2. General presentation of the study programme

Graduates in Civil Engineering work in the field of constructions and infrastructures. Examples of constructions are buildings, bridges, tunnels, dams and the structural parts of industrial and power plants. Infrastructures encompass roads, railways, airports, water supply, treatment, and distribution systems, wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal systems, works ensuring the safety of land and environment.

In the two years Master’s Degree Program, students complete their training in Civil Engineering and achieve a technical preparation of a level adequate to meet the demands and challenges of the world of work. This is in line with the education system of most European countries, where the second level degree, obtained after five years of university studies, is definitely preferred, or even explicitly requested, to enter the professional world.

Accordingly, the subjects taught in the Master’s Degree Program aim at strengthening the basic preparation of the students, providing them, at the same time, with a deepened knowledge of topics central to Civil Engineering. It is believed that, today and even more in the future, civil engineers will have to face different problems with a critical attitude, which implies possessing the ability to grasp and manage their fundamental aspects in depth. In fact, one of the primary tasks of higher education is making graduates capable of specializing themselves: such ability has an intrinsic value, irrespective of the purpose of training.

Several areas were identified, among which students can choose their field of specialization: Geotechnics, Structures, Transportation infrastructures, and Water Engineering. Suggested study plans help students define their curriculum in these areas (or ‘tracks’). The track “Structures” includes four suggested study plans that allow students to deepen their training in one of these fields: Design of new structures, Assessment of existing structures, Advanced structural analysis, Earthquake engineering (available from the A.Y. 2023/’24).  The tracks Geotechnics, Structures, and Water Engineering are taught in English. The track Transportation infrastructures is mostly taught in Italian.


3. Learning objectives

3.1 Field of specialization: Geotechnics

Geotechnics is the branch of Civil Engineering that deals with all the engineering problems involving geomaterials (i.e., soil and rock), either when they constitute by themselves the mechanical system to be studied (slope stability, excavations, mining activities, subsidence and earthworks like dams, waste tips or embankments), or when they interact with civil structures (shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, underground pipelines, marine structures). Geotechnical engineering studies these systems both under static and dynamic conditions (e.g., considering the action of earthquakes, wind, waves and vibrating machines).

Geotechnics is a discipline combining notions concerning Structural Mechanics and Hydraulics, with the main goal of achieving engineering predictions on the response of the soil and the structures interacting with it and, eventually, to guarantee a proper design of these structures.

A Geotechnical engineer is called to participate to any type of technical problem of Civil, Environmental and Building Engineering that involve soils and rocks. This role may be played either as an independent professional, as an employee of the public administration, or as a consultant in private companies. In order to deal with the broad range of activities mentioned above, a solid background in basic Soil Mechanics is necessary (provided e.g. within the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Civil Engineering). In addition, advanced courses will be necessary in order to study in depth different topics. In particular, the curriculum includes advanced courses on the mechanic behaviour of soils under complex loading conditions and its mathematical modeling; the mechanical response of rock and rock discontinuities, numerical methods for the evaluation of displacements within soils, foundation settlements, pore water pressures, and earth thrusts against retaining structures; design criteria for foundations, retaining structures and tunnel linings; geotechnical problems of interest for the environment, such as slope stability analysis, slope stabilization techniques, and design of waste disposal areas, among others.

Beyond this large array of technical capabilities, it is worth mentioning that geotechnical engineers must be able to interact with a variety of other specialists, such as environmental, structural, hydraulic and transportation engineers, architects, urban planners, geologists, and all other professionals that may need expertise in many different fields. It follows that during the Master’s Degree Program, besides classical Geotechnical Engineering courses, a selection of elective courses on related disciplines will be offered, allowing students to define their study plan according to their own preferences.


3.2 Field of specialization: Water Engineering

Water resources, either natural or modified by human activities, are a key point for the development and welfare of any society. In recent years, the increasingly frequent alternation of dryness periods and high intensity rainfall events posed fundamentals and conflicting issues to Hydraulic Engineering. On the one hand, the inhomogeneous regional and seasonal availability of water requires the preservation of water resources and the optimization of their exploitation. On the other hand, the possibility that flood or other natural events cause damage to the land and the infrastructures makes it necessary to protect from flood risk areas adjacent to rivers and, from hydrological risk, hills and mountains. The teaching activities of the specialization in Hydraulics aim at training engineers capable of dealing with these issues.

Hydraulic Engineers must have skills on the design and management of any structure aimed at exploiting water resources (wells, water supply systems, hydroelectric plants, irrigation systems…) and returning them in a way compatible with the land and the environmental quality (sewers, sewage treatment plants, soil remediation). They must also be able to provide adequate security in areas exposed to flood and hydrological risk by means of river basin management and slope accommodation. The skills of Hydraulic Engineers in the hydraulic protection of the land make them among the main actors in the field of Civil Protection.

The need to integrate properly the projects in the urban and natural landscape requires a close interaction between Hydraulic Engineers and the Public Administration (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, Basin Authorities, etc.).

The proper knowledge of the theoretical aspects of Hydraulics is an essential prerequisite for the design and management of effective technical solutions; for this reason, the teaching activities include courses that frame from a theoretical point of view the motion of fluids in conveyance systems and the configuration of the corresponding civil and industrial plants, the dynamics of free surface water and groundwater, the different forms of interactions between fluids and structures.

The design and the management of the works require the knowledge of other disciplines which, together with the traditional courses of Hydraulic Engineering, help complete the formation of Hydraulic Engineers, allowing them to investigate other fields of action.

Hydraulic Engineers find extensive employment opportunities both as freelance workers and as employees of engineering companies or the Public Administration, where, in areas related to the defense of the land and to the Civil Protection, Hydraulic Engineers can act both as designers and as managers.


3.3 Field of specialization: Transportation Infrastructures

The curriculum in Transportation Infrastructures is widely matched by the higher education studies in the most important international schools of engineering. The curricular layout aims at a high specialization addressed to the field of transportation infrastructures: roads and highways, railways and subways, airports, interports and intermodal nodes, maritime harbours, waterways and river harbours, stations and transport terminals, cable-driven transports, and innovative movement systems.

A part of the curriculum is specifically devoted to the design stages of transportation infrastructures, from the initial feasibility studies, through the preliminary project, till the final executive project. At the same time, the infrastructure construction theme is fully developed through the in-depth study of construction materials and organization of complex construction sites. During the education path in transportation engineering, the wide variety of topics related to the management of services and mobility infrastructures is furtherly developed and deepened, through specific courses dealing with planning and maintenance issues. Subjects concerning the initial stages of planning and mobility strategy of people and freight are also part of the curriculum.

The complexity of large infrastructure works requires an interaction with structural, environmental and land planning engineering, as far as bridges or viaducts, environmental impact problems, and design constraints are concerned, respectively.

The elective courses available can further focus the global preparation on these specific aspects. The provided qualification allows graduates to work as professionals, members of building companies, employees in the public administration or in public transport management services. Topics pertaining to Civil Engineering related with infrastructures, however, represent a core issue if compared to management aspects.


3.4 Field of specialization: Structures

The main purpose of this specialization is to provide students with the basic knowledge and capabilities concerning the analysis and design of bearing structures. Both general and more specific subjects relevant to the structural design of civil constructions, such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels and foundations, are proposed to the students. Other structural problems, which can be found in fields different from Civil Engineering, are also dealt with during the degree program. Beside Civil Engineering, the acquired knowledge allows graduates to work in any engineering field in which structural problems are important, such as aerospace, naval, mechanical, nuclear, industrial, and transportation engineering.

The studies in Structural Engineering are also strictly related to emerging technologies and innovative materials (composites, laminates, high performance concretes, etc.). New structural problems of increasing industrial and economic interest are emerging in many and greatly diversified fields: these include e.g. microsystems, biomechanics, fluid-structure interaction, coupled (multi-phase) systems, diagnosis of damaged structures and retrofitting of historical buildings.

It should be remarked that Structural Engineering has originated the discipline of computational mechanics through the development of the Finite Element Method that, in the last decades, has methodologically and practically renewed the whole spectrum of engineering and applied sciences, and is the basis of most modern computer assisted design procedures. Nowadays Structural Engineering is still giving new developments and applications for modern computational methods. Graduates in that followed the Structural Engineering curriculum are highly appreciated by public and private sectors of Civil Engineering and by many fields of Industrial Engineering, which confirms the positive experience, cumulated in various decades, of this curriculum.

The second year of the track “Structures” comprises four suggested study plans, consisting of a group of courses in common and another group of elective courses that allow students to deepen their training in one of these fields: Design of new structures, Assessment of existing structures, Advanced structural analysis, Earthquake engineering (available from the A.Y. 2023/’24).

The qualification grants access to "Dottorato di Ricerca" (Research Doctorate), "Corso di Specializzazione di secondo livello" (2nd level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di secondo livello" (2nd level University Master)


PhD SCHOOL AND SECOND-LEVEL MASTERS

Politecnico di Milano offers to graduate students three-year courses to achieve an increasing qualification and specialization. PhD (or 3rd level) courses can be accessed following an admission examination, after obtaining the Master’s (2nd level) degree. Within the fields of materials, constructions, infrastructures, and environmental protection, the following PhD courses are currently offered:

  • Structural, Earthquake and Geotechnical Engineering
  • Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering
  • Materials Engineering.

In addition, some 2nd-level Master programs exist that deal with issues related to the design and management of buildings and infrastructures. They can be accessed passing an entrance examination, after obtaining the Master’s degree.


5. Professional opportunities and work market

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering aims at providing students with thorough professional and scientific Civil Engineering skills, which are highly requested and appreciated by both private companies and public institutions.
The student must choose one tracks out of the five available, namely: general, geotechnics, hydraulics, infrastructures and structures. 'Geothecnics' is devoted to the study of the interaction between soil and rock and structures (foundations, tunnels, retaining structures). 'Hydraulics' deals with all problems concerning water storage, transportation and control (pipelines, sewers, river and coastal erosion control, reservoirs).' Infrastructures' takes care of all problems concerning transportation engineering (road and railway design, airport and harbour design, modelling of transport fluxes). 'Structures' is devoted to the analysis and design of civil and industrial structures (buildings, bridges, dams, metallic and concrete constructions, computational mechanics). 'General' gives the student an interdisciplinary preparation taking courses from all the aforementioned specialties.


The skills achieved by graduates in Civil Engineering in the different specializations offered at Politecnico di Milano are described in Sections 2 and 3. Passing the Professional Exam enables Civil Engineers having a Master’s degree to practice as Engineers in the Civil and Environmental areas. Unlike graduates having a Bachelor’ degree, the Master’s degree avoids graduates to be subjected to any legal constraints on the size and importance of the works they can design as professionals. The level of specialisation achieved allows civil engineers to work in the field of the analysis and design of structures or infrastructures with special safety requirements, or requiring the use of highly sophisticated analysis and design methods (offshore structures, power plants, bridges and long span roofs, tall buildings, tunnels, large-scale excavations, etc.).

5.2 Careers options and profiles

Engineers having obtained the Master’s degree can find career opportunities in the following areas:
  • offices and companies involved in the design of works, plants and infrastructures;
  • construction and maintenance companies involved in civil works, plants and civil infrastructures;
  • universities and higher education research institutions;
  • public offices for the design, planning, management and control of urban and land systems;
  • businesses, organizations, consortia and agencies responsible for managing and monitoring of civil works and services;
  • service companies dealing with the urban and environmental impact of infrastructures;
  • businesses, companies and service providers, government offices, agencies,
  • consortia and management agencies for surveying and monitoring.

 

In the next few years, an increase in the employment opportunities of civil engineers for the design, construction, maintenance and management of the works envisaged by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, PNRR) can be expected.

5.3 Qualification profile

Civil Engineer


Profile in a work context:
A specialized technician who able to work autonomously, and with responsibility functions, in construction and infrastructure fields. The level of specialization achieved allows to work in areas of analysis and design of structures or infrastructures with particular safety requirements or that require the use of particularly sophisticated methods such as off-shore structures, structures for production of electric power, bridges and large span roofs, tall buildings, tunnels, large excavations, and so on.

To pass the State Examination allows the Civil Engineer with Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) to work as freelancer in Engineering, in the Civil and Environmental Sector.
Unlike first level graduate students, laurea magistrale graduate students are not subject to any law restrictions about the size and importance of the works that, as engineers, they can design.


Skills of this function:

- design, conceive and manage civil works of different types;
 - plan the works and supplies;
 - planning of security;
 - manage and organise the construction site (management of documents, materials, temporary works and machineries, development of any demolition, reclamation and disposal of waste materials, as well as all measures to reduce the environmental impact of the construction activities).

Further specific skills - Geotechnical sector
 - design, conceive, manage civil works, with particular reference to those related to lands and rocks (slopes, excavations, areas subject to subsidence, constructions in loose materials) and their interaction with the structures (shallow and deep foundations, supporting structures, tunnels, underground pipelines), in static or dynamic conditions.

Further specific skills - Hydraulics sector
 - design and manage all the works with the aim to use the water resources (wells, water systems, hydroelectric and industrial plants, irrigation systems, etc.) and water management, compatibly with the structure and security of the territory and with the environmental quality (design of sewers and sewage treatment plants, flood protection and flooding works, reclamation interventions, etc.).

Further specific skills - Transport infrastructure sector
 - design the different transport infrastructures, from first feasibility studies to the preliminary design up to the executive design of the works. 
- build infrastructures, with particular attention to construction materials and organization of complex construction sites.

Further specific skills - Structure sector
 - design supporting structures and civil and industrial buildings, such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels, large roofs, foundation and support works.

- assess and retrofit existing structures, plan interventions on historical building;
- verify the safety of structures in relation to static, dynamic and seismic loads.

- evaluate the seismic stability of the territory, analyse the effect of the superficial geology on the amplitude of the seismic shaking, define the seismic actions for structural analysis.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

In short, graduates having a Bachelor of Science who apply for the Master of Science Programme in Civil Engineering (MSCE) at Politecnico di Milano, must have reported an average minimum of:

 

- 22/30 if graduated at Politecnico di Milano in three years;
- 22.5/30 if graduated at Politecnico di Milano in four years;
- 23/30 if graduated at Politecnico di Milano in five or more years;
- 24/30 if graduated at other Italian Universities.

 

Applicants having a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) from Politecnico di Milano are exempted by the previous rule provide that they:

a) have acquired at least 100 credits and a weighted average mark of at least 24/30 before September 30 of the second year after enrolment;

b) have got the BSCE within 4 years from enrolment.

Apart from students who got their BSCE at Politecnico di Milano, the admission of other students (including foreign students) to the MSCE programme is conditional upon the evaluation by a special board. If the evaluation board requires 60, or more than 60, additional credits to be admitted to the MSCE, students must preliminarily enrolling in the BSCE programme. If less than 60 additional credits are required, the student must attend each course and pass the relevant examination before being admitted to the MSCE programme.

6.2 Requested knowledge

The MSCE programme is the natural continuation of the BSCE programme. Accordingly, the programme is organized assuming that the MSCE students have a solid background in mathematics and physics (in particular, as far as the knowledge of Mathematical Analysis and Rational Mechanics is concerned), and have a thorough understanding of the fundamental subjects of civil engineering, i.e. hydraulics and hydraulic engineering, road infrastructures, surveying, geotechnical engineering, mechanics of solids and structures, structural design.

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As specified in the teaching regulations, 120 credits are required to obtain the degree, some of which devoted to the final exam preparation. To this goal, stage periods of varying length are possible within external or internal institutions. During the two years course up to one year can be spent by the student in a foreign university within the framework of the Erasmus Programme.

Objective: helping students to organize an autonomous technical work (in particular with reference to the final thesis) and provide the essentials for an effective communication of technical and/or scientific contents.
Contents: how to find technical information: the principal available scientific database, the keywords selection; how to build and write a bibliography. How to write a scientific report: table of contents, structure, and tools (Latex). How to present the work in an effective way: structure and tools of a presentation. How to write a CV.


SOCIAL IMPACT, RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY OF TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (Soft Skills - Humanities)

Objective: developing in students an awareness of the close link between engineering achievements and the life of society.

Contents: interactions between people, institutions and material structures aimed at the development of technologies;issues of social justice, gender, privacy, security, control related to technological innovation; multiple approaches to risk theories; perception and communication of risk; ethical aspects of cost-benefit analyzes; decisions in conditions of uncertainty; responsibility for both past choices and future consequences.

Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Smart Infrastructures in the Master of Science degree programmes.

 

The goal is to create a new professional profile, theAmbassador in Smart Infrastructures: a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, digital skills, specific aptitude to innovation. The Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in relevant applications (infrastructures) and/or enabling technologies (smart), as well as transversal skills, which allow students to broaden their knowledge in the field of Smart Infrastructures and to adopt a systemic approach to design, management, innovation, and study of life-cycle of infrastructures.

 

The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures.

As part of the educational training, students must acquire at least 30 credits in courses related to the Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures profile, which must be earned by choosing:

- at least 10 ECTS from the courses provided in the selected Track and included in Table A;

- at least 20 ECTS from the courses listed in Table B, of which 10 ECTS are intended to replace elective courses of the selected Track.

The Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.

Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures profile will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.

7.4 Foreign language

According to Ministerial Decree 270/04, Politecnico considers English to be the European Union language that students must know in addition to Italian.
Starting from the academic year 2006/2007, all students admitted to a Master of Science must possess at least the level in according to parameters indicated in the notices of the Student Services Area of Politecnico di Milano.

7.5 Degree examination

The final exam consists in the public discussion of a dissertation on a subject typical of civil engineering. The thesis, which may be of theoretical, experimental, or numerical type, or a project, must deal with the topic chosen in an original way. It must be submitted in the form of written dissertation and must be countersigned by a supervisor who must be either a professor of the School of Civil Environmental and Land Management Engineering, or a professor of other Schools teaching any course of the MSCE at Politecnico. If the Supervisor recognises that the thesis is of particular significance, the President of the Study Programme will appoint an external Examiner, who is required to write a report on the thesis to be sent to the secretary of the graduation board.

8. Academic calendar

The student must consult the Academic Calendar of the ICAT School for all teaching, organizational and logistical deadlines since each School of the University may have different timing according to Programme and Campus.
