingindinf.polimi.it ) where general notices for students are also published.

Consider also Table V on the recommended priorities, set out in this document.

Students coming from other universities or other Politecnico di Milano programmes can apply to have their credits recognised. Cases will be examined individually by an ad hoc study programme board committee.

11. International context

The Politecnico di Milano’s School of Industrial and Information Engineering intends to actively promote student mobility programmes, given the educational importance of an international experience during university studies.

From the 3rd year onwards of a Bachelor of Science programme, students can choose to continue their studies for a variable period of one term to two years at a foreign university that the School of Industrial and Information Engineering deems of a good level and with which the Politecnico has signed an exchange agreement.

These periods of time will be fully acknowledged and exams of the Politecnico courses that will be replaced with those equivalent at the foreign university will be specified one by one. Scores achieved in examinations passed abroad, provided they can be converted to reach a mark out of thirty with criteria deemed to be reasonably reliable by the study programme board, will be valid and count towards the average of scores earned.

Further informations are available on: http://www.ingindinf.polimi.it/uploads/media/Regole_mobilita_Scuola.pdf

12. Internationalization
