2. General presentation of the study programme

The training project is built around the specific identity of the urban planner and it aims to structure the scientific and professional range according to the following special skills:

1. to design governance instruments of city and territory;
2. to understand, evaluate, manage changes of city and territory.

3. Learning objectives

The educational programme aims to develop relations among humanistic knowledge, scientific and technical skills, analytical, evaluation, planning and management experiences.

The Study Programme gives a considerable importance to the humanistic components, with an in-depth analysis in the fields of social, economic, geographical, historical, legal studies, in order to correctly create a tough technical and scientific background that promotes a successful integration of graduate students in the job market through a high understanding ability for territorial transformations along with skills in the field of analysis and design of the city and territory (environment, building, transport, services, production activities).

The educational objectives are aimed at:
1. to provide an essential picture of the Italian context by deepening international comparisons and highlighting the most relevant issues in the scientific, disciplinary and professional debate in the European and international context;
2. prepare for a high capacity of interpretation of contexts and dynamics of territorial transformations, as well as innovative competences in the field of analysis of urban and sector transformations (environment, home, transport, services, productive activities), as well as evaluation urban and territorial scenarios and projects;
3. to offer, through integrated laboratory experiences, completed design exercises, which are capable of generating technical products with high analytical-interpretative and design standards;
4. finally develop the planning and organizational capacity to set up and articulate complex interventions (plans, programs and projects), which require multidisciplinary skills.

These priorities are pursued through a unified and specifically:
1. the essential framework and cultural backgrounds are presented in compulsory courses placed between the first and second year, which address the techniques, tools, theories and policies of urban and territorial planning;
2. this essential framework is enriched by compulsory courses, always placed in the first and second year, oriented towards a multidisciplinary training in the fields of statistical mathematics, law, economics, sociology and geography, ecology and the environment ;
3. the design experiences are developed within four laboratories (two in the first year, one in the second and one in the third), weighed in a balanced way on the whole of the training course (about a quarter of the total of the CFU), which are appropriately integrated with training activities chosen from the basic and characterizing ones;
4. the construction of autonomous thematic paths is developed through the choice of optional courses and the development of the final exam paper.

At the end of the course the graduate will have the necessary knowledge to assess the physical, historical-cultural, ecological-environmental, landscape and socio-economic characteristics of the area. It will also be able to use the theories, techniques and methods of urban and territorial planning, both to evaluate the transformation processes and their effects in the broader cultural, social, economic, environmental and landscape context, and to technically conduct administrative procedures and related productive activities.
The profiles of the graduates correspond to three main figures: the analyst, the manager and the designer.

The qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)

For the continuation of studies, the graduate student in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape has different options:

- Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Study Programme in Urban Planning and Policy Design of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, admission without educational debits, but with access subject to existing Regulations of the University and School; 

- Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Study Programme in Landscape Architecture, Land Landscape Studio Heritage of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, admission without educational debits, but with access subject to existing Regulations of the University and School;

5.1 Professional status of the degree

The professional fields of the graduate student are:  undertaking the analysis on urban, territorial and environmental structures; assistance on preparation of urban and regional programmes and plans, of actions for management and environmental assessment, of administration strategies, institutions and companies for recovery, enhancement and transformation of the city, territory and environment.

The Graduate student in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape can be registered in Professional Associations upon passing the State examination. For any further information, please refer to the link of University web site (www.esamidistato.polimi.it).

The Course requires a full time involvement and includes Courses, constituted by: i) lectures and practicing, ii) Laboratory activities with compulsory attendance, iii) Seminars and Visits.

5.2 Careers options and profiles

The main employment openings provided by the study programme of this class can be included in the following fields of activity:

1. analysis of urban, territorial and environmental structures, through the use of innovative technologies;

2. contribution to preparation of plans, planning, management and evaluation;

3. participation in definition of strategies for government, institutions and companies connected to recovery, development and transformation of the city, territory and environment.

Profile in a work context:
The Graduate student profiles corresponds to the figure of analyst, manager and designer, and at the end of the Study Programme, the Graduate students:
1  are able to evaluate the physical, historical, cultural, ecological, environmental, landscape and socio-economic characteristics of the city and territory;
2  are also able to use the theories, techniques and methods of urban and territorial planning to evaluate the transformation processes and their effects in a broader cultural, social, economic, environmental and landscape context, and to technically manage the administrative procedures and the design and planning tools;
3  are able to deal with a wide range of disciplinary skills (analytical, interpretive, planning) to build possible management systems of complicated urban and territorial structures and translate into actions their ability to understand, identify, imagine, control, and modify complex situations;
4  are able to explain to the public their interpretation and intervention synthesis, basing them on appropriate topics and through the right rhetorical and suitable communication skills in order to express them rigorously, but understandable even to non-experts, the most relevant reasons on a theme of analysis or decision;
5  are also able to learn from their scientific and professional experiences, updating their original skills and tools thanks to the comparison with the institutional and social practices and through the right considerations on urban planning.
 The Graduate student in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape can be registered in Professional Associations upon passing the State examination.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

Italian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)

Upper middle school diploma or similar foreign qualification.

Admission to the first year of the "Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape" Degree Course is regulated through an admission test managed directly by the Politecnico di Milano.

It is required the carrying out of admission test also for students from other Study Programmes (of Politecnico or other University), except if at least 30 Educational Credits (ECTS) are recognized as valid, and previously acquired (score), and find correspondence with courses of the first year of the Study Programme in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape to which you want to access.

It is also required the repetition of the admission test for students previously enrolled in this or other Study Programmes, loss or that made renunciation to study.

6.2 Requested knowledge

Urban planning is typically a field of interdisciplinary studies and practices that brings and puts together humanistic and scientific-technical knowledge. The requirement for admission is a High school diploma or equivalent foreign qualification. For candidates who intend to take this study programme, it's useful to think about the keywords of the study programme title (urban planning - city - environment - landscape), with some further readings, and particular attention to the issues that can arise.

The University has established a minimum level of knowledge of the English language to allow access to degree courses. If this pre-requisite is not satisfied, an OFA (Additional Educational Obligation) of English is assigned, which foresees limitations related to the continuation of the university career.
The level of knowledge required and the relative certifications accepted by the University are described in the following point 7.4 'Foreign language assessment method'.

6.4 Tutoring and students support

The School organizes First and Second semester orientation and tutoring activities for students.

For guidance activities, the University uses the services offered by the University Guidance Service (ACRE).
The activity of the University Guidance Service is aimed at disseminating information on the training offer, admission procedures and services to Politecnico students.
In this way, it is intended to provide users with the tools useful for making the choice as much as possible aware of the university path.
The activities of the service are divided into meetings in schools, participation in orientation events, organization of events and orientation activities (open days, courses in support of preparation for admission tests, summer schools, etc.), as well as in the daily channel ad personam 'assistance, through the presence counter', the e-mail counter and the telephone one.
At the request of the schools or individual students, educational visits are organized to the laboratories characterizing the study courses.

Students enrolled in the first year will not be able to transfer internally to another Study Programme of Politecnico, in the same year of registration.

 

6.6 Changes in Educational System

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

Attainment of the 180 Credits (ECTS) specified in the didactic regulations. In particular the minimum standard guaranteed by law: i) for the basic educational activities is 30 corresponding to the sectors of Maths, Computer Science, Statistics, Ecology, Geography and Geology, Representation; ii) for the specializing activities the minimum standard guaranteed by law is 50 Credits corresponding to the sectors of Architecture and Engineering, Administrative Law, Applied Economics and Sociology; iii) for the related or integrative activities the minimum standard guaranteed by law is 18 and 8 for apprenticeship and the final exam.

The content of this Study Programme meets the minimum legal number set for training activities of Laurea Category L-21-Territorial, Urban, Landscape and Environmental Planning Science (Law270/2004).

The achievement of qualification (Laurea) is based on the acquisition, during the programme, of 180 ECTS (Cfu). The university educational credit represents the amount of learning work, including individual study, which is requested by a student to acquire the knowledge and skills that characterize the Stud Programme and that are provided in the planned training activities. For all Study Programmes of the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, a university educational credit corresponds to 25 hours of work. The average quantity of learning work, carried out in one year by a student involved in full-time university studies, is conventionally fixed at 60 credits. The time that must be dedicated to personal study or other individual learning activities cannot be less than half of the overall workload. The credits related to each educational activity are acquired by the student with the achievement of a positive assessment at the exam verification (examination, certification of activity carried out).

Each student can choose educational programmes that require, for each semester, a different number of credits from what provided in the degree programme to achieve, according to his/her needs, a progression of studies. In any case, the number of total CFU acquired, in order to achieve the qualification must be 180. During the educational programme, the contribution to be paid will be related to the number of Ects inserted each time in the individual Study plan. The minimum number of Ects that a student can insert on his/her study plan is 30, unless the number of credits needed for course completion is fewer than this number. The maximum number of Ects that a student can insert into his/her study plan, according to priorities established by regulations, is equal to 80.

The ECTS registration must comply with the sequence among teachings provided by the degree programme and the priority rules set out in paragraph 14.7.

According to Law No. 33 of April 12, 2022, simultaneous enrollment in two programs is allowed. Enrollment in two programs is possible only if they are of different degree classes (classi di laurea) and differ in at least two-thirds of their educational activities regarding academic credits. 

Consistent with what is defined by Law No. 33, at the student's instance, the maximum number of CFUs already taken in the other program and validatable is 60 CFUs for BSc programmes.

7.2 Mode of study

The Study Programme includes learning activities consisting of lectures and exercises (monographic courses, integrated courses), Laboratory activities, seminars and study trips. In some cases, the didactic offer foresees innovative learning modules.

Elective courses can be selected within a wide and articulated didactic offer, enhanced with the elective courses held by the different Study Programmes of the School.

Laboratories

In all Study Programmes the attendance of Laboratories, included Thematic Laboratories, is compulsory. The certificate of attendance, which is necessary to access its assessment test, is given by the professors responsible for the Laboratory. Any other attendance obligations will be indicated by the Study Programmes in line with directives of the School. Such obligations will be published on the website of the School (www.auic.polimi.it) and communicated to the students by the professors responsible of the courses at the beginning of the programmes. Consistency of attendance rules is guaranteed for all sections of the same course. Attendance verification is up to the professor responsible for the course based on criteria in line with an educational organization, which will be communicated to students at the beginning of the programme. These criteria can be related to the presence in the classroom and active participation of the student.

Single subject and Integrated courses

For these courses, which do not have compulsory attendance, the examination method provided for non-attendee will be communicated both through the publication on the professor's page and with communication at the beginning of the programme.

The academic year is made up of two semesters, each one consists of a teaching session and exam sessions.

7.3 Detailed learning objectives

The words “Study Plans with Prior Approval”, found on Web applications, is referred to the teaching system of the training courses. It does not mean that the choices made by the student during the compilation of the Study Plan are previously approved.

During compilation of individual study plan, each student must choose an option on Laboratories of the third year, of which multiple sections assigned to different professors are activated. Given that it can happen that a laboratory is chosen by a number of students exceeding the available places, students will be allocated in Laboratories under criteria of merit, as shown in the following paragraph 14.6.

7.4 Foreign language

The University provides as a prerequisite the knowledge of the English language.

For the degree course in Urban Planning: City, Environment, Landscape, the Polytechnic University of Milan requires enrolled students, in addition to the admission test, also the knowledge of English at the level required for admission to master's degree courses (as indicated at link https://www.polimi.it/studenti-iscritti/lingua-inglese/esami-e-certificazioni-della-lingua-ric discote-dallateneo/).
All those who do not demonstrate their knowledge of English by producing suitable certification are awarded the OFA of English.
In order to recover the English OFA, it is necessary to attend and pass the appropriate test of knowledge of the English language, reserved for students of the Polytechnic, at external institutions. These tests do not issue any certification but allow you to discharge the OFA debt of English.

7.5 Degree examination

7.5.1 Types of Final Test for the Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science)

a) The Final Exam for the conferment of the Degree consists of the presentation and discussion of a thesis paper (Final Test of type A), to be written in volume, possibly accompanied by annexes (e.g., cartographic elaborations, drawings of different formats, audiovisual complements, etc.), carried out under the guidance of a Supervisor who must be a member of the Degree Committee.
b) For the Degree Course in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape, there is no possibility of graduating with a final Type B exam (final balance of specific activities carried out by the student during the years of attendance).

c) Consistency and timing of drafting the thesis paper must be consistent with the educational credits awarded by the final exam and with the official duration of the degree course: the supervisor, who may be a teacher of the basic subject, is responsible for this congruence characterizing or similar.

d) Normally the thesis paper is to be written individually. Thesis papers written by two candidates are allowed as long as the individual contribution of each is recognizable. In this case (thesis papers with two authors) both candidates must register and present their degree paper in the same graduation session. Degree papers prepared by more than two candidates are not permitted.

e) The presentation and discussion of a thesis paper is in Italian language. On motivated request of the Graduating, a paper written in other languages can be accepted, subject to the authorization of the President of the Degree Commission, but with presentation and discussion however in Italian. If the paper is written in English or another foreign language, it must contain an extract in Italian.

f) The Supervisor of the Project is unique and must be a faculty member of the university (in the current or previous academic year) and a member of the Dissertation Commission. The Supervisor may be joined by one or more Co-supervisor. On the other hand, there is no provision for a Counter-Supervisor.

g) The thesis dissertation is not subject to be deposited.

7.5.2 Presentation and Discussion of the Final Test Graduation Work

a) With regard to the Degree Course in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape, during the final graduation exam, the candidate illustrates the contents of his thesis with a presentation lasting 15 minutes, possibly also using multimedia supports (e.g. e.g. PowerPoint, slide show ...).

b) The presentation can be extended by a further 5 minutes to answer any questions posed by the members of the Operational Commission.

c) During the final graduation exam, at least two copies of the thesis must be submitted to the Commission.

11. International context

The Politecnico di Milano offers its students the opportunity to have an experience of international mobility thanks to agreements signed with numerous partner institutions in the extra-European context.

Students can refer to the referents/promoters of international mobility identified among the Politecnico professors for the didactic aspects.

The Politecnico di Milano organizes foreign language courses each year for its outgoing students. 

The Polytechnic is carrying out comparative analyzes with the main international universities.

12. Internationalization

International Mobility

The Politecnico di Milano offers the students various opportunities to spend periods studying abroad. The credits (ECTS) acquired, subject to the approval of a Learning Agreement, are recognized as an integral part of the curriculum.

International mobility may be for study (a) or a Double Degree (b):

a) period of study at partner universities in EU countries (Erasmus) and non-EU countries (bilateral agreements);

b) Double Degree projects with EU and non-EU universities.

Aside from these opportunities, international mobility  periods of variable lengths and natures are also possible, within international networks which the Politecnico is part of (Alliance4Tech, Athens, Idea League, UniTech).

The mobility for study generally lasts one term. It is potentially extendable, if allowed by the agreement with the partner university, for a further term, subject to authorization from the School Bodies (the Politecnico Teachers who promote the mobility for the partner university).

International mobility: polimi

During the mobility for study, it is possible to acquire credits (ECTS) and/or carry out part of the thesis at the partner university. This opportunity for some universities is specified in the call and is coordinated by the proposing professor; where it is not specified, students may nominate a co-supervisor in the partner university, as long as the objectives and content are agreed with the supervisor, who must be a professor of the Politecnico di Milano. The final discussion of the thesis must take place at the Politecnico di Milano.

Students who take part in the Double Degree programme will obtain the Degree title from the Politecnico di Milano as well as from the partner university, after having acquired a total of 150 or 180 ECTS credits - according to the agreement - across the two universities.  Following the discussion of the thesis - in the ways agreed with the partner university - students will be awarded with two degree with two separate marks.

The exams sat abroad are validated in the ways posted on the AUIC School’s website which involve a weighted score conversion tool.

Students who have carried out a period of international mobility for study abroad during their Laurea (Bachelor of Science) can apply again during their Laurea Magistrale (Master of Science).

Students are requested to read this information before submitting their application.

International mobility is supported by both the Politecnico and the European Union with the payment of a scholarship, the amount of which varies from year to year.

In order to be able to participate in international mobility programmes, either for study or for Double Degrees, students must submit their applications via the call for International Mobility, posted periodically on the Politecnico website and on the AUIC School’s website

Students selected for mobility cannot carry out the exchange during the first term of their first year of their Master Programme.

The selected students must agree with the Professor of Politecnico, Promoter of the partnered university where they have been assigned, a Learning Agreement, i.e. a Study Plan equivalent to the teachings at the foreign university.

The Politecnico does not require a minimum number of ECTS credits, though this may depend on the partner university or on administrative restrictions to obtain a visa that may be necessary for non-EU countries. 

When returning from the mobility for study, a maximum of 62 credits of teachings obtained abroad can be validated.

For students with previous career, the total sum of the credits from previous career and from international mobilitry cannot overcome the number of 112 credits.

For students who have not been selected for international mobility but who nonetheless wish to work on their thesis abroad, financial support is available thanks to the “Tesi all’estero” scholarship posted on the Politecnico di Milano website and the AUIC School’s website

 International Mobility for Internships

The Erasmus+ for Traineeship Programme allows students to do an internship (which can replace the obligatory internship, or as an optional internship or post-graduate internship) in Europe of a minimum duration of 2 months thanks to a scholarship funded by the European Commission. https://cm.careerservice.polimi.it/career-program/erasmus-for-traineeship/

 

“FREE MOVER" mobility

Students who carry out an international mobility by organizing their own study period abroad are defined as "free movers".

This international mobility is not linked to an exchange program organized by Politecnico di Milano.

The freemover mobility must be approved, for the purpose of the recognition of credits and further constraints, by a referent of your course of study and will be recognized only the activities of:

- teaching attendance

- performance of thesis work

13. Quantitative data

The Didactic Observation Unit and the Evaluation Nucleus perform periodic analysis on the overall results analysing the teaching activities and the integration of graduates into the work world. Reports and studies are available on the website of the Politecnico di MIlano.

Studies Service and University Assessment Commission carry out periodic analyses of the overall results and qualitative standards on Study Programmes monitoring educational activities and the ability of graduate students to find work. 14. Further information

14.1 OFA - Additional Educational Obligations

The University regulations provide, in the first year of university, Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) resulting from weaknesses identified during registration.

 

14.1.1 English OFA - TENG

Starting from the Academic year 2008/2009, the University established the minimum level of knowledge for the English language, to access the Study Programmes, where such pre-requisite is not satisfied, an OFA (additional educational obligations) in English is assigned, which provides restrictions on the continuation of the University career.

For not having the English OFA, it must be submitted the certification of English knowledge level required.

14.1.2 Limitations related to the presence of English OFA

Students with OFA in English, at the submission of the study plan for subsequent years following the first one, will be able to insert only the teachings necessary to complete the educational offer of the first year.

In order to be able to include in the study plan the educational offer related to the second year, the OFA must be fulfilled within the deadline set by the university for submission of the study plan. Students that complete the OFA after that date, and in any case before the deadline set by the university for the half-year change of the study plan, will be able to include in the study plan only the teachings of the second semester.

 

14.2 Submission of Study Plan

The student is required, under its own responsibility, to submit the individual study plan. The plan is taken by the school as supporting document for all purposes. Its completion also certifies the conformity of the choices made by the student with the rules specified by law and provisions of the Study Programme Regulations.

Students enrolled in subsequent years will have to submit the study plan by the dates provided by the Academic Calendar. If they do not fulfill this duty, a study plan will be automatically assigned (up to a maximum of 60 Ects) and it will take account of any compulsory courses to attend, they will also be enrolled in Laboratories of the II and III years with allocation upon availability.

 

14.2.1 Additional payment

Through the resolution of the Board of Governors, the allocation of additional payment of 100,00 Euro is provided for failure in submitting the study plan within the deadlines provided in the Academic Calendar. The payment will be required with the second installment.

 

14.2.2 Allocation of students to different sections of Programmes and Laboratories

The assignment of students to possible different sections of the courses - monographic, integrated and Labotatory of 1 year - is carried out by alphabetical order and it is defined by the offices; Laboratories of 2 and 3 year and courses for which is expected the allocation by merit, on the basis of the options expressed by the student (see section 14.6 of this Regulation "Allocation criteria ..."); the allocations, once established, cannot be changed.

 

14.3 Change of Study Plan

Before the start of the second semester, in a period indicated in the academic calendar, the possibility will be given to modify the Study Plan. It will only be possible to intervene on the courses offered in the second semester (excluding courses with merit allocation) with the following opportunities:

- change 2-semester optional courses;
- add 2-semester courses, excluding laboratories;
- eliminate 2-semester courses, excluding laboratories;
- pass non-compulsory 1-semester courses added to the study plan in excess in September.

14.4 "Free” credits

The exams related to courses of the 2° semester, included again in the plan and passed in the February session as the last exam session of the previous academic year, will "free" some credits that can be included in the plan during the half-year change.

Given that the half-year change excludes the inclusion of laboratories, we recommended to those who think of free credits, to include the laboratories during the plan presentation in September and delay the inclusion of single-subject or integrated courses to the half-year change.


14.5 Courses as extra

Students can include in the study plan courses as extra chosen among those available in the training offer of the first level study programmes.


14.6 Allocation criteria for sections, optional courses and laboratories

The student will have to express a number of options equal to the number of available sections.

The placement of students in laboratories will be based on their position in the ranking list and according to the order of the options expressed.

The student who does not express the options on time, he/she will be placed in the section with fewer participants, compatible with a balanced distribution of the educational workload.

The options, expressed by the students on sections and laboratories, will be ordered according to a merit ranking list, and based on the following criteria:

 

Year of registration	The score obtained in the admission interview
Following years	Order by decreasing values of the parameter G n G= Vi•Ci i=l where Vi is the score obtained in the i-th exam, Ci is the number of credits corresponding to the i-th exam and n is the number of exam taken.

The score 30/30 cum laude will be calculated as equal to 33/30. Available places will be allocated according to the merit ranking list based on the first option expressed by the students.

Students not yet placed after the first evaluation will be assigned, by the same method and according to the availability of the remaining places, to the laboratories.

To avoid that any delays in registration or validation of exams taken could penalize the students, the parameter G will be calculated on the career acquired in the summer session.

For students enrolled in the first year, during the second phase of registration, the assignment to laboratories will not be carried out by merit, but according to the availability of places.

 

14.6.1 International Mobility

For all students coming back from the International Mobility, it will not be possible to take into account the scores if not already validated on the plan before the allocation.

 

14.7 Priority of courses and study programme progress conditions related to passed exams

In addition to what provided on degree programmes about course progression, the Study Programmes can apply the following types of priorities approved by the Academic Senate:

Priority suggested	It does not define any formal restriction. It aims to provide students with useful information about the sequence of courses, but it does not affect the composition of the Study Programme or exam registration
Priority of Study Plan composition	It defines a restriction that must be respected in the selection of courses when presenting the Study Plan. It is not possible to include in the Study Plan the course b if the course a has not been included (even if not passed). It does not affect the exam registration.
Priority of exam registration	It defines a restriction that must be met at the time of composition of the Study Plan and during the 'positive' exam registration (passed exam). It is not possible to register the exam b if the exam a has not been registered.

All students that still have not passed the exam of the Integrated course in 'Fondamenti di Matematica e Statistica Economica', when presenting the Study Plan of the third year, they cannot include in the Study Plan Urban planning laboratory 3.

In performing the exams, it is strongly recommended to respect the sequence suggested by the composition of the study plan, in progression of the years of study and their semesters.

 

14.8 Commitment and verification of course attendance

For all Study Programmes, 70% of attendance to Laboratories is compulsory. The certificate of attendance, which is necessary to access its assessment test, is given by the professors responsible for the Laboratory. Any other attendance obligations will be indicated by the Study Programmes in line with directives of the School. Such obligations will be published on the website of the School (www.auic.polimi.it) and communicated to the students by the professors responsible for the courses at the beginning of the programmes. Consistency of attendance rules is guaranteed for all sections of the same course. Attendance verification is up to the professor responsible for the course based on criteria in line with educational organization, which will be communicated to students at the beginning of the programme. These criteria can be related to the presence in the classroom and active participation of the student.

For the courses, which do not have compulsory attendance, the examination method provided for non-attendees will be communicated both through the publication on the professor's page and with a communication at the beginning of the programme.

 

14.9 Score evaluation

It is guaranteed, through appropriate forms of coordination, the homogeneity of checking procedures of learning among all sections of the same course, in line with the directives of the Study Programmes. The main related directives are the following:

• professors can plan in-course tests. They can be seen as an evaluation or as a contribution to the final evaluation. These procedures will be made known through the website of the School and communicated to the students by professors responsible for courses at the beginning of them; In any case, the failure or unsuccessful carrying out of in-course tests does not preclude the student to sit the next three exam sessions expected.
• the in-course tests of Laboratories, which require compulsory attendance, will be considered as an additional contribution to the final evaluation and will consist of an evaluation of the progress in project activity. Students, who have not obtained the attendance, will not be admitted to the exam sessions and must attend again the Laboratory.

In order to take the exam, students are required to always register for the exam sessions.

It is forbidden to take exams of a course or laboratory to which you are not regularly enrolled. Based on the evaluation tests, the exams of the students can be:

• passed, with the assignment of a score;
• postponed, to a later evaluation;
• to sit again, if they have not fulfilled the obligations of the Study Programme or passed the exam within the third exam session; in this case, course attendance is not valid and the student must attend again the programme. 

For each course (programmes or laboratories), there are three exam sessions. There are at least two exam session dates, both can be used by students.

Graduating students must use only the first date in order to allow the completion of procedures required to access the Degree exam session.

 

14.10 Self-certification of passed exam

In case that, when submitting the study plan, an exam already taken (of which therefore the score is known) is not yet registered in career, the student can self-certify the exam.

In order to consider the exam taken as valid, it is necessary that the student is officially enrolled on the programme or laboratory and to the related exam session. It is not allowed to self- certify a course of which the exam has not yet been sat when completing the plan. A false declaration has the effect of prohibiting registration to the exam sessions of self-certified course, and it implies the cancellation of the course or laboratory and the impossibility to put it back until the next a.y.

 

14.11 Conclusion of the Study programme and Graduation

In order to graduate, students must have acquired the credits related to the courses provided by the Degree programme and also the credits, as defined by the Study Programmes, related to:

• optional student activities;
• traineeship activity;
• degree examination (refer to paragraph 7.5).

14.11.1 Optional student activities

They can be chosen within the training offer of the Study Programme or out of it. It means that the first ones are automatically approved. Any other choices must be firstly authorized by the School that, having assessed the conformity and consistency, gives, for each specific case, the number of educational credits. To acquire credits related to optional activities of the student, for each Study Programme, a wide number of optional courses has been activated. You can replace optional courses with workshops offered by the School AUIC (Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering) up to a maximum of 8 credits only if your study plan complies with the minimum table values required by existing law.

The student must always verify possible overlaps before the selection of optional courses.

 

14.11.2 Workshop

Workshop activities are of two types:

- workshops recognized as optional courses or excess course;

- workshops recognized as a traineeship.

In relation to degree sessions, workshops can be accredited only if they end at least a month before graduation day

Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) students cannot request the accreditation of a workshop attended while being enrolled in a Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme; if the workshop has been carried out as an “excess course” during the Laurea Triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme, it cannot be validated within the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme.

Educational credits earned from workshops may only be recognized if authorized in advance by the School Board, following a reasoned and supported programme proposal by a Professor (of the School or the Politecnico di Milano) coordinating the activities.

In order to participate in workshops, students must follow the procedures indicated in each workshop summary sheet and refer to the relevant Professors indicated by the Professor responsible.

Students who have attended or wish to attend a workshop must observe the following procedures:

- students enrolled starting from the 2016/17 academic year, must have entered the “Workshop” line when completing the study plan. 

- students enrolled in academic years prior to 2016/17, during Study Plan compilation, they may have entered the “Workshop” line or, alternatively, an optional course. Students may replace the optional course with attendance of a workshop. In this case, the appropriate Offices will do the change of line in the Plan during recording of credits.

Validation must be requested, at least one month before the graduation date, following the procedure indicated in the WORKSHOP section of the School website.

14.11.3 Traineeship activity

The internship is an experience that allows the student to acquire a first direct knowledge of the world of work, which is therefore useful to guide him in a more informed choice of his own training and professional paths. The internship is an experience generally carried out outside the university; however, the option of an "internal" internship that takes place within schools and/or departments is also contemplated, with the aim of allowing the student a closer observation of the world of university research.

The internship can be carried out during the degree course starting from the 2nd semester of the 2nd year, subject to inclusion in the study plan, and allows the student to acquire 4 training credits, with a total of at least 100 hours of activity.

While not in any way constituting an employment relationship, the internship represents in fact a significant opportunity for knowledge and experience, useful for guiding the student to a more informed choice of their training and/or professional path.
Internships can be carried out both at affiliated locations and facilities outside the University and within the School and/or Departments.
- within the offer presented on the Career Service website, where a calendar of meetings with companies in the sector is also published;
- independently presenting a professional firm or a company with which he has already come into contact;
- within the offer structured directly by the CdL.
Through the SAT managers, the Degree Course periodically organizes meetings with professionals, experts and representatives of the world of work, in particular in the following sectors:
- project (architectural firms, architecture/engineering companies, professional associations, etc.);
- culture and heritage (museums, cultural institutions, urban centres, architectural magazines, etc.);
- production (firms and companies in the construction sector, trade associations, etc.)
- real estate sector (real estate development agencies and companies, service companies in the field of facility/property management, etc.);
- public administration (local authorities, ALER, ARPA, Superintendencies, etc.).
In this relational and exchange context, the Degree Course organizes a specific offer of external and internal internships, as well as seminar cycles and training initiatives whose attendance allows the acquisition of 4 credits related to the internship.
The student can therefore choose to carry out their internship in one of the following forms:
- External internship in Italy or abroad, self procured or offered by the University;
- Internal practical activity (internal internship) to be carried out at the University structures and offered by teachers of the School;
- Recognition of Prior Activity (reserved only for those who work, for a period of more than six months, with a regular employment contract consistent with the professional figure targeted by the Degree in Architectural Design and carried out at the same time as enrollment in the Polytechnic);
- Erasmus internship (Erasmus) with participation in the competition, managed by the Career Service.
- Participation in professional courses. The lists of activated courses, the period of development and the methods of recognition will be published on the School website.

14.12 Access to Study Programmes of Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science)

The Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in Urban Planning: City Environment Landscape allows to access the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science), Specializing Master of the first level and post-graduate training courses.

Students who graduate within 4 years of first enrollment and who by 30 September of the second calendar year from enrollment have acquired the required N/V parameter (cfu/ average, which can be found in your study plan).

Admission to the Management of Built Environment Master's Degree Course is permitted, subject to evaluation of previous career, without educational debts.

These are the required parameters, differentiated by year of access:

- Students enrolled from the 2010/11 academic year: N/V 104/27

Students who do not fulfil the required parameter will be selected as indicated in the Admission Regulations, which can be downloaded in the specific section of the School's website https://www.auic.polimi.it/it/trasferimenti-e-passaggi

Internal double master's degree programs are also active, joint programs developed between courses of study with the aim of integrating disciplinary skills, in order to respond to the needs of some specific sectors through a new professional figure.

– Master's Degree Course in "Management of Built Environment - Management of Buildings LM-24" and Master's Degree Course in "Urban Planning and Policy Design - Urban Planning and Territorial Policies LM-48"

14.12.1 Knowledge of the English language

From the a.y. 2006/2007, in order to be admitted to Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) Study Programme, the English language is a pre-requisite.
