2. General presentation of the study programmeThe Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering educates students who can design infrastructures and plan human development while balancing environmental health and the society’s need for better living conditions. The programme focuses on the broad range of multidisciplinary professional capabilities and expertise necessary for the analysis of environmental phenomena and the design of interventions to address problems arising from the interaction of man with nature and with the environment within the general framework of sustainable development. We achieve the mission through advanced scientific and technological education, also available within a full track in English, by offering a panoply of specialized courses and laboratories addressing all the environmental components, air, water, soil and the biota, and the impacts due to natural hazards and to human activities, as well as their mitigation.
Study organisation
The programme is divided into a first year, dedicated to the completion and enforcement of knowledge acquired in the Bachelor of Science of origin. This is achieved by offering courses in some areas of engineering basic science as well as theoretical and applied courses in the main disciplines characterising the Degree Programme, such as environmental engineering, land science utilisation, management, protection and planning.
In accordance with the strong interdisciplinary characteristics required by the degree, the second year provides for courses enabling the student to attend a programme for acquiring expertise within the main areas of professional interest: land conservation and prevention of natural and industrial risks, environmental monitoring and diagnostics, environmental resources planning and management as well as control and remediation technologies. These latter areas form the different base tracks selectable directly by the student without any further verification, with one curriculum fully available in English language. The programme organisation further allows large opportunities for supplementing the base track with elective courses on related disciplines such as energy, chemical, structural and management and production engineering, applied chemistry and physics and information technologies. The elective alternatives available and freely selectable include all courses of the Bachelor and Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering, as well as those present in all Bachelor and Master of Science Programmes offered at the School of Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. Courses from other Italian and European universities may be included, with the prior approval of the Study Course Board
Elective courses available for the students
The elective alternatives available and freely selectable include all courses of the Bachelor and Master of Science in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering, as well as those present in all Bachelor and Master of Science Programmes offered at the School of Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. Qualification requirements
Graduates need to acquire knowledge, skills and abilities to enable them to address and resolve, often in an original and innovative manner, the complex problems of Environmental and Land Planning Engineering which, by their nature, are highly interdisciplinary. These objectives are achieved via a curriculum with a high profile content both in the disciplines oriented to the acquisition of the necessary theoretical tools (mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering sciences, planning and management policies) as well as those of more specialist nature which include a wide range of application content in various fields of engineering. This allows the student to develop those technical abilities necessary to solve even leading edge issues, using advanced methodologies and in an autonomous fashion. Finally, knowledge related to the employment world and its continuous evolution is constantly updated through visits to facilities and enterprises and development of project and/or laboratory activities included in many courses
According to Law No. 33 of April 12, 2022, simultaneous enrollment in two programs is allowed. Enrollment in two programs is possible only if they are of different degree classes (classi di laurea) and differ in at least two-thirds of their educational activities regarding academic credits.
Consistent with what is defined by Law No. 33, at the student's instance, the maximum number of CFUs already taken in the other program and validatable is 40 CFUs for MSc programmes.
Please note that courses belonging to programs of a different level or type from the program you are enrolled in cannot be validated.
Full details on when to apply for validation and the administrative fees to be paid are available on the Polimi website: https://www.polimi.it/contemporanea-iscrizione 7.2 Mode of studyThis course requires a full time attendance and involves classroom and laboratory activities. 7.3 Detailed learning objectives1 Year courses - Track: M2A - LAND PROTECTION AND NATURAL RISKS PREVENTION

7.3.1 Professional profile in Green Technologies
Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Green Technologies in the Master of Science degree programmes.
The goal is to create a new professional profile, the Ambassador in Green Technologies: a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of the economy. The Ambassador in Green Technologies profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in the green sector, and transversal skills, which allow graduates to broaden their knowledge in the field of Green Technologies and to adopt a systemic approach to the design, management, innovation, and study of the life-cycle of green technologies.
The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Green Technologies.
As part of the training, student must acquire at least 30 ECTS in formative activities that result to be instrumental to the Ambassador profile in Green Technologies, regardless of PSPA (track) of reference. Of these 30 ECTS, the student must choose at least 8 ECTS (actual) from the relevant Table A and the remaining ones, to complete the 120 actual ECTS plus at least 10 supernumerary ECTS, from the relevant Table
The Ambassador in Green Technologies certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.
Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Green Technologies profile, will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.

7.3.2 Professional profile in Smart Infrastructures
Politecnico di Milano aims at strengthening the skills related to Smart Infrastructures in the Master of Science degree programmes.
The goal is to create a new professional profile, the Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures: a MSc graduate with forefront systemic skills, interdisciplinary vision, and specific aptitude to innovation in the fields of the Smart infrastructures. The Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures profile corresponds to a professional figure with both advanced, specialized skills in relevant applications (infrastructures) and/or enabling technologies (smart), as well as transversal skills, which allow students to broaden their knowledge in the field of Smart Infrastructures and to adopt a systemic approach to design, management, innovation, and study of life-cycle of infrastructures.
The training programme is articulated within the MSc educational path, and sets at 130 credits (thus at least extra 10 credits in addition to the standard MSc requirements) the minimum number of credits needed to complete the selected MSc and, at the same time, to qualify for the certification of Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures.
As part of the training, student must acquire at least 30 ECTS in formative activities that result to be instrumental to the Ambassador profile in Smart Infrastructures, regardless of PSPA (track) of reference. Of these 30 ECTS, the student must choose at least 8 ECTS (actual) from the relevant Table A and the remaining ones, to complete the 120 actual ECTS plus at least 10 supernumerary ECTS, from the relevant Table
The Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures certification will be reported in the Student’s Diploma Supplement and and an electronic badge will be issued by Politecnico di Milano.
Students who will not obtain the required extra 10 credits and the 30 credits in training activities functional to the Ambassador in Smart Infrastructures profile, will not be precluded from obtaining a MSc degree.
