2. General presentation of the study programme

The study plan of the Master degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology is conceived to be the extension of that of the bachelor degree and is aimed at producing an advanced professional profile for a material expert and designer of processes and components. For that purpose, a deep knowledge of the characteristics and uses of the different classes of materials, as well as of the more advanced processing techniques and of their influence on the final properties of the products is required.

The study plan can be divided in two parts: 70 credits out of the total amount of 120 credits are compulsory and provide the student with an advanced knowledge of engineering materials and general methods, with special emphasis on structural and functional properties. Additional 30 credits, to be taken in both the first and the second year, can be decided by the student among the wide choice (more than 80 credits) of courses offered, which in fact represents a good opportunity for developing personal attitudes and interests. The last 20 credits are for the thesis work.

The Master degree has therefore a very multidisciplinary structure: however, in order to help the students to make their choice, several “thematic routes” are also suggested which are devoted to specific industrial sectors or applications of materials, as well as to fundamental materials studies:

 - Surface engineering

- Polymer engineering

- Nanomaterials and nanotechnology

- Engineering applications

- Microengineering and microtechnology

- Sustainability engineering

In order to strengthen the student's practical training, 5 CFU laboratory-courses have been set up covering experimental laboratory activities (characterization methods, additive manufacturing technologies) and computational laboratory activities (life cycle assessment, molecular modelling, mechanical properties modelling). In addition to the previous tracks, the Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology MSc degree has specific tracks which have been designed for internal double degree schemes with Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Civil Engineering. The programs allow students to get the double degree with a reduced number of credits (180) instead of the total amount usually required (240). The participation to these programs is subjected to the approval of a joint Admission Commission of the two Study Courses. More details about the double degree schemes are available in the relevant Annexes.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

First cycle degree (level 6 EQF) or comparable qualification

Admission to the Master of Science (MSc) in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology undergoes an evaluation process aimed to determine the eligibility of the applicant. Such process, in compliance to the existing regulations, is based upon curriculum requirements and an assessment of the preparation of the student.
As to the first requirement, the DM 22/10/2004 n. 270 establishes that a three-years Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc or Laurea) is required for the admission to the Master of Science in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology (or an equivalent or higher title, like a Master Degree or Laurea Magistrale), or another qualification obtained abroad and recognized to be equivalent. The assessment can also be made for students of the first level degree (BSc) of Politecnico di Milano, if they are candidates in the next graduation session, and for students enrolled in BSc of other Italian Universities, if they shall graduate before enrolling to the MSc.

As for contents, however, for the admission the candidate is required to have an adequate preparation in both basic disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.,) and in those disciplines characterizing materials engineering, nanotechnology, and industrial engineering. In the case of admission, any constraints in curricular options (compulsory modules, see Paragraph 6.2), will be communicated together with the positive evaluation and before enrolment, in order to provide all the information necessary for a rational choice of the study plan.
The admission to the Master Degree will be decided by an Evaluation Commission set up by the Board of Studies, according to the academic career of the applicant.

In general, the admission requirements considered by the Commission are:

• graduation at the Bachelor of Science in a number of years lower than a predetermined threshold;
• average graduation mark not below the "adjusted” admission threshold (see below for details);
• certification of English language proficiency (see Section 7.4);
• absence of need of curricular supplements (Section 6.2).

The possession of a certification attesting the knowledge of the English language is not among the requirements for the positive evaluation of the application, even if it is necessary in order to proceed with the subsequent enrollment (see Paragraph 7.4).

The details for the evaluation of those requirements are explained below.

According to the general considerations expressed above, the Academic Board approved the following procedure for admission.

- Prerequisite for admission is to have obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree no later than March 31st of 7 years after the first registration; this requirement does not apply to graduates who already have second level (Master, or five years) degree.

Top of Form 1

If this prerequisite is satisfied, students who meet all of the following three criteria are directly admitted to the Master of Science in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology:

a) graduation at the Bachelor of Science in one of following study courses at Politecnico di Milano: Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Mathematics Engineering and Production Engineering.

b) score of the Bachelor of Science Degree greater than, or equal to, an “adjusted” threshold value. The score is the average of exams scores, weighted by the CFU of each exam. The “adjusted” score is determined according to the following formula:

SC (“adjusted” score) = S + k * (min (N, N1) -3)
where

S = 22

N = number of calendar years after the first access to the national university system to graduate, + ½ if the students was graduated in February

k = 0.5, for students arriving from Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology BSc
k = 1, for all other cases mentioned in point a)

N1 = number of years to obtain the degree above which the SC value remains unchanged = 5

In case, it will be attributed a mark of 18 to all the CFU missing (excluding the final test).

c) 30 CFU achieved in the following teachings:
Code 081 273 - Introduction to Materials Science A + B; Code 089 246 - Mechanics of Solids and Structures; Code 053404 - Introduction to Nanotechnology.

If even one of the three requirements a), b), c) is not satisfied, the application will be evaluated by the Evaluation Commission, which will decide whether to admit the student to the MSc Degree course following examination of CV and, in case, after an interview. In case of positive evaluation, the necessary compulsory curricular obligations will be communicated to the applicant.

In particular:

  • In case of non-fulfillment of the joint requirements a) and b), the acceptance of the application will not be guaranteed, as it is not believed that the student will be able to fill his gaps in a period of time (or number of credits) proportionate to the duration of the second cycle degree course.
  • In case of non-fulfillment of the only requirement c), and in any case for students with a Bachelor's Degree not achieved at the Politecnico di Milano, the aplication will be assessed by the appropriate Commission, which will decide whether to admit the student to the master's degree following the CV exam; even in the event of a positive assessment, the student will in any case be referred to an interview in which any necessary additions or curricular obligations attributed to the candidate will be illustrated (see paragraph 6.2).

English proficiency
For a list of recognized certificates and their respective minimum requirements, please refer to Paragraph 7.4.

6.2 Requested knowledge

For the admission to the MSc Degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology students are required to have an adequate preparation in the core disciplines of both sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.,) and engineering (physical-chemistry and thermodynamics, materials science, mechanics of solids and structures, etc.). It is also needed to have a sound knowledge of materials engineering (technology and properties of materials, characterization techniques, design methods, etc.) and nanotechnology (physics of electromagnetic waves, quantum mechanics). Therefore, the admission to the MSc in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology is subjected to the evaluation of curricular requirements and of the level of personal preparation.
In the cases of curricula showing educational gaps in the disciplines mentioned above, the Evaluation Commission may impose some curricular obligations in form of compulsory introduction in the study plan of fundamental courses about materials science, nanoscience and nanotechnology, or mechanics of materials and structures. If the educational gaps involve other disciplines, such as chemistry or physics, these constraints may be added in form of a series of curricular obligations to be satisfied acquiring CFU in individual or excess courses to be followed and passed before being admitted to the MSc degree course in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology.

7.4 Foreign language

The Politecnico di Milano is adopting the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) for the classification of the English knowledge.

Admission to the Master degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology requires a B2 CEF level, which implies that the student must be able to understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Schools and Study Courses may at any time modify this level according to government directives or any other input from university and industrial organizations. Any variation will be communicated through the official website and by e-mail.
