2. General presentation of the study programmeEnergy engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design and management of systems and processes where energy is produced, transformed or used, in order to ensure the best use of the resources available with the minimum environmental impact. Energy systems are, for example, a large thermal power station, a photovoltaic panel, an air-conditioning and climate control equipment for residences and offices, a vehicle engine, airplane propellers, a fuel cell or simply a battery.
The subject of energy production and efficiency and subsequent impact on the environment is a key issue in a developed society today. It is also essential for the economy of developing and third-world countries. The focus is on continuous technological advances and changes of scenarios. Therefore, energy issues are at the forefront of scientific, technical and economic development and can only continue to grow.On an international level, Italy’s position is especially delicate, considering its heavy dependence on foreign countries for energy supplies. This requires “energy technicians” who are prepared to use the instruments emerging from continuous scientific and technological advances, thus promoting an increased know-how in the industry. This makes way for a rational development of energy and industrial policies, increasing awareness and responsibility to protect the environment.
The M.Sc. in Energy Engineering’s target is to educate new professionals who are able to face the challenges related to this branch of engineering, such as: thermodynamic conversion of various forms of energy, environmental consequences of energy generation, air conditioning and indoor wellbeing, and many others. These difficulties are addressed thanks to a thorough knowledge in the technological and utilization issues of the systems and the components used, and thanks to the economical analysis methodology learned throughout the study programme.
An Energy Engineer is therefore a skilled professional, whose key strength lies in the analysis and synthesis skills, that allow him/her to have an overall view of the production, transportation and utilization of energy, together with its economical and environmental implications.
3. Learning objectivesEnergy issues have taken fundamental importance for sustainable development of humanity and must therefore play a significant role in the technical and engineering culture. Sources of renewable energy and innovative technologies with minimal environmental impact, whose development requires adequate availability of prepared technicians, have recently been added alongside conventional energy resources. In the Laurea Magistrale, equivalent of the Master of Science, it is necessary to complete and increase the technical knowledge acquired during the B.Sc. (with a solid background in basic and industrial engineering subjects and, in particular, in applied thermodynamics, thermal machinery and energy systems) with further and more detailed general notions and, above all, with an approach focused on the more complex and advanced applications and on research and development.
It will therefore be necessary to address specific issues (some examples are: abatement of combustion pollutants and mitigation of greenhouse effects, advanced thermodynamic cycles for energy conversion, the most sophisticated design methodologies in climate and environmental control, solution of complex design problems regarding heat and mass transfer devices and thermal machines) for which are necessary both a more rigorous methodological analysis of sciences based on thermodynamics and an ample opening towards related inter-disciplinary issues, such as chemical engineering, management and economic methodologies and more.
Thus, the aim of the Master of Science in Energy Engineering is to prepare technicians who are able to use the main technologies concerning energy generation and utilization, and who can actively follow technological advances and operate effectively in a competitive industrial environment, characterized by significant environmental, regulatory and safety issues.
Expected results, expressed in European qualification Descriptors, are:
- Knowledge and understanding. The Master of Science-graduated student in Energy Engineering has acquired detailed knowledge of significant principles and methodologies not only in subjects pertinent to energy (heat tranfer, energy systems, air-conditioning systems, environmental impact, renewable energy sources) but also in inter-sectorial courses in the industrial area (electrics, mechanics, chemistry, economics). The Master of Science-graduated will therefore be able to interpret, analyse, model and solve complex problems concerning design, operations and application of energy processes, machines and plants. He/she also possesses sufficient knowledge to be able to offer significant and original contributions to the development of advanced technologies, operating in the area of scientific and technological research too.
- Applying knowledge and understanding. The Master of Science in Energy Engineering- graduated student is able to apply the acquired knowledge to the analysis of energy production and management processes in its various forms (electricity, heat, cold), including those most complex and advanced. He/she must precisely evaluate performance in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact, keeping in mind the economic aspects. He/she is able to identify among the technically feasible solutions and various strategies that permit significant savings in the use of primary energy (in particular from fossil sources) and minimal environmental impact, using the best methodologies in terms of analysis, calculation, design, etc. These abilities are developed in the project activity of the various courses, especially during the second year. They will find their most complete application in the thesis in which the student must demonstrate not only to have acquired the necessary cultural knowledge but also to have developed a critical mind and an ability to act, applied to broad-ranging issues with complex contents and with an original contribution.
- Making judgements. The teaching methods enable the graduate to autonomously choose (and therefore apply) appropriate analytical and modelling methods in order to develop projects satisfying specific requisites.
- Communication skills. The Master of Science-graduated student is able to interpret and draft technical reports concerning the completed projects, to consult and possibly formulate technical norms and manuals. He/she is able to present the results of his/her work with IT tools, as learnt for presentation of the final graduation exam and during several courses of the Degree Programme. In such occasions (which the programme aims to increase and incentivize), as in developing the degree thesis, the graduate will have the opportunity to work in groups with other students, developing the abilities required to successfully be part of a team and coordinate group activities.
- Learning skills. The Master of Science Degree Programme is designed to prepare a high- level technician for the worldwide employment, whilst not neglecting the possibility of continuing studies with PhD or possibly further Masters. The graduate must continuously update him/herself in the application sector, as learnt during his/her training, with documents and research carried out autonomously, in particular for the thesis.
4. Organization of the study programme and further studies 4.1 Structure of the study programme and QualificationsThe Study Programme in Energy Engineering consists of a Bachelor of Science lasting three years, followed by a Master of Science lasting a further two years and the possibility of a Research Ph.D. (Figure 1). Bachelor of Science graduates having followed the preparatory study track (EN1) are admitted to the Master of Science in Energy Engineering without debts (curricular supplements). Other graduates will be subject to an admission verification which will also state any educational debts which must be acquired before admission (see paragraphs 6.1 and 6.2). At the end of the Programme the student will have the qualification of an MSc in Energy Engineering.
| Figure 1: Academic organisation of the Degree Programme. | 4.2 Further StudiesThe qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)
After the Master of Science, graduates can apply to the Research Ph.D. in Energy and Nuclear Sciences and Technologies, which aims to give engineers an extremely in-depth, high scientific level education in order to prepare them to fill positions of high responsibility in companies active in the research and development fields. The Research Ph.D. is based on the experience of the previous Ph.D. in Energetics and Ph.D. in Nuclear Sciences, which have been a cornerstone of the University teaching history for 25 years. Admission is run by public notice, on a yearly basis.
5. Professional opportunities and work market5.1 Professional status of the degreeThe Master of Science in Energy Engineering-graduated student is a technician with a high level of education able to address all issues, even the most innovative, for the design and operation of plants for the production, distribution and use of energy, as well as of civil and industrial HVAC systems, and of their components. He/she is also able to carry out the role of energy manager in companies and bodies in which such role is required. Graduates can take the Professional Exam to qualify for enrolment in Section A of the Professional Order of Industrial Engineers. 5.2 Careers options and profilesThere are many opportunities in the job market for energy engineers: production, distribution and correct use of energy are essential fields, albeit largely problematic, of our time. The energy industry is undergoing great changes (the liberalization of markets, increased competition, decentralization, increased awareness of environmental impact issues, and the reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases) that require an increasing number of skilled technicians. There are many companies working in the energy field with a high concentration in Lombardy and Milan areas (from the large-scale boards involved in the production, transport and distribution of power, to the many companies, even small to medium-sized ones, that operate in the fields of industrial and civil plants, air-conditioning systems and system components). The professional opportunities for a Master of Science graduated engineer are:
- in the energy management field, in industry and in companies and public boards that supply energy; in reference to this, Italian legislation (law 10/91) has made it obligatoryfor companies with significant energy consumption to have a “technician who is responsible for the conservation and efficient use of energy” (an energymanager);
- in public institutions or international organizations where a specialized technician is needed in order to define strategies, energy scenarios and technological plans.
- in activities surrounding design, testing, use and maintenance of energy plants, for example heating and air-conditioning systems, food preservation systems, small and medium-sized plants that produce, distribute and use energy;
- in the design and planning of heating and cooling systems in buildings and in their construction phase;
- in industries producing and marketing equipment and components such as boilers, air- conditioning units, refrigerators, engines, heat exchangers, gas or steam powered compressors and turbines;
- in energy companies operating in the fields of thermal power, hydro-electric power, engines, oil and natural gas fields, or in the production or distribution sectors.
Master of Science graduates have access to research and development activities as well as those related to feasibility study and design of more specialist and demanding applications (large-scale plant, innovative processes, development of technologically advanced machinery and components). The more extensive and flexible preparation provided by the Master of Science programme will also open up employment possibilities in other sectors linked to the energy industry. 5.3 Qualification profileEnergy engineer - Laurea Magistrale
Profile in a work context:
The M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering is a qualified technician who deals with all the issues, even the most innovative ones, for design and operation of plants for production, distribution and use of energy, heating and air conditioning systems, as well as their components. The training allows him/her to work effectively in a competitive industrial context characterized by significant environmental, regulatory and safety issues.
The M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering can cover the role of energy manager in companies and institutions where this profile is required, and an expert in energy within national and international institutions in order to define strategies and energy scenarios.
The M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering can take the State Examination in order to enter the Section A of the Order of Engineers in the Industrial Engineeringsector.
Skills of an Energy Engineer (M.Sc.):
Specific skills:

- develop, through a multidisciplinary approach, solutions to problems on specific issues through the use of the best methods of analysis, calculation, and design.
Job opportunities: The job market offers a wide range of opportunities to the M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering: the production, distribution and rational use of energy are actually essential topics, presenting many issues, of our time. However, the energy industry must continuously adapt to the increasingly pressing demands in terms of competition in the liberalized markets, decentralization of production, greater attention to environmental impact problems and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, all of which require technicians with specificskills.
Therefore, the possible career opportunities for the M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering are:
- in the design, test and operation of thermal, thermoelectric, air-conditioning and refrigeration plants, both in industrial and civil-commercial sectors;
- in the field of production and sale of machinery and components for the energy sector such as boilers, air-conditioners, refrigerators, engines, heat exchangers, compressors and gas or steam turbines;
- in the renewable or fossil energy generation industry, in the oil and natural gas sector, in terms of production, dispatching or distribution services;
- in big companies, public institutions or international organizations where the role of energy specialists is required to contribute to the definition of strategies, energy scenarios and technological plans;
- energy management activities in companies or institutions, with production purposes outside the energy sector. It should be noted here that the Italian Legislation (Law 10/91) provides for the obligation of the profile of "responsible technician for conservation and rational energy use" (Energy Manager) for companies with significant levels of consumption.
M.Sc. graduate in Energy Engineering can work on research and development topics, as well as those related to study and design of the most specialized and demanding applications (large plants, innovative processes, development of machines and technologically advanced components). Furthermore, the broader and more flexible preparation provided by the study programme allows to have job opportunities in cross-sectoral areas that involve the energy sector.

7. Contents of the study Program7.1 Programme requirementsTo graduate 120 credits are required. Activities necessary to acquire these credits are detailed in this Teaching Regulations: they deal with the most advanced and innovative issues in the energy industry, after a necessary exploration of educational aspects in related disciplines. The degree thesis is an integral part of the programme in which the graduation candidate autonomously explores in depth an energy-related issue with the most innovative and R&D-oriented methodologies possible. 7.2 Mode of studyAttendance is not compulsory but is highly recommended: it is in fact very important in facilitating learning and in acquiring the essential critical abilities. Programme courses are delivered with conventional methods (lectures, exercises, IT, experimental and design laboratories), but with teaching methods appropriate for achieving the educational objectives defined by theDublin descriptors (see paragraph 2). 7.3 Detailed learning objectivesThe educational offer of the Master of Science in the 270/04 system is developed according to six study tracks organized in six previously approved programme tracks (referred to the Italian acronym PSPA).
- EEG - Green Power Systems track. This programme aims at providing advanced training in the production of clean power from traditional or renewable sources and the efficient use of energy through both standard and innovative technologies.
Since renewable sources have an intermittent and irregular nature, the possibility of storing energy efficiently is a key factor for their full use; this drives the search for innovative storage systems and alternative energy vectors. Finally, attention is also given to the integration of new technologies in the current power production and transport system.
- EEP - Power Generation track. This programme tracks is offered in English. It is aimed at preparing a professional figure with a broad range of cross-discipline skills required to operuate in the production of various forms of energy by thermodynamic conversion. The reference scenario includes industrial applications, electricity power stations, production processes with a high concentration of power but also distributed power generation, civil and industrial co-generation and renewable energy sources. These are engineering sectors in which problems of an industrial nature are flanked by those related to environmental protection (an issue given great attention in the proposed curriculum) in a competitive and continuously changing economic context (free gas and electricity market).
- EIT - Energy Use and Built Environment track. This programme track, offered in Italian (but near all subjects can be substituted by the corresponding ones offered in English, by selecting them in the autonomous mode), prepares specialists for design, implementation and management of Heating, Ventilating and Air Cnditioning (HVAC) plants used in civil and industrial applications (air-conditioning, cooling, etc.). Amongst others, it prepares the student in heat exchange applications in industrial components and processes, in renewable energy technologies for HVAC uses, in ventilation and environmental contamination techniques and in energy and environmental planning and control.
- EEH - Oil and Gas Engineering track. This programme track, offered in English, is aimed at preparing professional figures able to operate in the “oil and gas” industry with a general overview of the various sectors: “upstream” (resources, reserves, perforation), “midstream” (well-head rigging, transport), “downstream” (refining, end products), based on the general skills of an energy engineer. Given the natural propensity of this sector to operate in an international context, within this track, scholarships will be activated with access through competition to support successful candidates in a period of study abroad at universities with a recognised value in the “oil and gas” sector, to be carried out in the second year. The number and amount of scholarships will be defined and assigned during the first year. In particular, in the case of stipulation of a specific agreement with the ENI Group, via ENI Corporate University, successful scholarship candidates, in addition to periods abroad, can take the opportunity of paid internships at industrial sites of the ENI group, also with the objective of preparing the graduation thesis. Rules and requisites for admission to the scholarship competition (financed by ENI, by other companies in the sector and internally) will be published in time on the school Website. Unsuccessful scholarship candidates may in any case finish their career without a period of study abroad.
- EES Energy for the Development track. This curriculum aims to train a professional figure with a wide range of detailed and comprehensive technical-scientific skills in order to operate in the energy sector from a multiscale perspective, ranging from the development of appropriate technologies to energy scenario analyses, with a view on the the technical-economic and environmental sustainability of energy systems in different geographical contexts. Energy is inextricably linked to development, as highlighted in the UN 2030 Agenda, and an ever growing number of engineers are needed to work for innovation and sustainability in the energy sector with expertise and creativity. For these reasons, this "recommended plan" has been created, combining the engineering fundamentals required to deal with the technological problems of the sector with the modelling tools needed to carry out energy planning at national level or for decentralised areas, to understand and develop evolutionary scenarios of the energy sector at national or international level and to understand the socio-economic and environmental impact of the various solutions in a complete life cycle perspective. In order to foster international experience, internship opportunities for the development of dissertations with NGOs, civil society actors, national institutions, international bodies, foreign universities and research centres are offered.
- EEE - Renewables and Environmental Sustainability track. This programme track, offered in English on the Piacenza Campus only, aims at preparing a professional figure having a a mix of design, operational and management skills, with particular emphasis on system and process engineering related to the production of basic energy carriers (electricity, heat and fuels) under tight environmental constraints. Students will learn how to evaluate and solve engineering issues (thermal, environmental, mechanical, chemical, electrical) raised by energy conversion systems, as well as analyze and assess operational and maintenance issues. Particular attention will be devoted to renewable energy sources, non-conventional energy technologies, emission control, electric systems with distributed power generation. Honours Programme in Industrial Engineering - Energy
This programme falls within the strategy for high level training of Politecnico di Milano. It is intended for students with high predisposition to studies and research and aims at improving the students’ skills in order to train engineers devoted to science and technological research. The programme is structured through the ordinary Course in Energy Engineering and gives the opportunity of deepening some subjects from the point of view of both methodology and contents, under the supervision of a reference professor. For this purpose the programme foresees additional training activities in several disciplines and within the MSc Thesis for a total of 20 additional credits, including those listed in the Honours table and others within a broad choice among LM courses, guided by the interest of the student and in accordance with the reference professor. The title of the programme will be officially reported in the transcript of records together with the description of the conducted activities.
The access requirements and the modalities of attendance are described at https://www.ccs-energetica.polimi.it/it/honours-programme/
The maximum number of students who will be admitted to the Honours programme is ten (10).
Professional profile in Green Technologies
Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Green Technologies in the Master of Science degree programmes.
The goal is to create new professional profiles in Green Technologies: MSc graduates with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The profile in Green Technologies corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in the green sector, and transversal skills, which allow graduates to broaden their knowledge in the field of Green Technologies and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life-cycle of green technologies.
The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification in Green Technologies.
As part of the educational training, students must acquire at least 30 credits in courses related to the Green Technologies profile, which have to be chosen among those proposed in the degree programme or among additional courses, as detailed in the specific information.
The Green Technologies certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and in any other certificate issued by the Politecnico di Milano.
Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Green Technologies profile, will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.
Dealing specifically with the Study Programme in Energy Engineering, the guidelines listed above are implemented as follows.
All the tracks but EEE - Renewables and Sustainability: 8 ECTS effective from Table A - 16 ECTS effective from Table B - 10 ECTS excess/extra from Table B
Track EEE - Renewables and Sustainability: all the requirements for the effective credits are fulfilled, thus only 10 ECTS excess/extra from Table B are needed.
Table A and B are listed below.

7.4 Foreign languageThe Politecnico di Milano has adopted the English language as the EU language that must be known in addition to Italian. As already mentioned, to be admitted to the Master of Science, the student must have obtained certification of knowledge of English (http://www.polimi.it/en/students/from-enrolment-to-degree/english-language/). Being knowledge of English prerequisite for admission, no further verification is foreseen during the Master of Science programme. 7.5 Degree examinationThe final exam consists of preparing, presenting and discussing a graduation thesis autonomously developed by the student. Thesis work should imply an effort proportionate to the credits assigned for it (normally 20). Graduation theses may have theoretical, numeric and/or experimental characteristics and may be developed in the academic (also at foreign universities) or industrial field. The output will be evaluated according to completeness and coherency, validity of adopted methodologies, significance and topical nature of issues addressed, methodological and scientific rigor, technical abilities and clarity and completeness of presentation. In the website of the School of Industrial and Information Engineering (http://www.ingindinf.polimi.it) the "Rules for the final exam of the BSc and of the MSc Programmes" are published, along with the "Special rules for the MSc Programme in Energy Engineering".

11. International contextThe Master of Science Programme in Energy Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano is one of the best and most recognised among Italian Universities with enrolment of many students graduating from other Universities. In European Universities courses are usually much more open. It is easy to find very similar content in MSc courses in Industrial Engineering (and similar) proposed by many foreign universities, with particular reference to Northern Europe (Germany and Scandinavia), in which many courses focussed on modern energy techniques are offered (e.g.: renewable energy).
12. InternationalizationThe School of Industrial and Information Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano intends to actively promote student mobility programmes, given the educational importance of an international experience during university studies.
From the 3rd year onwards of a Bachelor of Science programme, students can choose to continue their studies for a variable period of one semester up to two years at a foreign university that the School of Industrial and Information Engineering deems of a good level and with which the Politecnico has signed an exchange agreement.
These periods of time will be fully acknowledged and examinations of the Politecnico courses that will be replaced with those equivalent at the foreign university will be specified one by one. Scores achieved in examinations taken abroad, provided they can be converted to reach a mark out of thirty with criteria deemed to be reasonably reliable by the Programme board, will be valid and count towards the average of scores earned.

Enhance Programme
ENHANCE Erasmus+ programme (https://enhanceuniversity.eu/) aims at increasing the student mobility across European institutions, standing the development of the ENHANCE European Education Pathways, an innovative education pathway that allows students to select courses across all the educational offers of the partner institutions, guaranteeing automatic recognition.
Specifically, courses can be chosen from several partner institutions, thus combining the educational offer of different partners. The student, spending one or more semesters in a university partner can attend in presence the courses and take the related exams at the selected institution, but at the same time attend the courses remotely from the other partners, if this option is viable.
In particular, the student can attend a maximum of one course of a partner institution when attending remotely, or one full semester by attending courses in presence at the partner institution location.
The available subjects are listed in the ENHANCE groups reported in the tables specifying the educational offer.
13. Quantitative dataThe Didactic Observation Unit and the Evaluation Nucleus perform periodic analysis on the overall results analysing the teaching activities and the integration of graduates into the work world. Reports and studies are available on the website of the Politecnico di MIlano.
