2. General presentation of the study programme

The modern society needs clean and efficient technologies for the transformation of energy and it needs high performance materials for several applications including automotive, biomedical, electronic, environmental, aerospace, etc. We also require efficient methods for the production of food and we expect to live in a clean environment, characterized by a sustainable use of the natural resources. Whatever the solutions for these needs, they involve – in a way or in another - chemical transformations. Therefore the modern society needs Chemical Engineering, whose principles are at the basis of all transformation processes of matter and energy.

A chemical engineer is able to provide cutting edge solutions to meet the needs of society. Using his knowledge about chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering he is able to describe the chemical and physical transformations, and to design processes from the molecular to the industrial scale.

The Chemical Engineering programme at Politecnico di Milano, structured on the Bachelor and the Master degrees, is not only focused on the chemical industry, but it is characterized by its wide-angle approach. In fact Chemical Engineering is involved in all manufacturing and processing technologies, and in the environmental protection as well. For this reason Chemical Engineering differs from other engineering degree programmes being Process Engineering in a broad sense, centered on the chemico-physical transformations of the materials. As examples of applications of Chemical Engineering, we can recall the production of fuels from biomasses; the development of technologies for the removal/reutilization of carbon dioxide; the production of a chemical product from different reactants; the production of a component made of plastic material (from reactants to the polymer and then to the final product); the production of an electronic device; the treatment of a waste to reduce its pollution loading; the design of environmentally sustainable processes and many others.

The scale of these applications may range from the laboratory and the pilot plant to the large industrial production plants.

Therefore chemical engineers do not work only in chemical and petrochemical plants, but in all companies involving transformation processes such as in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, environmental or energy sector. Chemical engineers also deal with issues related to environmental aspects and the sustainability of production, including effluent treatment technologies to reduce the concentration of pollutants.

In other words, chemical engineer is a chemistry technologist, working in the transformation processes on all production scales, as opposed to the chemist or industrial chemist, who operate on smaller laboratory scales and in the field of chemical analysis methods.

3. Learning objectives

The programme in Chemical Engineering aims at forming experts who can meet the technological challenges of modern society through their unique approach to work. In particulars, the Chemical Engineer will be able to summarize every complex system through a sequence of simpler operations for which an independent solution can be found. The chemical engineer must learn how to conduct a preliminary analysis of a process where first the desired characteristics of the final products are defined, the starting materials for the industrial production are chosen, the sequence of steps necessary for the process are established and operating conditions of each steps are investigated. At this point the Chemical Engineer is involved in the design phase of all the equipments involved in the process previously determined. After designing the process and the units, the activities involving the management and the control of the plants are also designed.

The Chemical Engineer training is accomplished through a solid preparation in basic subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry), the study of traditional engineering disciplines (electrical and mechanical engineering, building science, heat engines) and, of course, in the deepening of chemical engineering subjects (principles of chemical engineering, unit operations of chemical plants, industrial chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, etc.). The result is an extremely flexible, professional cross-marked profile characterized by a strong knowledge in scientific subjects and application technology. The Chemical Engineering programme aims at shaping professional figures flexible and transversal characterized by a strong basic scientific, fundamental but also technical background.

The programme adopts the teaching methods that satisfy the Dublin Descriptors adopted on a European level. Comprehension and the ability to make independent judgements will be assessed through written and oral examinations and individual and/or group papers. The ability to apply knowledge and understanding will be tested through the student preparation of reports on student participation in laboratory activities and projects included in the curriculum. Communication abilities are checked through periodic presentations of the performed work. Learning ability will be checked during the individual activities designed in preparation of the final examination.

At the end of the study cycle, graduates will be able to choose the best material for a particular component and decide how to produce it at the best, taking into consideration the way in which the transformations and the processing affect the structure and therefore the properties of the final product. They will use methodological and technical instruments to face problems regarding: the development of traditional and innovative chemical processes, the production and transformation of materials, the choice of materials and the management of the components under normal or aggressive working conditions, the residual life of products.

4. Organization of the study programme and further studies

4.1 Structure of the study programme and Qualifications

The general structure of the Laurea in Chemical Engineering programme and the qualifications available are shown in the following figure:

- technical sectors of local government agencies and environment and safety consultancy companies.

In these fields, the chemical engineer will be able to use his different competences, helping in developing new processes and/or products, new chemical plants, unit operations, and/or equipments and reactors, in managing production and service plants, in managing maintenance of plants and equipments. Chemical engineers may, as well, find positions in the Research & Developments sector, even if this position may be more suitable for students who graduated in Laurea Magistrale (MSc) in Chemical Engineering.

In numerical terms, almost all the graduates in Chemical Engineering will continue the study by enrolling the course in Laurea Magistrale in Chemical Engineering. Today the market demand for Chemical Engineers is high. For this reason, many companies organise presentation and workshop days to meet undergraduates and choose candidates before they graduate. Meetings are periodically scheduled with companies such as DSM, ENI, TOPSOE, WOOD GROUP, SOLVAY-SOLEXIS, etc.

5.3 Qualification profile

The graduate in Chemical Engineering is a professional figure able to face the technological challenges of modern society through his particular method of work, extremely flexible and transversal, characterized by a strong basic scientific and technical-applicative preparation. The figure of the graduate in Chemical Engineering has been studied to meet the needs of the industrial sectors of reference, such as the chemical, energy and engineering companies, with which monitoring is always ongoing both on the quality of the training provided and on the contents of the disciplines taught.

Thanks to its cross-training, the chemical engineer will find employment in many industrial sectors (chemical, pharmaceutical, food, production and energy management, transformation and process industries, engineering companies that design, develop and implement processes and plants, research centers and industrial laboratories, technical structures of the public administration and environmental and safety consulting offices).

During the course of his studies he will have acquired methodological and technical tools to deal with problems concerning: the management of transformation processes; the definition of the process quantification and the design of the equipment; the choice of materials and the management of components in normal or aggressive working conditions; the residual life of the products.

6. Enrolment

6.1 Access requirements

Italian secondary school leaving qualification or other comparable foreign qualification (level 4 EQF)

According to Article 6 of the Ministerial Decree 270/04, admission to any Bachelor of Science Programme is subject to the possession of a four or five-year high school diploma or other qualification obtained abroad and recognized as equivalent.

Admission to the Chemical Engineering Bachelor of Science programme is subject to passing the entrance test prepared for the Engineering Schools.

Any student not fulfilling the above-listed knowledge requirements is required to complete supplementary education as indicated (OFA), which must be satisfied before attending courses offered after the first year.

6.2 Requested knowledge

To optimize the use of available resources across different locations, the total number of places for first-year enrollment in each degree program at the University is set by the Academic Senate during the definition of the educational offer, based on the indications provided by the relevant School.

Enrollment in the first year of the Chemical Engineering Bachelor of Science (Laurea) Programme is conditional upon passing a test aimed at verifying the possession of the knowledge required for admission and the aptitude for study. The verification of the possession of the required knowledge for admission is carried out through a common test for all Engineering courses activated by the University (TOL – Test Online).

The TOL can be taken by students in the penultimate and final year of high school, and by graduates.

The Engineering test has a minimum threshold. Even if there are available places, students who do not achieve a score of 30.00/100 or higher cannot enroll.

The ranking position of the candidates is established based on the score, available places for each test session, and the order of preferences expressed.

There are two phases of enrollment. The first phase of early enrollment is reserved for students who have passed the TOL in their penultimate year of high school with a score of 75.00/100 or higher.

The second phase of standard enrollment is reserved for students who passed the TOL in their penultimate year of high school with a score lower than 75.00/100, students who passed the TOL in their last year of high school, graduates, or students who passed the TOL in the penultimate year of high school but did not enroll in the first enrollment window.

Those who have achieved the minimum score set annually by the University in one of the following internationally recognized tests: SAT, GRE, GMAT, and TOLC-I (CISIA Test), may be exempted from the admission test.

The test is conducted remotely, using the candidate's personal computer and smartphone/tablet, with a connection in a Zoom Room supervised by a responsible person.

All details about the admission procedures, including the updated dates of the sessions scheduled for the TOL, are available on the University's website at: https://www.polimi.it/en/futuri-studenti/admission-to-laurea-programmes/engineering

7. Contents of the study Program

7.1 Programme requirements

As required by the law, to obtain the Laurea Degree (Bachelor of Science) in Chemical Engineering the student must gain 180 credits.
These include the study of the basic disciplines (mathematics and statistics, physics, chemistry), of chemical engineering (transport phenomena, thermodynamics, chemical technology, chemical reaction engineering, unit operations, process control, etc), of energy engineering (engines, pumps and turbines, systems for environment and energy), of materials engineering (materials science and technology), of building science, of integrative disciplines (e.g. organic chemistry, technical physics and electric engineering), and some credits to be freely selected by the student.
In the Chemical Engineering course the first 4 semesters (2 academic years) allow the student to acquire all the basics for the basic disciplines and industrial engineering. The third year is then devoted to the deepening of the chemical engineering topics, and to the introduction of the more specialized topics that the student can freely select.

In the presentation of the study plan, as to the free courses, a particularly motivated student can also enter the teachings of the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. The CCS may approve also proposals outside the Programme in Chemical Engineering if motivated by the student (the autonomous plan of studies).
In the third year, a practical activity (Laboratorio Progettuale), developed in the context of typical disciplines of Chemical Engineering, is also present and associated with the Final Exam (Prova Finale). Students will be guided in carrying out multidisciplinary practical work during which they will have to develop a project that analyzes, presents, and discusses a typical problem of chemical engineering, exploiting the skills in thematic areas acquired in the course of their studies. The course offers the students a further opportunity to deepen and verify their ability to analyze, process, and communicate their work.

The evaluation of the activities will be carried out on an ongoing basis and distributed throughout the semester, in parallel with the activities required by the course. The class attendance is therefore essential for the achievement of the educational objectives of the course and its evaluation.

Admission to Laboratorio Progettuale di Ingegneria Chimica + Prova Finale is granted only and exclusively to students who have recorded at least 100 ECTS and the marks of the pre-requisite courses of the Laboratorio Progettuale by the closing date of the presentation window of the study plans for the desired semester.
