2. General presentation of the study programmeThe aim of the Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) Programme in Architectural Design is to create a basic education on the architecture knowledge in its historical, formal, aesthetic, functional, constructive, technological and representative aspects. The architectural project is related to different areas and applications: the city, thelandscape, thebuilding, thebuiltenvironment, the interiors.
The Laurea Programme has the objective to create a professional skill able to deal appropriately with the growing complexity of the problems related to architectural design and to the new tasks and responsibilities required by the professional world. The graduate student, through a good and critical preparation together with defined technical skills, is able to carry out professional activities specified by law.
The sequence of courses and laboratories is aimed to pursue the objectives of the Laurea Programme.
Graduate students in Architectural Design will have the educational credits that constitute the prerequisite to access the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes with the aim to train architects and construction engineers/architects, in accordance with Directive 85/384/EEC.
Graduate students in Architectural Design will also have access to Specializing Masters of I level. The educational activities of the Laurea Programme take place in Milan, Piacenza and Mantova campuses.
In Milan and Piacenza campuses, there is a track completely given in English language.
3. Learning objectivesThe Laurea Programme in Architectural Design aims to train graduate students with the basic knowledge and operational tools needed to develop the architectural project at different levels, with careful attention to the conditions given by the complexity of the processes of transformation of the built environment.
The educational career provides an in-depth study of a wide range of scientific, humanistic and artistic disciplines, that can be considered as the knowledge and skills required today to the architect to properly face the challenges of the world of work, also at an international level. The studies related to the disciplines of the history of architecture and art, rendering and mathematics, sociology, urban planning, architectural composition, architectural technology, technical physics, statics and construction science, restoration, and economic evaluation are particularly important. All of them, at the same level, contribute to develop critical skills and the right knowledge of the techniques for design elaboration.
The experience of the project during the educational career has a central role and is based on a strong synergy between multidisciplinary laboratories and courses: laboratories provide the methodological and operational skills needed to create, represent and develop an architectural design with its constructive implications; the courses provide that set of knowledge needed and useful in the project experience. Laboratories and programmes are combined with seminars, conferences, workshops, exhibitions and study travel in which students will come into contact with the most important professional research environments both in Italy and abroad.
As completion of this career, the internship which is a fundamental moment of contact with the world of work and the professional activity, the business or public administration, depending on the inclination and attitude of the student.
At the end of the educational career, the graduate student in Architecture Design will know properly the basic rules of: the principles, methods and techniques of architectural and urban design; the history of architecture; tools and forms of representation, mathematics and basic sciences; principles of structures and systems calculation; aspects concerning the realization processes, technical and economic feasibility of the architecture works. The educational career includes, in its ending phase, thematic orientations related to issues and important scales to which the architecture design ratio is applied: the city, the construction and built heritage, to the interior space, the environment and landscape, the territory.
At the end of the educational career, the graduate student in Architectural Design can:
- suggest suitable and consistent solutions to the problem dealt, with cultural awareness and technical competence;
- show a critical skill on contexts in a spatial, social and economic level, related to the quantity and quality aspects;
- contextualize the project properly with respect to different scales of intervention, anticipating the impact that the proposed changes can cause on spatial and social systems and discussing the objectives and reasons of the project choices at different levels;
- communicate the results of the analysis and design activities, with appropriate tools, even innovative ones, for experts and non-expert counterparts, having acquired rhetorical and communication skills that allow him to discuss the reasons of his project choices in a clear and proper way.
Starting from the knowledge acquired, the graduate student will be able to autonomously broaden and update his knowledge and the technical skills acquired, with particular reference to the most innovative fields.
4. Organization of the study programme and further studies 4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications4.2 Further StudiesThe qualification grants access to "Laurea Magistrale" (2nd degree), "Corso di Specializzazione di primo livello" (1st level Specialization Course) and "Master Universitario di primo livello" (1st level University Master)
Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science)
The graduate student in Architectural Design can access the Laurea Magistrale Programme available at Politecnico di Milano or other Universities, in fields of particular interest, with regulated access by the structure providing the Study Programme. In particular, the graduate student in Architectural Design will have the educational credits that constitute the prerequisite to access the Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programmes in Architecture with the aim to train architects and construction engineers/architects, with a graduation recognized among the EU Member States in accordance with Directive 85/384/EEC. The Politecnico di Milano offers the following Laurea Magistrale programmes in Architecture aimed to train the architect and the building engineer-architect: Architettura, Ambiente Costruito, Interni/Architecture, Built Environment, Interiors; Architettura e Disegno Urbano/Architecture and Urban Design; Architettura delle Costruzioni/Construction Architecture; Architectural Design and History; Sustainable architecture and landscape design. At Politecnico di Milano, the graduate student in Architectural Design can also access without any curricular integration to Laurea Magistrale programmes in Architectural Engineering in Management of Built Environment, in Landscape Architecture. Land Landscape Heritage and in Urban Planning and Policy Design, in Ingegneria Edile per la Sostenibilità.

The graduate student in Architectural Design can access the Specializing Master of 1st level available at Politecnico di Milano or other Universities, in fields of particular interest, with regulated access by the structure providing the Master.

The graduate student in Architecture design can access the Post-graduate Training Courses available at Politecnico di Milano or other Universities, in fields of particular interest, with regulated access by the structure providing the course.
5. Professional opportunities and work market5.1 Professional status of the degreeGraduates in Architectural Design are qualified to work in private and public bodies, professional studios and design firms in the following activities: working on design activities and managing building work including public work; direct and instrumental surveying; design and management of work relating to simple building and maintenance work and renovation of buildings. After passing State Exams, graduates in Architectural Design can register on the following professional registers: architects, town planners, landscape designers and conservationists, Section B, Architecture Sector, with the title of Junior Architect.

The specific skills are related to design activities in different areas and with different scales of application.
The job opportunities for the activities of the graduate student are institutions and public and private bodies in the field of construction and transformation of city and territory; institutional bodies, public and private companies, professional firms, design companies.
The graduate student in Architectural Design is a professional profile able to work effectively to the development of architectural projects at different scales, from definition of the project objectives to verification of technical feasibility of the solutions. In a multidisciplinary design team, this profile can deal with definition and analysis of problems, extensively and completely, which provide many environmental transformation actions of the built environment according to different scales of settlement contexts and comparing consciously with the complex framework of resources and restrictions that determine the design process.
In particular, skills of this function are:
- set up design processes through a critical ability on spatial, social and economic aspects of the intervention contexts;
- ability to prepare, through techniques and proper tools, specific context analysis, such as: description and survey of physical environment and buildings, analysis of needs and opportunities, setting of a limitation framework (technical, regulatory, environmental aspects), necessary for preparation of the project;
- research skills and critical analysis of formal, technical, functional options to solve specific design problems at different scales;
- ability to communicate effectively through the use of appropriate tools, analysis and project proposals to parties with different levels of proficiency and specialization;
- ability to explain and communicate clearly and properly their choices about the design process.

5.3 Qualification profileJunior architect
Profile in a work context
The graduate student in Architectural Design, after having passed the State Professional Examination, can be registered in the Professional Registry of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Curators, in Section B, architecture section, with the title of Junior architect.

6. Enrolment6.1 Access requirementsItalian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)
In order to be admitted to the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design, it is required to pass and be included in the national ranking list of the Admission test for single cycle Laurea and Laurea Magistrale Programmes, directly for the purpose of Architect's training.

If the requirements are not satisfied, specific additional educational obligations (OFA) are assigned to the student and some limitation in the prosecution of his study career are applied.

7. Contents of the study Program7.1 Programme requirements
Students graduate on completion of 180 ECTS. ECTS correspond to 25 hours of work overall. The 180 ECTS encompassed by this Laurea Programme in Architectural Design respect the legal minimums set out for educational activities in L-17 Laurea class Architectural Sciences (law 270/2004) specifically: 44 ECTS for base educational activities (maths for architecture, physical-technical subjects and technology for architecture, history for architecture, architectural and environmental representation subjects); 64 ECTS for professional activities (architectural and urban planning, theories and techniques for architectural renovation, structural analysis and planning for architecture, urban and territorial planning, technological subjects for architecture and building, surveying in architecture and urban planning); 18 ECTS for linked or additional activities. 8 ECTS are also awarded for work experience and the final exam and at least 12 ECTS for activities chosen by students.
According to Law No. 33 of April 12, 2022, simultaneous enrollment in two programs is allowed. Enrollment in two programs is possible only if they are of different degree classes (classi di laurea) and differ in at least two-thirds of their educational activities regarding academic credits.
Consistent with what is defined by Law No. 33, at the student's instance, the maximum number of CFUs already taken in the other program and validatable is 60 CFUs for BSc programmes.
Please note that courses belonging to programs of a different level or type from the program you are enrolled in cannot be validated.
Full details on when to apply for validation and the administrative fees to be paid are available on the Polimi website: https://www.polimi.it/contemporanea-iscrizione 7.2 Mode of studyThe course is full time and includes courses made up of lessons and practice, obligatory laboratories, seminars and visits.
The different teaching typologies provided with the aim to give the necessary cultural and professional training are organized with lectures, exercises, laboratory activities, seminars, study visits and training activities. In some cases the activities are carried out using innovative teaching methods.
The optional couerses can be chosen among a wide and articulated offer, enriched with the optional courses activated in other study programmes of the School. 7.3 Detailed learning objectivesLaurea Programme in Architectural Design provides only one study plan with prior approval for the tracks activated in Milan, Mantova and Piacenza. The objectives and the contents of the teaching activities provided in the track given in English in Milan and Piacenza are aligned with this study plan.
Each course and each laboratory has a number of credits as shown in the degree programme of the Laurea Programme.
The courses have a semestral lenght and can provide procedures of in-course evaluations and the activity ends with a final exam.
The laboratories have a semestral or an annual lenght, and the activities are coordinated by professors responsible for the integrated modules in the Laboratory. The attendance to the activities of the Laboratories is mandatory for the 70% of the presence in classroom. Attendance is verified by the professors, based on criteria according to training organization. Laboratory activities end with an examination carried out by the commission made by all responsible professors of the integrated modules.

LABORA laboratory
A modeling laboratory (LABORA) is activated. The rules of use of the new LABORA laboratory will regulate a wide range of equipment for analog and digital processing, in addition to the equipment for virtual reality processing. Please, verify the mode of attending on LABORA Regulations.
Saperlab Laboratory
The Saperlab Lab is an educational and research structure that meets the needs of students and professors about being updated and development of techniques, materials and building systems for architecture. A place where digital, physical and paper information about architectural techniques is collected and organized, and experiments on new constructive systems take place. The laboratory performs its activity within a multidisciplinary point of view of the project and construction. Its activities are focused on innovative processes in relation to settlement issues, to the topic of urban and building requalification issues, sustainability of transformation processes, advanced technologies and materials.
Central Architecture Library
The central architecture library is part of the University Library Services. www.biblio.polimi.it/en/
The library has about 60.000 Italian and foreign scientific works, mainly dedicated to architecture, art, urban planning, design, interior design, landscape, restoration and museum studies. A special section is dedicated to the works of the city of Milan. All texts used and recommended in the study programme courses of the Schools of Architecture and Design are available. In the reference sector, you can consult the main thematic and general encyclopedias, yearbooks and codes in the field of urban planning and building. About 1000 magazines are also available, including 400 currently with subscription. The main periodicals are available on CD ROM, related to art and architecture, and a wide range of publications focused on the same themes.

The documentary heritage of the Library currently includes over 12000 single¿subject volumes on history of architecture, urban planning, landscape, science and technology, engineering and restoration, and it is possible to find also the texts suggested in the course bibliographies. A rather large section is dedicated to the Mantova territory. Many single¿subject volumes are in foreign language. Book heritage is also constantly enriched thanks to student and professor suggestions, and the acquisition of the most interesting and recent publications in the architecture field. There are also, available for consultation, 50 magazines on open shelves in the consultation room, room 1 and room 3, and more than 1700 graduation work in Architecture, Architecture Science and Architecture and Building Construction. Laboratory on technical and practical experimentation about innovative techniques for modeling three-dimensional prototypes e maquette at different design scales.

The library has the texts used and suggested in programme bibliographies of courses related to the study programmes activated in this campus. The current documentary heritage, still in expansion, includes more than 5000 volumes, with Italian and foreign scientific works on engineering, mathematics, chemistry, economics, transport, logistics, energy systems. Furthermore, it is possible to consult, via computer terminals, the electronic journals of Politecnico and on-line databases. The library spaces are four interconnected rooms for consultation, reading and study. The consultation room has 4 seats. It must be used for individual consultation and is provided of 4 personal computers to access the Online Catalog (OPAC). International contextThe presence of tracks in English language, held in Milan and Piacenza, and the many visiting professors coming from different countries, holding different professional and academic backgrounds, allow students to be part of an international context, even while being in their own country.
12. InternationalizationInternational Mobility
The Politecnico di Milano offers the students various opportunities to spend periods studying abroad. The credits (ECTS) acquired, subject to the approval of a Learning Agreement, are recognized as an integral part of the curriculum.
International mobility may be for study (a) or a Double Degree (b):
a) period of study at partner universities in EU countries (Erasmus) and non-EU countries (bilateral agreements);
b) Double Degree projects with EU and non-EU universities.
Aside from these opportunities, international mobility periods of variable lengths and natures are also possible, within international networks which the Politecnico is part of (Alliance4Tech, Athens, Idea League, UniTech).
The mobility for study generally lasts one term. It is potentially extendable, if allowed by the agreement with the partner university, for a further term, subject to authorization from the School Bodies (the Politecnico Teachers who promote the mobility for the partner university).
International mobility: polimi
During the mobility for study, it is possible to acquire credits (ECTS) and/or carry out part of the thesis at the partner university. This opportunity for some universities is specified in the call and is coordinated by the proposing professor; where it is not specified, students may nominate a co-supervisor in the partner university, as long as the objectives and content are agreed with the supervisor, who must be a professor of the Politecnico di Milano. The final discussion of the thesis must take place at the Politecnico di Milano.
Students who take part in the Double Degree programme will obtain the Degree title from the Politecnico di Milano as well as from the partner university, after having acquired a total of 150 or 180 ECTS credits - according to the agreement - across the two universities. Following the discussion of the thesis - in the ways agreed with the partner university - students will be awarded with two degree with two separate marks.
The exams sat abroad are validated in the ways posted on the AUIC School’s website which involve a weighted score conversion tool.
Students who have carried out a period of international mobility for study abroad during their Laurea (Bachelor of Science) can apply again during their Laurea Magistrale (Master of Science).

International mobility is supported by both the Politecnico and the European Union with the payment of a scholarship, the amount of which varies from year to year.
In order to be able to participate in international mobility programmes, either for study or for Double Degrees, students must submit their applications via the call for International Mobility, posted periodically on the Politecnico website and on the AUIC School’s website
Students selected for mobility cannot carry out the exchange during the first term of their first year of their Master Programme.
The selected students must agree with the Professor of Politecnico, Promoter of the partnered university where they have been assigned, a Learning Agreement, i.e. a Study Plan equivalent to the teachings at the foreign university.
The Politecnico does not require a minimum number of ECTS credits, though this may depend on the partner university or on administrative restrictions to obtain a visa that may be necessary for non-EU countries.
When returning from the mobility for study, a maximum of 62 credits of teachings obtained abroad can be validated.
For students with previous career, the total sum of the credits from previous career and from international mobilitry cannot overcome the number of 112 credits.
For students who have not been selected for international mobility but who nonetheless wish to work on their thesis abroad, financial support is available thanks to the “Tesi all’estero” scholarship posted on the Politecnico di Milano website and the AUIC School’s website

“FREE MOVER" mobility
Students who carry out an international mobility by organizing their own study period abroad are defined as "free movers".

1. Admission to the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design
1.1 Admission requirements
To be admitted to the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design, the requirement is the High school diploma or equivalent foreign qualification, recognized as suitable.
In order to be admitted to the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design, it is required to pass and be included in the national ranking list of the Admission test for single cycle laurea and Laurea Magistrale Programmes, directly for the purpose of Architect's training, that for the a.y. 2020-2021 will takes place on 3 September 2020.

After publication of the admission ranking lists, students can enroll to the Laurea Programme.
It is required to pass and be included in the ranking list of the admission test also to students from study programmes of Laurea Category L-17 Architectural Sciences (of Politecnico di Milano or other University), regardless of the number of University Educational Credits acquired in his/her study programme, or possession of another Degree.
It is also required the repetition of the admission test for students previously enrolled in other Study Programmes, lost or that made renunciation to study.
1.1.1 Limitations related to the presence of English OFA (additional educational obligations)
Students with OFA in English, at the submission of the study plan for subsequent years following the first one, will be able to insert only courses and laboratories necessary to complete the educational offer of the first year.
In order to be able to include in the study plan the educational offer related to the second year, the OFA must be fulfilled within the deadline set by the university for submission of the Study Plan. Students that complete the OFA after that date, and in any case before the deadline set by the university for the half-year change of the Study Plan, will be able to include in the Study Plan only the teachings of the second semester.
1.2 Transfers and changes
Requests for transfer of course (students already enrolled in other courses at the Politecnico di Milano and for students not yet lapsed from disabled study courses) or transfer (students from other universities) with previous career evaluation must be submitted according to the methods and terms set by the University

In compliance with the ministerial programming of access to study courses aimed at training the architect's professional profile, the number of students admitted to enrollment on the 2nd and 3rd year following passage or transfer is limited to 10% of the number of students matriculations for the reference cohort.
Applicants will be admitted to enrollment until all available places have been filled, following the order of presentation and completion of the request for passage or transfer.
2. ECTS credits
2.1 Acquiring ECTS credits
The University Educational Credit (ECTS) represents the amount of learning work, including individual study, which is required to a student with proper skills, to acquire the knowledge and skills that characterize the Laurea Programme.
In the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design, 1 ECTS corresponds to 25 hours of work.
The average quantity of learning work, carried out in one year by a student involved in full-time university studies, is conventionally fixed at 60 ECTS.
The ECTS related to each educational activity are acquired by the student with an exam passed.
The time that must be dedicated to personal study or other individual learning activities cannot be less than 50% of the overall workload.
2.1 Registration ETCS credits
Each year students can choose courses an laboratories for a different number of ECTS than that specified by the Degree Programme according to their needs and their study programmes.
The contribution will be related to the number of credits inserted in the Study Plan.
The minimum number of ECTS a student can enroll on is 30 unless the number of credits needed for the programme completion are fewer than this.
The maximum number of ECTS a student can enroll on is 80, respecting exam priorities.
The credit registration must comply with the sequence among teachings provided by the Degree Programme and the priority rules.
All the activities of the Study Plan (including internship and final exam) are also counted and calculated for the purposes of contribution.
3. Study Plan
3.1. Submission of the Study Plan
The student is required, under its own responsibility, to submit the individual study plan. The Study Plan is taken by the school as supporting document for all purposes. Its completion also certifies the conformity of the choices made by the student with the rules specified by law and provisions of the Regulations.
Students are not allowed to attend laboratories or courses that are not included in the Study Plan. In any case, it is not possible to recognize or validate assessments related to activities not included in the Study Plan or attended differently from what indicated after the allocation in sections.
The study plan submission is definitive and it must be completed on time and in the ways established in the Academic Calendar.
First year
The new enrolled students will have automatically a Study Plan and will be registered in all courses of the I year.
Second year
Students enrolled in the second year will have to submit the Study Plan by the dates provided in the Academic Calendar. Students that do not fulfill this duty will have to submit the Study Plan by request through online services; they will be enrolled in the studios with allocation upon availability.
Third year
Students enrolled in the third year will have to submit the Study Plan by the dates provided in the Academic Calendar. Students that do not fulfill this duty will have to submit the Study Plan by request through online services; they will be enrolled in the studios with allocation upon availability.
3.1.1 Change of the Study Plan
Before the start of the second semester, in a period indicated in the academic calendar, you will be given the opportunity to change your study plan. It will only be possible to intervene on the courses offered in the second semester and with the availability of free credits (excluding courses and laboratories with merit-based allocation) with the following opportunities:
. change second semester elective courses; . add second semester courses excluding laboratories and merit-based teaching; . eliminate second semester courses excluding laboratories and merit-based courses; . pass non-compulsory first semester courses included in the study plan in September:
3.1.2 Additional payment
Through resolution of the Board of Governors, the allocation of additional payment of 100,00 Euro is provided for failure in submitting the Study Plan within the deadlines provided in the Academic Calendar. The payment will be required with the second instalment.
3.1.3 “Free” Credits
The exams relating to the courses of the 2nd semester and annual courses of the previous academic year regularly attended, reinserted into the plan and passed in the February session as the last exam of the previous academic year, will "free up" credits which can be included in the plan in the semester change .
The six-monthly change does not allow the inclusion of laboratories and courses with meritocratic allocation. Therefore, students who believe they can free up credits following the taking of exams in the January-February session are advised to include the laboratories and courses with merit-based allocation when presenting the plan in September, postponing the inclusion of the courses that cannot be included due to reaching the maximum credit threshold.
3.2 Priorities, Limitations for the Study Plan
Students enrolled must comply with the sequence of courses provided by the Degree Programme.
In addition to what provided on degree programmes about course progression, the following types of priorities can be applied, under approval of the Academic Senate:

It defines a restriction that must be respected in the selection of courses when presenting the Study Plan. It is not possible to include in the Study Plan the course b if the course a has not been included (even if not passed). It does not affect the exam registration.

It defines a restriction that must be met at the time of composition of the Study Plan and during the 'positive' exam registration (passed exam). It is not possible to register the exam b if the exam a has not been registered.

For the laurea Programme in Architectural Design, the following suggestions are provided:
- Priority suggested:
the disposition of courses in the Laurea Programme is designed to allow the student to progressively acquire skills and competences. Following this sequence is the condition to get the best preparation, so we strongly recommend to attend the Laboratories after having followed the courses that come before them and provide the basic knowledge to correctly carry out these activities. In particular it is suggested, except the compulsory priorities about the exam registration shown below, to take all the exams of the first year and of the first semester of the second year before beginning to attend the Courses and Laboratories of the third year.
- Priority of the Study Plan composition:
it is possible to add in the Study Plan the Architectural Design Studio 2 only if in the Study Plan is already available and approved the Architectural Design Studio and after approval of attendance.
It is possible to add in the Study Plan the Architectural Design Studio 3 and the Final Design Workshop if in the study plan is already available and approved the Architectural Design Studio 2.
- priority of exam registration:
- the exam related to the course in Statics (2° year, 1 sem.) must be compulsorily registered before the course of Mechanics of materials and structures (3° year, 1 sem.). In formulation of the study plan, students can include simultaneously, upon condition, the courses of Statics and Mechanics of materials and structures, but their registration must comply with the above-mentioned sequence.
The registration of the exams of Architectural Design studio 1 must come before the registration of the exam of Architectural Design studio 2; this last one must come before the registration of Architectural Design studio 3 and the Final design workshop.
3.3 Courses as extra
Students can add in their study plan some courses as extra (for a maximum number of 32 ECTS credits) among those shown in the three-year educational offer of the Schools. These courses must be considered as something more to the compulsory ones that make the 60 ECTS credits of each year of the programme.
The inclusion of courses as extra is subject to compliance with the sequence obligations and the sum of the actual maximum credits, for each annual registration, however, is set at 80 ECTS credits.
The addition of courses given in Laurea Magistrale Programmes of the category (LM-4) as extra courses in the contesxt of the Laurea Programme in Architectural Design shall be regulated as follows:
No more than 32 credits can be validated between supernumerary courses and single courses for the purposes of the Master's Degree
Moreover, the students who have attained 30 ECTS credits of courses as extra shall not be eligible to attain further credits as extra courses after obtaining their degree
We wish to emphasize that as for individual courses, the acquisition of credits through courses as extra is not a preferential qualification for access to Lauree Magistrale Programmes (equivalent to Master of Science).
These courses will not be included in the calculation of credits and will not be counted in the average for the purposes of admission to the final exam and graduation.
3.4 Allocation in Courses and Studios
The allocation of students to different sections of the courses of the first, second and third year and of the Studios of the first year takes place by alphabetical balanced distribution, defined by the offices; allocations, once established, cannot be changed.
Student allocation in sections of the Studios of the second and third year is defined on the basis of merit criteria in order to ensure a distribution of students that streamlines the educational activity.
The student will have to express a number of options equal to the number of available sections.
The placement of students in the studio sections will be based on their position in the ranking list and according to the order of the options expressed.
The student who does not express the options on time, he/she will be placed in the section with less participant students.
The options expressed by students will be ordered with the following criteria: Order by decreasing values of the parameter G calculates as shown below:

Cum laude will be calculated as equal to 33/30. The parameter G will be calculated on the career acquired within the summer session.
3.5 Attendance to courses and laboratories
Attendance obligations will be indicated by the Laurea Programmes in line with directives of the School. Such obligations will be communicated to the students by the professors responsible of the courses at the beginning of the programmes. Consistency of attendance rules is guaranteed for all sections of the same course.
Attendance verification is up to the professor responsible of the course based on criteria in line with educational organization and methods to certify the attendance will be communicated to students at the beginning of the programme.
The attendance at the studios is compulsory and will be met if it is indicatively at least 70% of the total number of hours.
The attendance will expire for the students who do not pass the exam in the last session of the a.y.
4. Exam session
4.1. 3.6 Registration to exams and exam sessions
Students can sit exam sessions only if they enrolled at least 5 days before the date planned for the exam.
Once the 5 days are over, students can still register to the exam until the day the exam will take place, but the registration can be confirmed only if the professor accepts it.
The failure in enrolment involves the absolute impossibility to take the exam and register it in the career.
For each course (Courses and Studios) there are three exam sessions that will be held on:
- January/February, June/July, August/September for courses and half-year studios of the 1st semester;
- June/July, August/September, January/February for courses and half-year studios of the 2nd semester;
- in June/July, August/September, January/February for annual studios.
4.2 Score evaluation
It is guaranteed, through appropriate forms of coordination, the homogeneity of checking procedures of learning among all sections of the same course, in line with the directives of the Laurea Programme.
The main related directives are the following:
- professors can plan in-course tests. They can be seen as an evaluation or as a contribution to the final evaluation. Such evaluations will be made known on the Web site and communicated to the students by the professors responsible of the courses at the beginning of the activities;
- the in-course tests of studios, which require compulsory attendance, will be considered as additional contribution to the final evaluation and will consist of an evaluation of the progress in project activity.
Students, who have not obtained the attendance, will not be admitted to the exam sessions and must attend again the Studio.
Based on the evaluation tests, the exams of the students can be:
- passed, with assignment of a score;
- postponed, to a later evaluation;
- to sit again, if they have not fulfilled the obligations of the course or passed the exam within the third exam session; the course attendance is not valid and the student must attend again the course.
The exam registration can be done via web, and it is specified that:
- the student has the right to see his marked examination scripts, within the time and in the ways established and properly advertised by the professor;
- through the registration via web, the student will receive via email (on the university email assigned during enrollment) the notification of score publication. The student has the opportunity, before registration, to not accept the positive score, through a communication via email to the professor of his/her decision, and then get a postponement to the following exam sessions;
- the score renunciation must be clear and must be made on time and in the ways stated and communicated by the professor in the score notification via email;
- without a clear score renunciation, the professor registers the score assigned to the student.
4.3 Self-certification of passed exam
In case that, when submitting the Study Plan, an exam already taken (of which therefore the score is known) is not yet registered in career, the student can self-certify the exam.
In order to consider the exam taken as valid, it is necessary that the student is officially enrolled in the course or studio and to the related exam session.
It is not allowed to self-certify a course of which the exam has not yet been sat when completing the Study Plan.
An improper self-certification has the effect of prohibiting registration to the exam sessions of self-certified course, and it implies the cancellation of the course or studio from the Study Plan and the impossibility to put it back until the next a.y.
5. Other educational activities

In order to guarantee and preserve the quality of teaching, a maximum number of eligible participants is set as reported on the Degree Programme.
5.1 Workshop
The workshop activities are of two types:
• Workshops that can be accredited as an activity of your choice, or as an activity that can be credited in excess;
• “Trainees Workshop”, which can be accredited as an internship activity.
In relation to graduation sessions, workshops completed at least one month before the graduation session chosen by the student will be credible for career purposes.
It will not be possible to accredit a workshop held during the three-year degree course within the Master's Degree, or, if the workshop was carried out as a supernumerary activity during the Three-year Degree, request its recognition in the new Master's career.
The recognition of training credits deriving from participation in workshops can only take place if the workshop is authorized in advance by the School Board, following a motivated proposal accompanied by a program by a teacher (from the School or Politecnico di Milano) who coordinates its activity.
The list of workshops accredited by the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering is available in the dedicated section of the School website and is updated several times during the year:

To participate in the workshops it will be necessary to follow the procedures specified in the individual sheets and refer to the contact teachers indicated by the teacher in charge.
Students who have attended or intend to attend a workshop, for the purpose of validation in the study plan, must comply with the following procedures:
- students enrolled starting from the 2016/17 academic year, in compiling the study plan they must have compulsorily entered the workshop line.
- students enrolled in academic years prior to 2016/17, in compiling the study plan they may have entered the workshop line or alternatively an elective course. The student can replace the elective course with the attendance of a workshop; in this case, the modification of the plan line will be carried out by the competent offices when verbalizing the credits.
Validation must be requested at least one month before the graduation date, following the procedure indicated in the WORKSHOP section of the School website.
The recognition of a maximum number of 4 credits deriving from participation in workshops is foreseen.
5.2 Internship
The internship can be carried out during the degree course starting from the 2nd semester of the 2nd year, subject to inclusion in the study plan, and allows the student to acquire 4 training credits, with a total of at least 100 hours of activity.
The internship is an experience that allows the student to acquire a first direct knowledge of the world of work, so useful to direct him in a more informed choice of his educational and professional careers. The internship experience is generally carried out not in the same University; however, it is also provided the option of "internal" internship, that takes place in the schools and/or Departments, with the aim to allow the student to have a closer observation of the world of university research.
Although it is not, in any case, an employment relationship, the internship represents an important opportunity of knowledge and experience, useful to guide the student in a more informed choice of his education and/or professional career.
It is possible to carry out the internship in the campuses and structures with an agreement with the university, and in the school and/or Departments.
- in the offer presented on the Career Service web site, where it also published a calendar of meetings with companies of the industry;
- by autonomous presentation of a professional firm or company with which you already have contact;
- within the offer directly from the Laurea Programme.
The Laurea Programme, through the SAT responsible persons, organizes regular opportunities to meet professionals, experts and representatives of the world of work, particularly in the following areas:
- project (architecture firms, architecture/engineering companies, professional associations, etc.);
- culture and heritage (museums, cultural institutions, urban centre, architectural magazines, etc.);
- production (enterprises and companies in the construction sector, associations of the industry, etc.)
- real estate sector (agencies and real estate development companies, service companies in the field of facility/property management, etc.);
- public administration (local authorities, ALER, ARPA, Superintendence, etc.).
In this relational and exchange context, the Laurea Programme organizes a specific range of external and internal internships, as well as seminars and training initiatives whose attendance allows the acquisition of 4 ECTS related to internship.
The student can then choose to carry out the internship in one of the following ways:
External internship in Italy or abroad, found autonomously or offered by the University;
Internal Practice activity (Internal internship) to be carried out in the University structures and offered by the School professors;
Recognized Previous Activity (reserved only to those that work, for a period longer than six months, with a regular contract in a work field similar to the professional profile of the study programme in Architecture design and carried out at the same time of the enrolment at Politecnico);
- Erasmus Internship (Erasmus) through participation to the call, managed by the Career Service.
- Participation in professional courses or workshops recognized as internship. On the web site of the School, the list of courses activated, the period and the recognition methods will be published.
6. Pre-requisite for admission to Laurea Magistrale Programmes (equivalent to Master of Science)
For the admission to the Laurea Magistrale Programmes activated at Politecnico di Milano, a higher level of knowledge of the English language is required as a pre-requisite, if compared to that required for admission to the Laurea Programme in Architectural design. The list of recognized certifications is available on the University website.
